Outside of Ownership, Plenty of Incentives to Lure new GM to Jets

Minus the concerns with ownership

Minus the fact the pilot is actually a plastic skeleton covered in lunch meat with cherry tomatoes for eyes and a baby carrot nose, the plane is perfectly sound except for the many giant holes in the side of the fuselage.

LMAO. You've got to be kidding! What a fluff job this article is.

What about the part where the brand new HC was able to get the previous GM fired before he even held his first scrimmage in pads?

What about the part where we wonder which qualified GM is going to take a job working under that HC. You know, the one that HIRED HIM? Yeah, I'm sure the top guys are lining up to be hired by a guy with Gase's reputation, people skills, and charming personality.

But this article makes perfect sense to those who think good organizations are run like this, and good candidates want to work for a team where the man working under them anywhere else is their superior.

Exactly.  And this past offseason was the most attractive this job was going to get for a GM (at least if CJ gave a GM the power).  He could've drafted his own players, spent $100M in free agency and hired his own coach.  Now it's a situation we're he's stuck w/ a HC, stuck with a previous GM's players, and has less money (IIRC $40M) to spend.  That plus the HC wouldn't report to him.  Not to mention the HC is a power-hungry nutjob who the owner trusts completely.

The middle of the defense might be the strongest part of the team with Williams and Williams up front, multiple time pro-bowler CJ Mosley joining Avery Williamson at inside linebacker, and All-Pro safety Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye behind them.

This would be a fine personnel group if it was 1976 and the counter-trey was all you had to worry about

Agreed.   Everyone knew that January was the time to make these changes, it was obvious.  The Johnsons however are just as indecisive as Maccagnan was and couldn’t stomach having to find both a GM and a HC in the same offseason again.  So they kept the failing GM, hired a HC that doesn’t report to the failing GM and created yet another cycle of dysfunction.   The Johnsons are inept at running a football organization.  It’s beyond getting old now.

The revenue structure of the NFL is basically a license for owners to print $. There is absolutely no incentive for Woody and Chris to make any major changes in how they run the Jets. Every one on the planet knows that they are terrible, but they could care less. In their eyes, the way they operate is a success, and they will not change it. They rearrange the furniture every few years, hire new coaches and GM's, but never build a new house. They simply don't care .

I agree with this article. There's no denying this team has some nice pieces in place. Now with the major avenues of player change gone by, the GM will have almost an entire year to evaluate the roster.

This is also not to mention that fine tuning to the roster can still happen. The Jets are well situated with nearly 40 million in cap space and still awaiting June 1st cuts and final roster cuts.

The fact is, this is every bit a dream job for a new young guy trying to make a name as a GM. The ONLY downside the way I see it is NOT ownership, it is inheriting a HC. However, you could do far worse than Adam Gase. The guy could have inherited TODD BOWLES.

I'm as disappointed at the way Mac's firing went down as much as anyone else. But I had the chance to think about it and once you realize the talent infusion is there now, the correct HC and DC are now in place, and there's still freedom for the new GM to make changes, you understand things aren't so bad.

The roster mac built is good enough to make a playoff run.  No amount of illogical hatred will change that fact.  Let's hope Gase is as good as he thinks he is.

How is it a “fact” that a roster that was 4-12 last year is now “good enough to make a playoff run”?

The only time the Johnsons were remotely concerned about putting a competitive team on the field was when they were going to have to swindle people into buying PSLs.  Other than that, there simply isn’t an incentive for them to win.  They will be in the top 10 in total revenue whether they win 3 games or 13.

All of the big brain ideas went into the new uniforms to be fair

actually we’re entering Phase XVII of Rebuild 3.1, so there’s no pressure to make the playoffs this year

An improved roster after free agency and the draft along with the growth of our returning players. Sam Darnold is likely to make a big jump in year two, especially with Adam Gase as his head coach.

Rex inherited a triple-A squad from Mangini that he had to carry to victory by sheer force of will, but Gase is inheriting the ‘96 49ers.

Sometimes a fluff job is just fun to watch...don't deny this old man a guilty pleasure.

The Jets are far from a well-run organization but at least they got rid of the man most responsible (excluding the silver spoon brothers) for the past five years of ineptitude.

There's a few interesting story lines that still need to play out and I for one and interested to see the next installment.

These are technically “hopes and dreams.” Not facts.

All the pressure is on Gase now he has to show he can Steer Sam progress forward- that will be the key for your Jets success-steady and competent QB play can solve what has been a shadow over this team forever

That is the biggest part. Any GM would pause if a young, hot-headed unproven coach could get him fired by just complaining to the owner. The Jets set a precedent that makes it an unattractive job unless you are a yes man.

I like my chances of pouring out some liquor on the skeptical replies this December.

They're obviously laying the groundwork for being able to give 100% of the credit for the teams success in 19' to Gase and whatever yes man he brings in.

Close..  anyone who isn't ignoring reality understands this is phase 3 of the rebuild.

- Tear it down

- Find the QB

- Contend for playoffs

You can hate on Macc all you want but he leaves with the plan progressing nicely.
