Should Players Be Able To Retire Then Comeback For The Playoffs?

Recommended Posts

could be a good option for discussion in the next CBA - add back two-a-days and real practices back to training camp and maybe OTA's but allow ~7 year veterans to opt out on some type of schedule, let each team declare a retire4return list for ~10 year veterans to earn some extra cash and maybe finally earn a ring (retire4reserve draft?)  could create secondary careers for some of these guys - would make playoffs more interesting

Sports talk are the ones saying it. I’m assuming they’d know the rules. I have no clue what the rules are.

I think the Pats can put him on some inactive exempt roster spot list, and then just activate him from that list when if he wants.

Going back to the 2 a days, real practice ect. which is what’s hurting this game the most IMO is the right answer in the next CBA, BUT the players need to get back fully guaranteed contracts in exchange for that.

No. They didn’t play all year and their bodies aren’t in football shape. You can tear a ligament or break a bone a lot faster when you aren’t conditioned to take the hits that you’ll be taking come playoff time. — don’t get me wrong..that certainly can happen anyway but when you’re not there physically then you just aren’t there. They say the only way to get into “football shape” IS to take some licks. That usually comes for players in training camp.

All they would have to do is stay in top shape, them come back 3 weeks before the playoffs.  Play lightly in those three games.  For older guys their  body wouldn't be battered from the season, and they would be in good football shape like they just came out of camp.

Actually a great idea

How was he getting dominated?

I'm not saying he turned invisable, but Gronk had his way with just about anyone who tried to defend him. His combo of size, speed, and agility was unstoppable.  As of late, he was getting beaten more that he was beating them. Look at how Adam's matched up on him the last season. Adam won more than lost.

He’s a millionaire involved with a good franchise that has access to the best trainers. He could easily be in good enough shape to play three important games. He could come back at the end of the season and have two weeks before the first game.

If he isn't  working out all year round,  he won't  be in football shape. He will be in good, maybe better than good, but he didn't  retire to spend all his time in a gym.

Lets ask this, how do you stop it?  Its not illegal.  It's not close to skirting any law.  And it does go against any league rule.

Never mind there is no proof that it will happen or that the player will be able to just jump in and be better than whoevers time hes taking away

I’m 90% sure but a could be wrong. @Sperm Edwards is good with contract stuff.

Player can't retire his way out of a contract to get out any earlier, otherwise it'd be a commonly used tool (instead of a player holding out). e.g. L.Bell would have just "retired" in March last year, and then un-retired a week or a month after that.

Haven't read the rest of this thread yet. Is this what you were asking?

But he still had 700 yards and was a tremendous downfield blocker

What actually happened is Gronk doesn’t want to be traded.

Yes, but we are talking about Gronk here. Those aren't Gronk like numbers. He also only scored 3 times all year. Gronk use to be unstoppable in the red zone.

Yeah but he’s not done he’s just not as good.  There’s a difference between ESPN soundbytes and reality
