2020 Free Agent Class

Recommended Posts

Current projections have the Jets sitting at $46.3M in cap space following the 2019 season.  With LT Kelvin Beachum, DT Leonard Williams, WR Robby Anderson, CB Brian Poole and NT Steve McLendon scheduled to hit free agency, we may be able to play the compensatory pick game effectively and gain some picks.  But if we opt not to go that route, here are some of the key potential free agents coming up in 2020, with the ones the Jets could/should be interested in in bold:

QB

  • Drew Brees
  • Tom Brady
  • Dak Prescott
  • Eli Manning
  • Teddy Bridgewater
  • Jameis Winston
  • Marcus Mariota
  • Case Keenum
  • Chase Daniel

RB

  • Melvin Gordon
  • Lamar Miller
  • Lesean McCoy
  • Gio Bernard
  • Theo Riddick
  • Chris Thompson

LT

  • Matt Kalil
  • Andrew Whitworth
  • Anthony Castanzo
  • Joe Staley
  • Jason Peters
  • Greg Robinson

C

  • Mike Pouncey
  • Rodney Hudson
  • J.C. Tretter
  • Ben Jones

G

  • Brandon Scherff
  • Mike Iupati
  • Clint Boling

RT

  • La'el Collins
  • Bryan Bulaga
  • Marcus Gilbert
  • Daryl Williams
  • Demar Dotson
  • Jack Conklin

WR

  • Michael Thomas
  • AJ Green
  • Amari Cooper
  • Emmanuel Sanders
  • Randall Cobb
  • Larry Fitzgerald
  • Julian Edelman
  • Devin Funchess
  • Allen Hurns
  • Torrey Smith
  • Cameron Meredith

TE

  • Kyle Rudolph
  • Eric Ebron
  • Jack Doyle
  • Tyler Eifert

EDGE

  • DeMarcus Lawrence
  • Jadeveon Clowney
  • Chris Jones
  • Ezekiel Ansah
  • Dante Fowler
  • Jabaal Sheard
  • Robert Quinn
  • Whitney Mercilus
  • Vic Beasley
  • Shaq Lawson

CB

  • Aqib Talib
  • Chris Harris
  • Bradley Roby
  • Logan Ryan
  • Ronald Darby
  • Jimmy Smith
  • Darqueze Dennard

DL

  • DT Grady Jarrett
  • DT Michael Brockers
  • DE Mike Daniels
  • DE Derek Wolfe
  • DT Jordan Phillips

ILB

  • Bobby Wagner
  • Danny Trevathan
  • A.J. Klein
  • Kyle Van Noy
  • Wesley Woodyard

S

  • Devin McCourty
  • HaHa Clinton-Dix
  • Rodney McLeod
  • D.J. Swearinger
  • Karl Joseph

My observations:

  • We can clear some additional cap space next by cutting/trading:  1) Osemele if he is a bust ($11.7M savings, $0 dead money); 2) Trumaine Johnson after June 1 ($11M in savings and only $4M in dead money); 3) Quincy Enunwa after June 1 ($6M in cap savings,  $1.8M in dead money); 4) Brian Winters ($7.5M savings, $0 dead money).
  • A franchise LT likely needs to come via the draft, but if any of the top LT's on the market hit free agency, they need to be targeted to upgrade from Beachum.
  • If Harrison/Toth fail this year, one of the top Centers is an absolute must given our negligence of the position this past offseason.
  • Plenty of nice CB1's available.  We should be targeting all of the ones bolded on this list.  Logan Ryan would be a solid get as a slot corner.

Don't worry, I've been told all offseason that we're fine at offensive line. Just bring in a bunch of average lineman and Darnold will be fine. Instead let's make it 3 years in a row signing MLB's and maybe an $18 million DT to replace Leo. How is Quinnen supposed to be good if he doesn't have great players around him?

(That's sarcasm for the people who are sarcasm deficient and don't see the dripping sarcasm all over my post)

Russell Wilson just got a $65MM signing bonus. Pretty sure he's not going to find himself in the FA pool.

I like that the very first player in this list is not a free agent.

Great.  One mistake and this thread enters dumpsville.  lol.

F**k the 2020 free agent class.  The 2020 draft class is where it is at.   Will be able to completely retool the receiving group next year.  If all these guys come out, it’s going to be playmakers galore!

How are the LT prospects looking?

Some good ones at the top of the group.   Not sure what the depth looks like right now, but a couple legit prospects will be there.

Nice.

If we can address LT and WR in the draft, I'll still want an elite C and CB from this FA class.

I have to be honest, I never really see the point in discussing Free Agents >1 year ahead of that off-season.

So many of these guys will either be resigned or traded, or get hurt, or retire for this reason or that, or play poorly, there is just too much uncertainty when you're >1 year away.

No point getting invested in the idea of acquiring one of these guys when they're resigned by their team long before we get to 2020.  /shrug, not meant as an insult to the OP.

Plus there's no way to know what our needs will be, based on progression. regression, injuries, suspensions ...

Not sure you can get an elite C in free agency, but Tyler Biadasz from Wisconsin is a mean dude.   He may go first round though.

Agreed. Jets need to go LT, WR, WR in the 2020 Draft. After all these drafts where we’ve been told they’re heavy on Defensive talent this is finally the one that’s clearly full of Offense! Probably 5 franchise caliber LTs in Round 1 and WRs throughout.

Agreed.   This WR group could be better than the 2014 class, especially the top 5 or 6 guys.

Probably not.  I just looked it up, and all the teams with the Centers below hitting free agency are going to be in really good cap shape after the 2019 season, and will likely re-sign them:

Center

  • Mike Pouncey (LAC)
  • Rodney Hudson (OAK)
  • J.C. Tretter (CLE)
  • Ben Jones (TEN)

Well I don't want to talk about our Oline as it is this year, so I like the list and what it might mean with a non retard running the front office next time free agency rolls around

You know a competent GM would be studying this list.

The search for a #1 WR continues..................

No way the saints let Thomas hit the market, ditto for Cowboys and Cooper

Green has one foot in the retirement home

Other than that none of those names interest me at all

Absolute too early.  But until we hire a GM there's not much to talk about, so I figured it might be worthwhile.

Oh I feel ya man, truly.  Just saying, it's so far away in real terms, it's possible not a single player listed at any of the O-Line positions on the list will actually be available by the time we get to that point.   Makes any reasonable discussion sorta hard is all.

I highly doubt that at this point.  They know better than us how few of these "potential" FA will actually be available and still desirable by that point.  The front office is always looking at everything, but the GM himself isnt looking at that list yet.

Yah, no stress, like I said wasn't meant as criticism of you my friend.  Just pointing out the inherant uncertainty of >1 year ahead FA lists.

But couldn't some of these guys be traded this year, since they're on the last year of their deals?  It's pretty rare to see that happen like it does in the MLB, but its worth considering.
