Dude started 10 games at LT for ravens and held his own overall and then had inside track for starting LG job before injury .

Im not saying he is Star but at worst this is good experienced depth . And little competition for Winters Doesn’t hurt .

why would they cut him so early in TC then?

Don't know why everyone is assuming depth.  I think this guy started like 10 games last year.  Winters is far from a lock

Yah but do to his injury history it would be wise to take it slow with him. We have Tom Compton and even Harrison who can play both guard spots or back up center.

The condition is if he makes the 53 man roster, which you have to love in my opinion. Sounds like a guy who can compete in camp and if healthy can push your depth guys. If not, simply cut and move on.

Basically depth for your depth players.

Damn straight...this board would be going ape sh*t if Macc traded for a guy when the first report was he was released and placed on waivers.

Apparently a couple of teams inquired about a trade— might not have made it to waivers.

For a conditional 7th? Absolutely fine with it. That's nothing. And I love how much Douglas is putting emphasis on the OL.

He said in one of the Sirius interviews that OL is far an way the highest priority not just for the current Jets team but in general. MacCoffee literally said several times he did not believe the OL was that important, did not like drafting for it and a good OL could be made with midrange FA signings. He was SOOOOOOooooooooooo clueless.

assuming Lewis is healthy - there's several ways to see this

1) they will get 16 games between Lewis and Osemele at LG together, but not apart (i.e. they didn't believe in Ko's durability over the whole season)

2) Brian Winters' job is threatened at RG (he's simply not the bulky player the new coaches prefer)

3) Brandon Shell's job is threatened at RT (long shot, Lewis is more of a guard)

4) Tom Compton isn't looking great cause these are essentially the same guy (could be... Minny didn't seem too scared to lose him)

5) Alex Lewis is the 6th guy coming off the bench (and that's fine)

we won't really know what is real until we see them in pads

Jets trade for Ravens guard Alex Lewis as offensive-line rebuild continues ahead of preseason opener

The New York Jets continue to add to their offensive front on Monday

The New York Jets are continuing to add to their offensive front, as it was reported on Monday that they have traded for former Baltimore Ravens offensive guard Alex Lewis.

According to Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News, the Jets gave up a conditional seventh-round pick in 2020 for Lewis, who was about to be placed on waivers. The Jets anticipated that Lewis would draw interest on the open market, which is why they quickly decided to give the Ravens something in return for him.

Lewis was drafted by Baltimore in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He started his college football career at the University of Colorado, where he played offensive tackle, guard and even some blocking tight end. After two seasons, he decided to transfer to Nebraska, where he started at left tackle.

Once in the NFL, Lewis was moved inside to guard and started in eight contests in his rookie season. The following preseason, Lewis suffered a shoulder injury which forced him to miss the entirety of 2017. Last year, Lewis played and started in 10 games for the Ravens.

This is just the latest move the Jets have made this offseason to bolster the offensive line. Last week, head coach Adam Gase was able to lure former Carolina Panther Ryan Kalil out of retirement to be their starting center. Kalil has made five Pro Bowls during his 12-year NFL career, and is a big get for Sam Darnold and Co. Earlier this offseason, the Jets made a trade for guard Kelechi Osemele as well, meaning the entire interior of their line could be comprised of offseason acquisitions should Lewis win a starting role.

Darnold spent much of his rookie season trying to escape pressure -- something that needs to be fixed if he's going to develop into the star many are hoping he is. He threw for 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2018, but showed flashes that proved he was worth a No. 3 overall pick.

With a better offensive line, better receiving options and Le'Veon Bell in the backfield, the Jets have high hopes for this offense in 2019.

Jets are 3 in waiver order, why trade for him? Unless Douglas knows Arizona or sf wanted him too?

JD made the right move here. No way do you give up that high a waiver slot before teams begin to really start cutting players.

As has already been stated, giving up a 7th rounder for a guy who, at worst, will provide OL depth, and at best, can beat out Winters.

Source: Ravens trade OG Lewis to Jets for pick

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Continuing to address their offensive-line deficiencies, the New York Jets acquired guard Alex Lewis from the Baltimore Ravens for a 2020 conditional seventh-round pick, a source said.

Lewis announced Monday morning that he was being released by the Ravens, but they found a taker before placing him on waivers.

The Jets, who have the No. 3 waiver priority (based on last season's record), evidently felt there was a chance he'd be claimed by Arizona Cardinals or San Francisco 49ers. Lewis, who has one year remaining on his contract, is due to make $2 million in 2019. He projects as a backup for the Jets.

This was the second offensive-line move in four days by the Jets, who lured former Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil out of retirement.

Lewis, a 2016 fourth-round pick by the Ravens who started 10 games last season, was expected to compete at left guard. He struggled to stay healthy throughout his career (missing a total of 28 games over three seasons) and began training camp on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Two days after passing his physical, Lewis posted on Instagram that he was longer in the Ravens' plans.

Lewis didn't endear himself to the Ravens this offseason when he chose to rehab his shoulder away from the team.

Asked 10 days ago about Lewis, coach John Harbaugh said he looked strong and was moving well. Harbaugh anticipated Lewis returning in early August but added, "We were given a date by his doctor."

That leaves the Ravens' left guard spot even more up in the air. Options include: Jermaine Eluemunor, who failed his conditioning test to start camp after working with the starters in the spring; Ben Powers, a rookie fourth-round pick; and James Hurst, who finished last season as the starting left guard but has primarily worked at tackle this year.

Lewis becomes the Ravens' second onetime draft pick the team has moved on from in a week. On Wednesday, Baltimore released former fifth-round pick Jordan Lasley two days after he was involved in a fight and then threw a ball into a drainage pond.

Can’t we release this guy to avoid giving up the 7th rounder and picking him up? **** the Saints.

Suppose they could, but it would be very stupid.  You would make an enemy out of the Ravens, who the Jets should have a good relationship with at the moment.

We stay at 3 until week 3.

I don’t mind the move by the way.

This isn't fantasy.  they can use that waiver position as many times as they want until early in the season.  They were afraid of multi team  interest, and losing him.  Still a good deal

Thats my thinking too.

Im sure Dougie has his eye on a few more potential waiver claims he would rather use our 3rd spot on.

Douglas came to the right place, lol.

Forget the 6 year 18 million dollar deal, some of you guys are so blinded by Macc hate you fall head over heels with every move he makes. Hell, you’re even falling in love with moves he hasn’t made yet but you’re thinking he will.

Two things I’ll say about this move. First, I’m okay with the player. Seems like he’s certainly worth a shot. Second. No matter how you guys want to spin this, if Macc traded for a guy who was/was going to be released, you’d be killing him for giving up the draft pick and not simply getting him off the waiver wire.

Its good to be Joe Douglas right now....

I like the aggressiveness.  No idea if this guy is an upgrade over the Qvale/Comptons of the world.  Although he will be an upgraade over Qvale if his injury lingers.  But Douglas saw a guy he wanted and went and got him, without risking losing him to the waiver process.
