There's not one person that has been alive for 112 years that has used Redskin as a slur.

Probably because we killed off most of them around the same time-frame.

I loathe the name.  I loathe the team.

Other than that, unsurprising beaten-dead-horse-thread is unsurprising and........wait for it.......beaten to death.  :-k

USED the term. The point is no one cares. But that doesn't help you, does it?

Plenty of people care.  Just not here at JN.

And what makes you think that I need to be helped in this situation.

The poll was of only 500 people who "self-identified" as Native.  Hardly a great or true sampling of the millions of native Americans feelings.  Even then, ~10% were opposed to the name/found it offensive.

Other polls (by ESPN) more broadly found 23% of general respondents were opposed to the name.

And 28% of DC-area resident were opposed to the name in a previous Washington Post poll.

So here is a question, why keep a name that offends anywhere from 10-30% of the people in the marketplace?

I'm willing to bet less than 1% is bothered by almost any other name int he NFL (the Chiefs maybe the only other one that might poll at 5% or higher, but it gets far less complaint than the Redskins, for good reason).

The name was chosen by one of the most blatantly racist owners in NFL history.  If you're unaware of this teams history, you should read up on it.

The team represent a city that is majority minority population, with it's own sad history of racism and racist strife.

So knowing all that, why keep the name?  Is there some sick pride in telling people bothered by it to **** off?  Is there some twisted crusade to be against "PC culture", i.e. having a modicum of respect for other minority people and cultures, and to instead promote a business consciously being offensive to 10-30% of the population as some kind of point of pride?

I just honestly don't get it.  The name unquestionably has a historic racist history.  Anyone denying that fact is akin to a holocaust denier, and should frankly be shouted down on the spot for such ignorance.

Just change the damn name, the team will make more money (happens with every name or uniform change), will get great PR and pub for doing it (for a franchise worse than even the Jets in the last decade), and no one has cause for offense.

It's literally a win/win/win to do it.

I'm hard pressed to see a single reason not to do it tbqh.  Well, apart from one reason...

It's rather telling when someone feels SO strongly about keeping a blatantly racist name for a team they don't even root for that they mass neg-rep posts about why the name is an issue.

The internet never disappoints, but also never surprises.

I don't think anyone should get a neg rep for having a different opinion but you feel strongly the other way and it's not the team you root for..

I do feel strongly, yes.  We all should IMO when it comes to rooting out and ending racism.

While I do not root for the Burgundy & Gold, I DO live here.  I have a vested local interest.

Here is a good test of the pro-Redskins folks:

Go ahead and refer to every poster at JN and every person you meet in public as "whiteskin", "blackskin", "redskin", "yellowskin" and "brownskin" for the rest of the week.

Since it's clearly no big deal to use such terms, and definitely not racism, surely only, say 9% (the safe space snowflakes, right?) of JN forum users or randoms on the street will be offended, right?  And that would justify the continuing to use these terms forever, right?

It would be tradition then, and heaven forbid we screw with tradition!

Don't just talk the talk, walk the walk. :-k

You're never going to totally end racism, people are always going to think they are better than someone else. It's human nature.

We cannot 100% eliminate it, so why bother at all?

And yes, will will get past it, "human nature" is nothing but a social construct, a way of explaining how people are raised and taught.

When old racists die off, and new generations are taught differently, racism (like any ignorant idea) will dry up and die off as well.  We may never get 100%, but we'll get 99.9%, and those remaining can hang out with the Moon Landing Was Faked Flat Earther World is only 5,000 Years Old types.

Tradition . If Snyder wanted to change it that would be his choice.

You're quite right, Snyder doesn't want to change it.

Same way the KKK didn't want to change the names of places named after Confederates either.

Tradition!

I see racism in a different way..If the color of one's skin keeps someone from having a better life, job or being able do do what everyone one else does obviously that's wrong.

Obviously.

Easy to say when you're what we are my friend.  We've never faced anything like what they have.

A Redskins hat? :-k  ;)

People constantly try to use a food group or a article of clothing to mean something it shouldn't IMO..

The historical context of "Redskins", and the genocide that occurred here, should make the distaste towards it's use quite obvious.

Of course, we likely have people here who would vigorously deny there was a genocide.....

And I would say some back, we would get into a fist fight or go our separate ways, it would be between us.

If you have to counter words with fists, you've already lost my friend, no matter how the fight goes.

There is no slippery slope here.  There is no "today them come for Redskin, tomorrow they come for Jesus".

Just toss the historically questionable racial/racist words, and we'll all be better off as a society.

It's putting a different meaning to a word or thing that was intended.

OH, like a Swastika then?

So swastikas are ok, because the original meaning was a buddhist/hindu religious symbol, right?

Surely the meaning of a thing can't change from ok to not ok over time........
