Literally speechless...can’t remember a quality player ever unretire for a chance to play with the Jets.

Joe Douglas just did more for the Jets Offensive Line than Mike Maccagnan did in 5 years.

And signing with the Jets!!

Jets sign Ryan Kalil out of retirement – but why did he walk away in the first place?

The Jets just landed a five-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro center.

Those types of players typically aren’t available in August. But Ryan Kalil was ... because he’d recently retired.

Kalil, 34, announced in January of 2018 that he would retire after the 2018 NFL season. His retirement began on Dec. 31, after finishing his 12th season with the Panthers.

false

Now, just a handful of months later, he’s back in the league and changing teams for the first time in his career. But why?

The answer may lie in why he decided to retire in the first place – and what happened after that.

Kalil announced prior to last season that it would be his last year. In 2016, Kalil was limited to just eight games, thanks to a shoulder surgery that cost him substantial time. It also cost him most of his training for the 2017 season, which was then cut short due to a serious neck injury, which required trips to a specialist. Kalil played just six games that season.

But Kalil entered 2018 fully healthy for the first time in nearly two years.

“I didn’t get to start training until right around training camp (in 2017), like actually football training," Kalil told the Charlotte Observer in January 2018. "I just felt way behind and I didn’t feel as physically ready for the season as I would have liked to have been.”

By the sounds of Kalil’s statements from January 2018, that physical toll and frustration all added up and nudged him toward the exit door.

But the veteran followed that up by playing all 16 games during his farewell tour; so perhaps the newfound health helped convince Kalil he still had something left in the tank when Jets general manager Joe Douglas came knocking.

Kind of a bummer for Harrison who has been working so hard to prove everyone wrong that he can be a solid starting C in the NFL. Came in in fantastic shape and has gotten nothing but praise so far. Now you have a retired 34 yr old who has never played for the Jets coming in and taking his spot without working earning it.

Having said that, Kalil is probably still an upgrade, so I'm down with that. And he has a history of injuries so Harrison may end up having to step in eventually.

Good news all around as far as the fans are concerned.

If Kalil is an upgrade, then Harrison didn't earn it either and would have only "earned" the job by being the least-bad option.

If Harrison is better than Kalil, they'll play Harrison. For all the praise, no team truly happy with its center woos a center with injury concerns to come out of retirement.

Just wondering.  He retired as a Panther, don't they have his rights if he comes out of retirement?  Is there some kind of compensation involved here?

Leather pants for Cam, and a sling.

No he was a free agent at the time he retired

Harrison is decent depth in case Kalil gets hurt.

I don’t think this move is necessarily an indictment of Harrison it just means this GM isn’t as complacent as Macc and he appreciates depth

I know a lot of fans dislikeHarrison but he actually wasn’t bad after taking over for Long.  If nothing else he gives us good depth in case of injuries. Either way this was a great move. Getting Osemele was another big addition

well stats disagree wiht you. We didnt dislike him as a person just as a starter. 30th in the league is not good. that is bad.  We are just honest fans and can see he was bad. Your other observations about this being a great move and Osemele was a big addtion - sure.

BUt Harrison was never better or as good as any other center he played. He was always worse, in fact only two other players were worse.  he is 30 out of 32. Your comment is probably the most "Same Old Jets"iest fan perspective I can image. Dare to be great @genot want to be better. Dont settle. The fact you dont think he was bad shows either you dont care or dont care enough to know.

The new FO and coaches were brought in specifically to stop doing this like the past regimes, stop settling...bluntly thier job is to get better. There is no reason to keep a 30th ranked player as your starter the following year in our situation - especially at such a pivotal time and with option that make sense. It woudl have been smarter to sign a good FA in the offseason but Macc attack blew that one. Glad Joe is trying and not just well Harrison player good so let keep him.

when youre a 4-12 team, other than Darnold, who isnt replaceable when a better option becomes available?

Fixed

The same draft we took Adams 6 overall the Bears selected someone I was super high on as a 3rd-4th round Safety ready to step in start, AND was probably the best punt returner in the draft something the Jets were desperate for at the time.

That 4th round Safety is Eddie Jackson, was ranked not to far behind Adams in the top 100 voted by their peers, so yes Adams the player is easily replaceable.

Joe Douglas did not draft Adams, and WHEN Adams starts his contract noise (rightfully so IMO will have no issue with Adams playing the business man like Revis did the owners have been playing it for 75+ years pluck them) Douglas may not want to hand over 12-15 mill per year with like 45 million guaranteed to a SS who can be replaced by a 3rd round pick if your GM is competent.

Now to all you guys who will make the valid argument Adams will be worth the money because his leader of men attribute is something you can’t replace.  To that I will argue that if Darnold like I, and most of the NFL becomes a top QB, and the unquestioned leader on the TEAM both Offense and Defense, all the greats have both units fall in line, then Adams leadership qualities is not really valuable to the Jets so why pay for it if you don’t need it?

No. I agree. Didn't notice the terms. He'll start, if healthy.

Again, if they were thrilled with Harrison at center, then they'd sign another backup, not woo a well-compensated starter out of retirement.

Only if his contract went beyond last year

didn't see this one coming but on the other hand, the guy is 34, coming out of a brief retirement and has an injury history.  is he going to start ot back up harrison?  the obvious answer is he's starting but he's still 34, has an injury history yada yada.

in the end it's only money and it's only for a single season.  not exactly the way i'd want to build an oline. these guys have to play together an bit before they get really good.

Wow, was not expecting a move to upgrade the Center position but I sure am happy it happened. Now Harrison can be a great back-up, does he have experience playing Guard?

Also will be a great mentor for Harry

Don't assume Kalil will get the job just like that. First he has to pass the physical and make the team and I don't think he will be gifted the starting position.  If Harrison outplays him, he should start.
