Jets hire Matt Sheldon as director of football research and strategy

Recommended Posts

Find this move intriguing. Jets as an organization making 21 century moves. The stats quo is non existent. Know really nothing about the guy and how he will do but love the approach.

And the dolphins outperformed their talent both years. I'm ok with that

They were 13-19 during his analytics. I’m not jumping for joy.

Gase has some talent to work with here. It's all about Sam & the Oline holding up. Anderson, Enunwa, Crowder, Herndon, Bell & Montgomery are a decent group of offensive players.

What does that have to do with them hiring Sheldon?

On one of the links, a Patriots fan posted this up:

So the jets have quietly put all the right people in place. They have their quarterback of the future coming into his second season, and they made the big splash in free agency. So it’s put up or shut up time in New York. No more excuses Jets fans,,, We’re waiting come take the crown if u can… signed Patriots Nation

It's on.  It's so on.

They had decent talent in Miami as well. Not as good at the qb (decent but not as good) but they had good receivers and running backs

Rich Cimini     ESPN Staff Writer

The Jets have bolstered their analytics department, hiring Matt Sheldon as director of football research and strategy. (This was a quiet move; the team made no announcement.) He held the same title with the Dolphins in 2017-2018 — his connection to Adam Gase. Prior to that, he spent three seasons with the Bears in a similar role, crossing paths with Joe Douglas. Sheldon has a coaching background, but he got involved in analytics in recent years.

That's true, and they won a lot of games when Tannyhill was healthy. I think Gase looks at Sam & sees a guy that can do anything he asks. Accurate short game, accurate sideline throws, good deep ball, he can run right & left and throw. The playbook can grow very quickly, that has to be very exciting for an offensive coach.

I had that game! Margene Adkins was my best player. (#26) he was one of the few that ran in a straight line

An example is how Bellicheck right off the bat on the kickoff touchbacks netting the ball on the 25 yard line mostly has his kicker put the ball inside the 5 so it has to be brought out and for the most part the KR is stopped between the 18-20 yard line. Now that 5-7 yards saved per kickoff position was shown to make major differences in games. That would be something where analytics can assist with strategies like that.

He learned that from Parcells.  He used to do it here all the time

Patriot Nation, formally Giants Nation daring the Jets to take their crown.
