NFL | Proposals for New Rules to Boost Defense - from www.KFFL.com

Sun, 20 Mar 2005 09:20:51 -0800

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson is sponsoring a set of proposals at this week's NFL meetings in Hawaii that would modify the passing rules and assist the defense. One would keep illegal defensive contact as a 5-yard penalty but not an automatic first down, as it currently is. The other would be to institute the college football rule for pass interference and make it a 15-yard penalty unless it was flagrant, in which case it would be a spot foul. Pass interference within 15 yards would also be spot fouls.

I'm for the Pass Int. rule change.

But the first one just dosen't make sense, because if it is 3rd and 12, the CB will just jam the WR's after the 5 yds. (aka. the Patriots VS. the colts last yaer) and even if the umpire sees it, so what give them the penalty.

That isn't true. If the DBs just go out there and purposely committ a penalty in order to stop the offense, then the offense will get another shot at a conversion from five yards closer.

As for pass interference, it's only fair to give the offense the ball at the spot of the infraction, whether the interference was intentional or not, it's STILL pass interference.

And why the hell is Carl Peterson championing these rule changes? Gonna sign Ty Law or something?
