The Polite Question. What’s the answer?

Williams said he is working hard and coming along nicely and was elevated to the second team as a result.  I didnt see the game so cant comment but they make decisions based on more than the pre season games.

He looked so, so bad. No burst at all, slow, chubby, and non-competitive. If he was a UDFA, he’d be gone in the next round of cuts

Had nothing to do with him.  No one is cutting a 3rd in his first year unless he's Mental problem or a total waste.

He may very well be a mental case and a total waste, though. His Combine was a cry for help.

The good news is, you still have a couple of more weeks to make the decision and it's not crazy to think a player who slowly made progress in practice will also slowly make progress on the playing field.  Polite took 3 years to develop in college, it's not a surprise he didnt dominate his 2nd preseason game.   Pass rusher is one of if not the toughest transition in the NFL, very few great pass rushers had incredible rookie seasons.  The only ones that do, typically go top 3 overall.

I think he makes the 53 man roster.  He was a 3rd round pick and I'm sure the coaches want to see if they can tap into what he was at Florida.  While many here have written him off, I'm sure they're not that emotional.  Whether that's a conditioning, weight, technique issue, who knows but if they find it, he's the best pass rusher on the team.  Not saying much, but it's probably what keeps him on the 53 but deactivated until he shows something.

Wow, two weeks ago you were dunking on Polite haters after he beat someone named Eric Smith for a sack in practice and now you're back to saying, "hey, he has a few weeks to show a pulse, you guys." What a spineless #walkback from you.

2 exhibition games and people want to cut this guy already

I think they want to cut this guy because he tested horribly and he looks like a guy who tested horribly.

The pro-Polite people are clinging to this idea that he’s actually a good athlete underneath all that fat and he’s still fat six months later and he looks like he’s running with sandbags for feet, but it’s the people pointing to the facts that are crazy.

I’m not “pro” Polite.

I just think it’s silly to cut a 21 year old 3rd round pick before he, you know, turns 22.

The draft capital has, rightly or wrongly, already been spent. Let’s see if he has a coupon in his pocket.

Plenty of back end roster guys we can sneak onto the practice squad. He’s not preventing a star at number 53 from making the roster.

I get what you’re saying, but they’re in a bind because you can’t keep a backup OLB who isn’t going to contribute on special teams, and if Polite is just that slow or out of shape, he isn’t helping you on specials. There are back-end roster guys in every camp, every year who flash as a pass rusher who never get a sniff because those roster spots are for maniacs who block on kick and punt returns. Can Polite do that? Will he? That’s how he’s keeping a job right now, because it doesn’t appear that he’s ready to contribute as a rotational specialist. Some of his pass-rush attempts on Thursday were comically pathetic, and those were against dudes who will never see the field in a regular season game.

Other than there are no numbers against him either.

Less than one game worth of playing time and it's a long shot that he becomes a viable player.

You can not make it up.

But those metrics charts that @T0mShane keeps trotting out don’t mean much of anything.

He keeps posting Jamal’s crappy “metrics” and in 2 years he’s got 200 career tackles, a whole bunch of top 5 stats for a whole bunch of categories and was f*cking All Pro his second year.

But let’s go look at a piece of paper and make a final determination.

Because it’s predestined.

Those metrics are highly predictive for pass rushers in particular. I throw out Jamal’s sh*tty numbers just for fun.

How can a third round pick in his first camp be a big concern when we have:

  1. new coach
  2. new gm
  3. Sam going into his second year
  4. New offense with big play ability
  5. New defense

Is it really time to start getting concerned about a guy who been on the job a couple of months? This isn't Gholston territory.

Nah, but it’s a pleasant enough, consequence-free debate that helps to pass the time during the dog days of camp. The alternative is continuing to out joewilly12 as a male sex pest.

Winovich just made a tackle on punt coverage and drew a holding call on a pass rush the next play, then destroys the RT for a sack two plays later.

@TomShane Can you pull up those numbers too show why this post is so far off of the mark. TIA.

It’s not really worth it trying to convince a guy that thinks a 4.6/40 by a 250+ pound guy is in the same universe as running a 5.01/40.  It’s not even a critical metric, compared to three-cone, vert, and broad jump. But, alas

Jets fans: guys, it takes time to shake off baby fat, heal a debilitating hamstring injury, and to learn how to rush the passer.

I said they didn't perform as well as expected, but put up better numbers than Polite. Im disregarding the metrics with regards to Polite. As i said in my last post to RobR, the test numbers, and the game tape are at complete odds with each other.

I wouldn’t say they’re at complete odds, but I’ll agree with you that he looks more athletic in his highlights. I don’t think he can play at 240+ pounds, and I think his best path is to take a few months and get into shape at 235-ish. Either he’s incredibly lazy or he’s getting some incredibly bad advice.

Winovich is an enormous douchebag though.  Enormous.  So at least that offsets some of the sting.

Is he that bad? I know he had that trash talk week with Michigan State, but was there other stuff?

That's my belief. That bad advice cost him big bucks, no question about it. Never heard anything about him being lazy in college, or from Gregg Williams.

This is what his DC in college said about him: that he’s talented but has some issues that are going to be revealed if he came out early. Given that they’re issues that may have been resolved with another year in school, it’s likely Grantham is referring to immaturity, which was well on display throughout the draft process. Serious prospects don’t show up to the Combine fat and belligerent, then blame others for the fatness.

“I had DeMarcus Ware and I had Justin Houston and then really Jachai was next as far as twitch, as far as initial burst off the ball,” Grantham said. “But there’s other factors that go into playing that position, and you get a guy that’s a first-round talent that everybody’s gonna evaluate, and they’ve just got to make a decision on where they feel comfortable taking him relevant to everything that’s happened before.”

if only there had been a way to see this coming

He probably doesn't run a 4.59/40 with a 6.94 3c and a 4.11 shuttle if his trainer told him to get really fat, though, so you can't blame Macccc

Also, and not saying this to defend Polite because I'm not defending him but all of Winovich PT is coming against backups no?

I flipped over mid-2nd quarter thinking it would be amusing if Winovich did anything and then he made like six plays by himself over the next four minutes and I started eating ice cream.

ANd once again we know this.  We also know he had a hammy.

As I said, if you actually believe he runs a 4.84 40 you stick with this.  If you think they felt the poor showing was because of the hammy and they looked at his production at Fl time will tell who was right.

But hey, you know.  You saw the numbers and are convinced.

So really, i understand, we dont know for sure so lets just cut him now.  Makes perfect sense.  No one seems to get what we're discussing.  no one has said that they think he'll work out or will be a star.  Just want to wait until he proves what he is or isnt.

I mean, he was slow as sh*t in March, then he was slow as sh*t in April, and he looks to be slow as sh*t in mid-August. It is what it is. I also forgot he only benched 225 14 times, to boot. He just sounds like a jelly-roll-ass fatboy with no work ethic.
