Watching highlights. Why let Andre Roberts go

Recommended Posts

The guy was an awesome returner.

No matter who's running things we never keep our best players.

I was just wondering about this the other day. Even Jason Myers. Both guys had career years last year. Unless they were asking for a ridiculous amount of money, I feel we could have brought 1 if not both back for another year or two.

Because Buffalo paid 4.5 Million for a guy that can't catch... waste of a roster spot.

I agree with this thread.

Said this the moment months ago.

There will always be poor excuses and poor comparisons to justify this stupid decision by Macc.

We're Jets fans so it's to be expected.

To represent accuartely

2019: $2.6 mill

2020: $2 mill - 500k dead cap hit if cut

its a lot of dough for a returner but he was the best returner we’ve had in 10 years. I was sad to see him go. Gase wasn’t happy Mac let him walk but his salary makes up some of the $4 mill overpay for CJ Mosley. I’d rather have Mosley if it’s in a context like that.

Still can't catch.... what good is the 4.6Mil and a roster spot for a KR/PR that can't catch or run routes or cover kicks and punts

The guy was simply an above-average KR/PR prior to last season with little to no value as a receiver.

Just like you don’t pay $4-5 million a year to bring back Jason Myers, who was incredibly inconsistent throughout his entire career prior to ‘18. Actually has missed more XP’s than any other kicker in the NFL since entering the league.

The Bills will find out during some point in the season that they overpaid for Roberts.

Brad Smith was infinitely more valuable to the Jets than Andre Roberts ever was, went to Buffalo, and did nothing. I'm really not too worried about losing Roberts right this minute. The Jets have a few guys with NFL punt and kick returning experience on the roster, plus Greg Dortch, who I'm weirdly excited about (every year I seem to pick a favorite UDFA). I think they'll have returns covered okay this year.

I was all about Deontay Burnett last year. I really think the guy can be a difference maker. Every time he gets a chance, he shines. I’m hoping he doesn’t get lost in the shuffle with the new CS.

I really don’t know anything about Dortch except what you and a few others have said about him. Small, not that fast, but quick and elusive...

Do you think he and Burnett might become an “either, or...” type situation?

I like both. You have to think Sam’s familiarity with Burnett works in his favor as the 4th/5th WR and Dortch is the KOR/PR and sometime WR.

This

Good organizations find Andre Roberts in the 6th round, or later once every 4 years so they never have to over pay a return specialist like him.

Then their are other teams like the Patriots, and SeaHawks who have starters who also double as awesome special teamers.

In today's NFL kick returning is no longer important.  You are better off downing every punt that goes into the end zone and only returning balls that fall short.

Punt returning on the other hand is very important and Roberts was an exceptional punt returner.  Thankfully we signed Dortch who is also a rare talent as a punt returner and comes into the league with a ton of punt returning experience.

Agreed

Just like with Brad Smith. And Smith had a helluva lot more value than Roberts.

He could return kicks, contribute as a WR and wildcat option and even serve as an emergency QB.

Roberts is strictly a return man. He isn’t going to see any time on the field in any other capacity unless your receiving corps is absolutely ravaged by injury as was the case with the Jets late last year.

This is kinda where I’m at. I think Dortch’s path to making the team is directly thru specials. Maybe flashing as a backup slot guy. Has anyone heard of Darnold and Burnett doing work in the offseason? He did look like he had reliable hands and something of a chemistry with Sam. I think he’s another guy in a battle with other teams’ cuts.

Burnett was at Jets West 2.0 with Sam last week so hopefully they are continuing to build chemistry.

I would love for Dortch to become our Tyreek Hill (without the womenz battery).

Speaking of Brad Smith, after he went to Buffalo, what happened to him? He was one of my favorites.

So they can trade a bag of peanuts and 6th rounder for Clowney and pay him.

I understand the post because he did produce in that facet. However, I think we have the coaching staff and front office in place to find a younger, more versatile player that can also contribute in other areas for a better price.

It’s not like we didn’t have $100 million in cap room

good points.  i remember when they let guys like chad morton go.  same argument.  and morton gets replaced by another guy who does well.  we'll see soon enough what roberts replacement can do.

They resigned and kept Boyer from the previous coaching staff because they believe in his ability to get the most out of any KR/PR.

we’ll have to see if that works out. I will say that he set up his guys on the blocks very well. Not taking anything away from Andre Roberts but Boyer had those guys blocking really well, streaking down field and making key blocks. I’m not going to act like I know a ton about Special Team play but they looked coached well. Let’s see what Boyer can get out of someone like Dortch...should he be the next KR/PR.

It’s time to look forward, not back.  New regime, promising young QB, infusion of some really talented offensive weapons (Bell, Crowder) and some exciting young playmakers in Herndon, Robby, etc.

Thank you for a great 2018 Andre, but it’s full steam ahead with the new look Jets!

I'm not going to analyze all of Macc's moves outside of his last picks and FA signings.  We are where we are.  No use crying about spilt milk.

I actually think there is merit to both sides of this argument.

I think it comes down to how each of the Bills and Jets approached the 2019 off season.  It was clear to me that the Bills were going for it-they built up their OL and made other strategic moves to make a difference this season.  By bring aboard Andre Roberts, they add a returner who might win them a game (which could make a difference in a playoff run) and hurt the team that they need to beat at least once to make the playoffs.

The Jets led by Mac, on the other hand, bumbled through the off season and left FA and the Draft with a still unbalanced and incomplete roster.  I think the Bills have a better overall roster than the Jets, although I like Darnold much better than Josh Allen (and that can be all that really matters).

The answer to this issue is very simple. Greg Williams is our defensive coordinator this upcoming season. The opposition won't be scoring many points against our newly great defense so there isn't much need for a kick returner any longer. Once a game for sure to start the game or halftime and maybe once more per game and chances are the ball gets kicked into the end zone where we won't run it out anyway. S0 you wanna pay a player 4 mil to maybe run the ball out once a game? Pass!

Who was the one guy that was a great KR for us and then went to the Skins?

Morton or something?
