Top 5 best Jets Backup QBs

Recommended Posts

Pat Ryan is the only long term successful backup in my lifetime.  He's the one who actually won the only playoff game in the O'Brien era.  Interestingly enough two of the greatest seasons by Jets QBs came from "backups"- at least they started the season as backups. 1998 Vinny and 2002 Chad.

Pat Ryan was a valuable # 2 QB. BTW, whenever he played, the offensive line looked so much better.

for a few games in a row i agree.  I do remember that 3 or 4 games in his effectiveness seemed to drop off steeply.

Never heard of this guy.  He played college football for the Bradley Braves in 1956, then turned to baseball, playing minor league ball with the Beaumont Pirates, Grand Fork Chiefs, and San Angelo Pirates from 1957-58.

He then went back to football and was signed by the Baltimore Colts in 1959  and then the Titans (Jets) from 1960-61, where he made his only pro appearances and won his only start in 1960.

He later entered the coaching ranks, lasting as an assistant from 1972-1997 at the collegiate and NFL levels.  Most recently, he was the Arizona Cardinals OC in 1997.  He then retired, and passed away in 2001 at the age of 63.

Pretty fascinating.

It is too bad because he never really got a chance with the Jets, but Jeff Blake would be mine.

I remember he played the last game or two the Nagle year, but then went to Bengals, right? Didn't he go to Pro Bowl for them? That is a great recall.?
