With Joe Douglas around, guys w/ elite offensive skills like robbie anderson will be resigned.

While defensive guys w/ non elite skills like leonard williams will be shown the door.

And there is no reason for you to say this.  Any other pearls Nostradamus? LOL

Its the truth though.  Joe Douglas understands todays game.  Robbie is one of, if not the best deep threat in the league.  More then just huge chunk plays, it opens up alot underneath for Sam.  You dont let someone like that walk out the door.

And on the flip side, you dont spend big bucks on defensive players that dont make game changing plays or sack the Qb.  You can find a guy in the 3rd or 4th round who can do what leo does.

The days of us overpaying JAGs on def and ignoring the offensive side of the ball are over.  Broadway Joe Douglas is here now.  Get used it it!!!

Except in his conference yesterday Douglas said he believes that you build a team by building a strong offensive AND defensive line.

Umm... Joe Douglas came from the Eagles. The Eagles re-signed Brandon Graham who doesn’t have great sack numbers. They drafted Barnett in round 1 who isn’t a size, speed, weight guy. They traded for and re-signed Timmy Jernigan in the last two years. They prioritized Michael Bennett and Chris Long and re-signed Vinny Curry this off-season. The Eagles valued and acquired a lot of DL with questionable sack totals while Joe Douglas was there.

i fully expect Douglas to re-sign Leo soon.

Well you have some major differences there.  LOL

Grahan cost $3.5 M,  Jernigan cost $1.6M , Curry cost $2.1M.

Leo earns $14,000,000 who is also a DL with questionable sack totals.  Difference is for the 3 of them it cost $7.2M  Slightly  over half of what it cost to put Leo out there. I'm not expecting Douglas to re-sign Leo any time in the near future.

If he has 12 sacks this year, we'll see

Adam gase didnt want to give mosely and bell that kind of money.  And they are actually good at their respective positions.

No way in hell they resign that jag leonard williams.

Except what you’re saying isn’t actually true. Graham has a cap charge of $3.5 million but that’s because Graham was extended for 3 years with almost $30million in guarantees pushed into the next 3 years. Jernigan was cut and re-signed so he’s getting $1.6 million plus the $6 million left over from his prorated bonus after he was cut. In the next 2 seasons, just those 2 players will cost about $25 million against the cap over a 2 years span.

Leo is going to want in the area on 16-18 million.  You want to pay him that NOW  for 7 sacks over the last 2 years?  LOL,  OK   $36,000,000 guaranteed over the next two years for projected 7 more sacks.  Yeah I'm sure Douglas and Gase are all in

Graham also has 25.5 sacks alone over the last 4 years.  Leo has 17.

If you sign him now you can avoid the possibility of Leo having a great contract year. Leo’s value is lower now than it might be in 9 months. I expect Joe Douglas knows this and tries to lock in Leo at about $12 million a year.

In all honesty I expect Douglas to do the smart thing, and watch the game tapes last year.  He'll see Leo doing a lot of jogging around if the play is away from him.  Let him play out this year, if he gets 12-14 sacks, tag him.  If not, let him walk.

Nothing would be more Maccagnan than to let Leo play a year under this tag and then have to pay him franchise tag money in order to maybe have to pay him a bloated cap figure.

Well we can look at Mac and see exactly what he did.  Give a lazy DT huge money, and have the guy never play another good down again.  Check

Yeah lets do a repeat

Paying Leo $12 million a year to free up cap space and pay him before a possible aberration year is not the same as paying $17 million a year to a guy with effort concerns after a career year and a broken leg.

Both Mo and Leo have/had serious effort concerns.  At least Mo had one year with good production.  You want to guarantee Leo tens of millions off a no-effort year.  Yikes

This $12M your talking about is a made up #.    Really don't see Leo leaving $14,000,000 on the table to make 12.   Really can't see any way Douglas is dumb enough to pony up the kind of money it takes with Leo off the year he just had.

1.  Gase had no problem with Mosely being signed, hes said it repeatedly that he wanted and targeted him to lead the D.

2.  All we know is he didnt want to pay Bell what it was rumoured he wanted after turning down what Pitt offered and talk of a $100 mil contract.

Because you phrase it as “a 3 year extension including $30 million guaranteed,” and it sounds better than taking a one year pay cut. The idea that you wait and see if Leo can demand more money and hold the team hostage for an offseason is... bad.

They don't need cap money.  After the rookies they still have like $24,000,000.  Most of which they'll roll into next season.  Unless they find a steal on the waiver wire.

Giving a lazy player a long term, big money deal, after a low production season is not only bad, but dumb, and not going to happen.

IMO Douglas is going to do the smart thing and wait to see what happens this season with Leo.

The problem is that a lot of people on this forum just repeat everything the beat writers put in their Headlines because they don't care to research that they have been refuted in various ways. It fits their narrative so the beat writers must be right.

And then what? Leo gets 12 sacks in a contract year... what’s the smart move? Pay him at least $16 million a year? Franchise him and prolong the process? Let him walk and recoup a 3rd rounder next year?

The time to make a move is now. Cap space will matter in a 2 years when Adams and an entire o-line needs to be signed. Heck, even next year we might have 5 new players on the o-line. The money we save now is important because Macc’s rebuild left us with a window that is literally only this year. After 2019, we’ll have $60 million in cap space but no o-linemen, 2 average NFL receivers and a bunch of expiring contacts.

Worse yet, some take what a blogger, someone who has never been in the locker room and expand on an idea making it much worse.

We went from Douglas and Jets negotiating a budget for the scouting group and it was expanded into the cheap Jets didnt want to pay Douglas and he walked.

Which Douglas shot down

Serious question.  What has Leo done in the last 4 years that convinces you he should get a big money extension?

17 sacks in 4 years is very meh. Plus he was dogging it last year.  IMO he can go join Mo.  His replacement is already in the building.

He get's 16 sacks in a walk year, proves to be a leader and a force on defense, we go to the AFC Championship game and we sign him long term and he becomes an all time Jet.

Or none of that happens and we let him walk.

I'm not worrying about the cap 2 years from now.

The point is to try and avoid a HUGE payday and give him a one relative to his performance currently. He’ll be 25 years old soon. He has talent around him and he’s considered good but not great at his position. His compensation on the open market will be at least the deal that Richardson got 3 years/ $37 million. Give him that now and avoid having to give him the Kawann Short 5 year/ $80 million deal.

You’re not worrying but it IS Joe Douglas’s job to set us up to succeed before Darnold’s pay day. Next year we don’t have an offense to field because of Macc’s incompetence.
