Gase not done yet: Adds WR Deonte Thompson

Recommended Posts

Well that's the Legget spot. I guess he see's more potential for an often cut WR than the TE.  He has KR potential too so there's that. We've done a nice job of adding a lot of guys who could fill that role. We will see a nice robust competition for our return duties this year which will be fun to see.

My first thought was that this was a special teams move. But isn't that why Josh Bellamy was signed?

Adam is taking his job very seriously as an interim GM.

As an FYI to mods, if you want to merge these Adam Gase transactions into other threads to streamline it like our scouting department, then please go ahead. ;)

Someone has to do it.

You have to give him credit they are operating and making transactions.  Not big ones business as usual but it's a good sign. I don't know who in the org is in the loop. More people are going to be fired and these guys know it. Gase has lists of players he likes and wants on the roster, he has people in place to push the paperwork, hopefully cap specialists (something Tannenbaum is pretty good at) if Gase can work within this infrastructure (or any infrastructure---that's the question) we'll see how it goes. We don't need someone new coming in not on board with Gase and we know what that would mean. It would be even crazier but it would give most of us a lot to talk about. Here we thought we might have a peaceful summer until training camp. No. Way.

Josh Bellamy is a JAG wont make the final 53.

I read Gase specifically wanted Bellamy, that would be only reason I think he will make team. However Gase is possibly a psycho nut job so he could always change his mind ?

Are beat reporters really supposed to be trolls?  Why do I feel that if Manish was a poster here he would get himself banned within days?

Manish is in the midst of a huge career crisis.  He knows that without his Sugar MacDaddy there anymore, he is going to have to actually work, investigate and put an effort into remaining relevant.  But we should all fully expect the traditional strolls down memory lane (or should I say "troll" down memory lane) of ineptitude just to spark some clicks and just for him to vent.

He is such a little pecker-head, isn't he?

And when Joe Douglas comes in he will have full control of the 53, as Adam said.  In the meantime there are players out there to be grabbed.  You do understand this, Manish?

It's very obvious why beat reporters (most notably Manish) are acting out.

Maccagnan was a source for them within the organization.

Gase has completely frozen them out and has zero interest in talking to the media. They've lost their best sources for inside info.

I don't think Manish's actions are the best way to get in tight with the new regime.

The answer is yes.

But Bellamy was signed by Macc so.....you know.....we got Gase now.

Thompson also played under Gase with the Bears 4 years ago.

So did Bellamy (in CHI). That was touted as a "Gase guy" signing.

They seem to be 1 in the same player (type)

He doesn't care.  He is in the midst of a career tantrum.

Good luck with Gase and his hand picked Joe Douglas, Manish.  LOL!

camp competetion!!!!

I like the idea.  So should everyone.  Let the better of Bellamy/Thompson prevail.  Sounds like a GOOD move to me.

Gase wanted Bellamy, the Jets signed him to a 2-year deal early in FA and gave him decent guaranteed money. He's a near cert to make the team, and has a much better chance than Thompson who came in as a tryout and probably got 1 year at the vet minimum.

Jets were actually a pretty leak-free ship under Mac

Another Gator, any comments @JiF?  Guy had a good 3 cone, but he is old - 30.  Gase had him in Chicago.  To be fair, he did have his best season in 2017 split between the Bills and Bears (where Jets OC Loggans was coaching).  Returns kicks, not punts.

Shocked he’s still in the league

None of Gase's moves are inspiring and none of these are moves that move the needle. Really nothing to see here, IMO.

Traded D.Lee. Ok. To me, this makes a statement that they won't be dealing with guys who have off field issues. But that's about it. Lee was cheap and is coming off his best season. Still young. Healthy. There is no other reason to trade him. Not right now at least. Not for a throw away 6th rounder. At least let him compete for a spot and if he makes the team trade him once a better offer comes up. Are you telling me G.Williams couldn't find a role for Lee? A LB who ca fly all over the field and has coverage ability.

Brought in a punter. Ok. Great. Give some competition to Lach. Yawn.

Cut Leggett. Again, what's so great about this move? Are we running out of roster spots right now? I didn't really see him making the team anyway.

Fired a scout. Ok. Makes sense to me now that Macc is gone. Obviously a big part of WHY Macc was fired is b/c Gase was not given enough input into scouting and drafting the players he wanted. Is this surprising.

Brings in Thompson. Ok. I don't mind this move. But another big Yawn from me. How about we swing a trade for an impact WR instead of signing 30 yr old JAG who would have to fight to make the roster.  Would rather see this spot given to Dortch. At least he is young and has room to grow, can do some of the same things in the return game.

I'm really not impressed with Gase as GM so far, let's see if the Jets can bring someone in soon. Looking forward to Gase COACHING.
