‘ Jets West ’ camp.. a return ? ? ?

Recommended Posts

Mark Sanchez dubbed it “Jets West.”

Every offseason, he’d bring together a group of skill-position teammates to get in extra offseason work, both on the field and in the film room. Sanchez, a California boy, would have everyone visit him in Mission Viejo, hence the name.

Now the Jets have another Cali-bred quarterback in Sam Darnold. So any chance of a Jets West revival?

“Definitely looking to meet up with some of my teammates, especially receivers, running backs, skill guys, to be able to get that rapport with them in terms of route running and timing,” Darnold said. “So, I’m sure one weekend or during the weeks at some point, we’ll get some time together.”The only question mark is where the Jets’ players will meet up – Darnold left the door open to either an East or West Coast powwow. So, maybe the camp’s name will need to be reworked, but the gist of it seems to be back in action.

Of course, these types of offseason get-togethers are not uncommon around the league. But it will be fascinating to see where and when Darnold chooses to meet up with his teammates – and which players participate. Plus, Darnold’s willingness to plan and execute such a weekend retreat during his first full NFL offseason is certainly an encouraging sign of maturity and leadership for the 21-year-old quarterback. In the meantime, Darnold did say that he’ll spend a chunk of the Jets’ six (or so) week break between next week OTAs and the start of training camp back home in California, relaxing with friends and family.

That was one of the things I liked about Sanchez. It offered hope that the timing and rapport would be that much better. I think it helped too. Only problem was Sanches had no ability to sense pressure like Sam and the talent ceiling was much lower.  Still a great idea. Sanchez' commitment to it was certainly one of his stronger attributes. Too bad he sucked at stuff.

Where did Sam go to High School? could be a good place, don't think USC is allowed to let them practice there

agree it was great idea and seemed to help when Mark actually had skill players - sad thing is Mark counted on his good luck and lost his focus to underage girls and bright lights at night

Mark needed a HC not a best bud - Rex should have benched him after that Titans game - the buttfumble would never have happened

Sam already seems more mature and ready for the challenge

Not to mention, a WAY better player.

Yes Sanchez had everything Darnold had except anticipation, awareness, and a good arm, and throwing on the move, and throwing guys open, and a work ethic.

Sanchez would throw defenders open.

Darnold's vision allows him to throw the ball a beat or two early, before they're open, while Sanchez was consistently double clutching after they were already open.

Mark and Sam are from the same general area.

Mark played HS mid-Orange County.  Sam-southern OC, almost San Diego/Camp Pendleton.

Beautiful part of the country.
