Terrelle Pryor - remind me what happened

Was watching some Sammy D highlights from last year, and Pryor made some huge catches and TDs. Looked like a really nice, viable big body guy.

What the hell happened to him? Was he injured, or did he just fade away?

I was disappointed when we cut him since he seemed to have nice chemistry with Sam. I felt at the time it was something else in addition to an injury.

Here's the timeline:

  • 2016:  Browns sign Pryor.  He has by far his best season, catching 77 passes for 1,007 yards and 4 TD's.  However, his catch rate (55 %) was not great, as it required 140 targets to reach those numbers.
  • 2017:  Redskins sign Pryor as a UFA to a 1-year, $6M deal.  He has a poor season playing with Kirk Cousins, catching just 20 passes for 240 yards and 1 TD over 11 games before being placed on IR in November (ankle surgery)
  • March 2018:  Jets sign Pryor as a UFA.
  • August 2018:  Pryor gets into it on Twitter with former Redskins teammates, who evidently despise the guy.  Prior to the Jets-Redskins joint practice, an article comes out stating that cheap shots by the Skins will be "handled accordingly" by the Jets.  During the practice, Pryor gets into a light shoving match with CB Josh Norman, but no punches are thrown.
  • October 2018:  After 6 games and just 235 yards on 14 catches and 2 TD's, the Jets decide to cut Pryor.  11 days later he is signed by the Bills.
  • November 2018:  Bills cut Pryor after 2 games.  He made 2 catches for 17 yards.
  • February 2019:  An article is released where Pryor expresses regret for leaving the Browns as a free agent after 2016.
  • May 1, 2019:  Pryor, a Free Agent, gets a workout with the Seattle Seahawks, but is not signed.

Summary:  Pryor is injury-prone, a jerk, and just not all that good at football.

Even in that 2016 season where he put up very good fantasy numbers, FO ranked him the # 60 WR in the league per DVOA.

Granted, the Browns used 6 different QB's that year (Cody Kessler - 8 starts; RG3 - 5 starts; Josh McCown - 3 starts; ; Kevin Hogan, Charlie Whitehurst, and Pryor himself), but given that he couldn't come close to replicating those numbers with a competent QB in Cousins, it was just a flukey year.

Throughout Bowles tenure there always seemed to be "that guy" who faded out or was in the dog house it happened to Kerley,Kearse and Pryor.

Man that Todd Bowles really has some influence around the league....

Pryor has played a total of 2 games after leaving Bowles doghouse

There are many guys who after playing for the NY Jets fall off the face of earth football wise.

In the list of Mac mistakes, this one is usually not included, although it should be, because the Jets wasted a fair bit of cap space on this experiment.

Nobody is worried about cap space because we had so much, but I agree. It certainly could have been better spent elsewhere.

That was another instance of the #1 point that proved Maccagnan was without question incompetent completely independently of Bowles.  To this day, there has still yet to be a single one of Mac's acquisitions that went on to have greater success after leaving the Jets.  The overwhelming majority end up out of the league either immediately, or shortly thereafter.  Not sure why it took Chris Johnson an additional 4 months to piece that all together, but at least it happened eventually.

When the entire NFL doesn't want a guy, that's a pretty good sign that his lack of retention may have been justified.

Very similar to the Braylon situation. Started with the Browns, made their ways here, flashed some playmaking potential, but were mysteriously cut/not resigned by the Jets and then floated around before eventually fizzling out of the league.

Is it that much of a mystery in that case?  If we cut a player and he never sticks anywhere else....it pretty much simply means he sucked, and provided no utility on the bottom of a roster because of an inability to contribute on special teams.  No mystery there.

Given that the Bills signed him 11 days later and put him on the field immediately, it seems unlikely he was cut due to injury.

He was hurt.  They gave him an injury settlement.  He is bitchy about injuries.  That is one of the reasons the guys in Washington wanted to crush him.
