Popular Post KRL
Had to be in the office early so I haven't reviewed the tape yet so here's a few things off the top of my head: - The #1 offense showed what they've been doing in camp. No huddle, uptempo pace allowed Sam Darnold and the offense to get rolling quickly. Darnold's ability to improvise really fits a no huddle offense, Adam Gase needs to implement it on a regular basis - If you blinked you missed the #1 defense. They stuffed the run and allowed a 3 yard pass completion - The OLines provided a solid pocket for all the QB's. But there wasn't much push in the run game after the starters went out - Trevor Siemian was an efficient "dink & dunker" but really didn't do much. Nice play call by Gase on his TD pass to Elijah McGuire, faking the entire offense to the left and then spinning back "naked" to the right was creative. Fits perfectly with what Darnold can do, don't be shocked to see that in the regular season - Good to see Gase be aggressive at the end of the half with three timeouts (shocking). In addition he had an excellent pass interference challenge that picked up 30+ yards - After three years Davis Webb should be better, too many easy passes missed and throwing a "Sanchez pick 6" isn't going to win a job. Too inaccurate and mistake prone for my liking - Greg Dortch and Josh Bellamy had good games as WR's. Add in their special teams ability and they should be leaders for the #4 and #5 WR spots. Dortch looks like a natural punt returner and that 30+ yarder was nice to see - Chandler Catanzaro was awful, there should be another kicker in camp before they have their next practice. That is all - Trenton Cannon is going to have a hard time making the team as an RB. But his ability as a gunner on special teams may save him - Bad technique by Derrick Jones on the long completion he gave up. He reached and missed jamming the WR at the line and was beat - Active game by Frankie Luvu as he was all over the field making tackles and caused a fumble during his reps - Foley Fatukasi finally got some playing time and stuffed the run during his reps. In addition he also showed a good ability to "time the snap" and be in the center's lap - Parry Nickerson, close isn't good enough when playing CB. He was "close" to knocking away a couple of balls that turned into completions. And he was "close" to tackling the WR on that slant that turned into a TD. But when you're fighting to make the team that's not good enough 15 2 2

Augustiniak
i agree on dortch, he looks like a natural returning punts, and he's a guy they can scheme for gadget plays and bubble screens. at this point i can see both cannon and mcguire being cut when better rbs get cut from other teams. they were both very late round picks and that's what happens most of the time. cannon has speed but not really the elusiveness you want in someone in that role. he's not an elusive 3rd down back, i'd still rather have powell. 4

And give Dortch full return duties 6

That's a REALLY bad sign for Mcguire. McGuire is just bad and can't help in special teams. He pitter patters when a hole opens up and looked clumsy on his TD catch. I think he is as good as gone. Cannon may not be an every down back but like you said he brings value on special teams. 2

Plus he adds some return skill (in case of injury) and I rank him above Mcguire as a runner....which isn't saying much. The reality is that with Bell/Ty and I guess Powell, any other RB on the roster better help in special teams.
Nixhead
McGuire's runs: 2 yd 2 yd 1 yd 1 yd 3yd 2 yd 2yd. At least he got that 3 yarder in there or his stats would look pretty bad!

Which I’m guessing is the reason they started him as the kick returner . But at some point he is gonna have to make some plays.
doublel9
Don't see McGuire or Burnett sticking, sad cuz both legit NFL depth players and fan favs. Fatukasi>Shepard but one loses out on crowded DL Pray for decent waived DB and S. I personally wouldn’t cut Powell for either guy .

rammagen
I wanted more from Toth, Smith was just as bad on the oline ...really got pushed around and heard his name on a few penalties as well. Webb looked bad the team looked better with Faulk running the offense

Warfish
Kicker was horrible. Should be outright cut frankly. RB's were very meh. None impressed me. Siemian was not great, we've seen that kind of limited-talent QB before, don;t want to see any more of it tbqh. Webb, ugh. As bad as folks here always said, too bad. At least it's the backup QB's who mostly suck, not the starter for a change! I'll leave the #4/#5 WR debate to others, it's already way to HYPE in some view for my tastes. Starters looked good, at least the ones we saw, but so little time it's mostly irrelevant. As expected, our depth....is not good. At all. Pray to the God of injuries, we're gonna need it. On to PS Game #2.

Peace Frog
I’ve been hoping that McGuire becomes the type of player he was in college and save for a few really nice plays he just hasn’t been that good. I think I’m ready to throw my towel in on him. Maybe if he goes off for 70 APY next week I’ll keep it in my pocket but I just don’t see it. I think I got my hopes up for little or no reason. Having said that, Cannon has never impressed me as a runner. No instincts. Speed isn’t translated into the field.

ChuckkieB
My very casual observations - all of the RB's were unimpressive, our CB's were terrible, and we need to find a new kicker asap. 4
UntouchableCrew
Nice observations. The single biggest thing that stood out is that our starters looked good in very limited action but we have very limited depth pretty much across the board. O-line depth, skill position depth, QB depth, secondary depth, etc. Pretty disappointed in Nathan Shepherd and Parry Nickerson. Was hoping they'd be better contributors at this point.

Popular Post sourceworx
Don't disagree with anything KRL posted. - Webb may have played himself off of the roster yesterday. Falk on the other hand put himself in play for the backup spot IMO. Personally I like his potential better than Siemien. - I'm really looking forward to seeing Bell in the backfield. Montgomery was OK, but the RB quality of play fell off a cliff once he was taken out. McGuire and Cannon both suck. - Nathan Shepherd has become the sequel to Lorenzo Mauldin. A nice feel-good story during the draft who turns out to be a major disappointment. - I loved what I saw from Brandon Copeland and Frankie Luvu. As awful as Mac was at drafting, he managed to find decent players whenever he went dumpster-diving. - We need a new kicker in a bad way.

nycdan
Minor point to keep in mind regarding the offense is that Kalil wasn't playing. When he's in, the OL will hopefully perform better as a whole, which should improve run-blocking as well as pass-protection. Also, Bell will be getting most of the touches and Powell most of what's left and neither played last night so RB performance as a whole will be VERY different soon.
