Because you don’t pay 31 year olds who are strictly returnmen almost $4 million a year.

The guy was simply an above-average KR/PR prior to last season with little to no value as a receiver.

Just like you don’t pay $4-5 million a year to bring back Jason Myers, who was incredibly inconsistent throughout his entire career prior to ‘18. Actually has missed more XP’s than any other kicker in the NFL since entering the league.

good points.  i remember when they let guys like chad morton go.  same argument.  and morton gets replaced by another guy who does well.  we'll see soon enough what roberts replacement can do.

Chad Morton made the 2005 Pro Bowl

the Jets used a second rounder 57 overall on Justin Miller to replace Chad Norton.

This was the famous Nugent draft, so essentially those 2 guys were like their 1st round pick that season.

justin miller wasn't half bad at returning kicks.  he just wasn't as good playing corner.  i remember it not as the nugent draft but the doug jolley trade year.  nugent at least was a pretty good kicker and had a good career.

Didnt he make the pro bowl as a return man?

i think he may have.  in any case he did pretty well so it's not like they lost much by giving up morton.  i suspect it will be the same thing with roberts.  these returners are important but not as important as an every down player.  miller's problem is he wasn't a very good corner.

Chad Morton last played for the Jets in 2002.  Justin Miller was drafted in 2005 and he was the replacement?

good call. yes miller came in 2005 and morton's last season was 2002.  in between they kind of had a ko return by committee with carter and jordan and cotchery.  but i think the main issue was why the jets would give up a guy like morton or roberts and in both cases they just aren't worth huge contracts.  imo miller was a better kick returner than morton although there was some let down during the in between years.  the issue with miller is he was drafted high enough that he should've been a decent corner which he wasn't.
