Potential Surprise Cuts

Recommended Posts

You know there will be some surprise cuts given the new coach and FO.  Who will it be?

  • Bilal Powell - Although Powell is on a team friendly deal, he's 30 and vulnerable.  If McGuire and Cannon play well and show something, Bilal could be BeGone.
  • Brent Qvale - Maybe not much of a surprise but it's entirely possible.  Not much cap savings ($850k) but he hasn't shown much and could be replaced by a youngster with potential.  That may be someone on the roster today or a waiver wire pickup.
  • Brian Winters - Remember the title is SURPRISE cuts.  If a (veteran) guard with a pulse becomes available Winters could be a $6mm cap saving.
  • Brandon Shell - If Shell is a shell of his former self, he may get the ax.  Even if he's the same as before, if Chuma shows something, Shell could be a victim of the ax.
  • Steve McClendon - Again, if a youngster shows he can fill in admirably the 33 year old may be gone too.  Are you listening Sheppard and Fatukasi???

Dude. Did Jamal sh*t on your lawn or something? It's borderline psychotic at this point.

(Drafting an athletically limited strong safety sixth overall was a joke played on the rest of us)

they all kind of go without saying.  imo it all depends on how much gase/williams view this as a win now team.  if that's what they think then they may decide to keep the vets over the young guys.  either way it's a good thing if the young guys are able to push the vets in camp.

Does anyone think Shell could possibly move to guard?

I think winters is a huge part of the problem for this team, and if Shell could become our RG, then Ugodba could step in at RT and possibly really improve the line as a group.

I looked up Osemele as a comparison and he is listed at 6'5 330 (will play this year at 315) and Shell is listed at 6'5 325 so there is precedent for someone Shell's size moving inside.

Roster seriously has about 10-11 guys worth keeping. No cuts will be a surprise at all. Next thread please.

Neither Shell nor Winters are getting cut.

Not this year anyway, we literally have no depth. Now 2020? I'll put money on it that Winters is toast! He was overpaid on his production because of the sad state of affairs regarding drafting Olineman here.

Some guys just get lucky they're drafted by inept idiots who can't upgrade certain positions because they either miss badly in the draft or don't draft the position at all. Does anyone here believe a team like the Pats would have paid Winters?

Seriously. Darnold, Mosley, and Herndon are probably the only two guys where you’d be legitimately surprised if they were cut or traded. Everyone else is Maccagnan sewage and it largely shows.

Powell isn't a holdover, he was resigned by Joe Douglas and Adam Gase after they finished up their mandatory workouts. Probably more likely that McGuire and Cannon are showing nothing at the RB position. Be no surprise if/when McGuire is cut.

It's a team with a new front office and coaching staff that's been complete garbage for years now. There are no cuts that should be considered slightly surprising under the circumstances.

Well, except maybe Darnold, but if that were to happen I'm sure the Jets would simply be disbanded anyway.

We need players, need depth on the OL.

Being $30 mil over the cap, why would be looking to save $6 mil to the $30, $6 mil that comes off the books next year?

Similar story with Shell, obviously his knee could dictate how it goes

I have to say, at this point, the Jamal Adams love/hate both make more sense to me than the adoration of Marcus Maye.

Mac has been fired, so it does not make sense to talk about how bad he was and the roster is.  But basically, for a team that is rebuilding and an NFL where you can carry forward cap space, it is sad to keep relatively expensive veterans.  So....

Powell-one would have to believe that the Jets could find somebody else less expensive and less likely to get hurt.

Winters-I can see Compton starting.  The Jets need OL depth, so he has them over a barrel a bit, but spending that much money on a mediocre G is not good.  The Jets could have drafted someone in the 4th or 5th round to replace Winters, but Mac choose not to.

Qvale-I would have to think that Mac or Douglas could have found someone to replace Qvale.

Shell-this is the last year of Shell’s rookie contract, and he has been decent.  He can be extended or the Jets will get a comp pick.  No need to get rid of him.  If he is still injured PUP him.

McClendon-after continuing to draft DL, having to keep Steve around for what he gets paid is a shame, although he is a good guy and player.   He should be a back up on a playoff team.

Jenkins-see Shell.  With Mac gone I am wondering what defense Douglas and Gase ultimately choose to run.  But Jenkins is cheap this year and will be signed by another team next year if the Jets don’t renew him.

So in a perfect world, Powell, Winters, Qvale and McClendon would be replaced by younger, cheaper players.

Here's the thing about surprises: you're not supposed to say anything until it actually happens.
