Cimini-Polite on roster bubble?

You should read all the posts and not just the ones you agree with.  Plenty people think this is a playoff team.

Pretty sure you’re the only remaining Macc supporter. Those who think we’ll make the playoffs feel that way because of the change in HC, not the work of our previous GM with a 24-40 record.

Not a Mac supporter but if we make the playoffs this year he should get a due amount of credit.

Jets’ young linebackers have a chance to save the pass rush

Jachai Polite’s summer-long education includes facing new challenges and embracing a new mindset. The Jets’ third-round rookie outside linebacker has been working with the second- and third-team defenses with the hope that he’ll be able to carve out a role this season.

Gang Green really needs an edge pass-rusher with veteran Brandon Copeland suspended for the first four games due to a PED violation.

“We got pretty good depth there,” Adam Gase said Thursday. “When you lose veteran players that have played good football and done things right over their career, any time those guys aren’t there, that hurts us.”

Although it’s unfair to expect miracles from Polite, who consistently created havoc in the SEC last year, there’s been steady improvement.

“There’s more attention to detail,” outside linebackers coach Joe Vitt said. “There’s a better intent when he goes on the practice field every day. He’s doing a better job of getting lined up and finishing plays… It’s a big adjustment for anybody coming from college to pros. It’s a big adjustment for him. He’s working through it. He’s working hard.”

Polite was a terror with 11 sacks, 17 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles in his final season at Florida, but it’s an entirely different ballgame now. Although he’s impressed with his football I.Q., he needs to play with a greater sense of urgency.

“He is pushing himself hard,” defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said. “He's had a lot of different positions he's doing, but he's taking the next step. It’s been a shock for him to see how everybody at this level can play. He's not going against somebody that doesn't get a chance at the NFL. Everybody here can play. He's done well.”

The Jets grabbed Polite after his slid to the third-round after an unimpressive offseason that included a hamstring injury and forgettable pre-draft interviews. His talent is obvious though. Polite was one of two players in the country with at least 10 sacks and five forced fumbles last year. His 41 total pressure and 33 stops gave the Jets a window into what he could become for them.

The goal now, however, is to give Polite — who has four tackles in 66 snaps in the preseason — a portion of Williams’ playbook to gradually get him involved.

“That’s kind of what we’re doing right now,” Vitt said. “We’re learning what he’s doing best. We’re learning what he can retain and what he can execute best. That’s what we’re accentuating right now. So that’s exactly what we’re trying to do.”

Polite isn’t the only young outside linebacker with a chance to contribute. Gang Green has given first-team opportunities in practice to Tarell Basham, Frankie Luvu and Harvey Langi, who practiced with the starters Thursday after missing a couple weeks with a knee injury.

“I think that whole outside linebacker group is really showing some good stuff,” Gase said. “They’re playing through the whistle. They’re attacking the quarterback. They’re doing a good job setting the edge in the run game. They’re playing the position the way we want. It feels like it’s deep.”

Basham, a former third-round pick by the Colts, and Luvu have come on strong lately. Basham had three quarterback hits and Luvu added four tackles, one TFL and a quarterback hit in the second preseason game against the Falcons last week.

“I didn’t know a lot about Basham before I got here,” Vitt said. “He’s an ascending player. He’s getting better every day. He’s got pass rush ability. He’s one of those rare guys who’s got some strength. He’s got twitch and bounce. He can redirect. We’re all pleasantly surprised with some of his pass coverage skills. He’s detail-oriented. He’s great in meetings. He takes great notes.”

The Jets will give Langi more opportunities to utilize his speed and ball pursuit before his knee injury. Luvu, who played nearly 40 percent of the defensive snaps last season as an undrafted rookie, has started to gain some steam.

“We’re starting to see him behind the line of scrimmage now instead on the ball setting an edge,” Vitt said. “He’s got balance, he’s got twitch, he’s got range. A little bit bigger. Frankie is a little bit sturdier on the edge than Harvey (Langi). Harvey’s got more twitch range and downfield speed.”

All the linebackers are learning multiple positions in Williams’ scheme.

“They’re all getting cross trained,” Vitt said. They have to…It’s a long season.”

The Jets need some of these young players on the edge to contribute.

Don't forget the additions via FA? Sure. Mac sucks. I get it. But this team had some decent pieces in place now, so it's not a stretch to think that with good coaching they could possibly steal the last wild card. I don't think so myself. But it's not a stretch especially when you consider their cupcake schedule.

Clowney is lazy and sucks... Josh Allen may be great but qw is going to be a terror that releases Leo and Anderson for more pressure... We have not seen the full squad yet and the plays qw are in he looks real good.

5 years from now we will not regret taking Q when we had the chance. I look at Josh Allen and I see Vic Beasley.

Apparently Winovich has been great so far and the Pats also have an undrafted rookie WR (Jakobi Meyers) that is supposedly looking like a steal.

Just terrible to hear that.  But not unexpected.

That Maccagnan was just sooo bad it’s virtually probably difficult to be that bad if you tried.

But it’s in the past.  If not for Maccagnan there is no Darnold and without Darnold there is no Joe Douglas (probably even be saying that about Adam Gase too)

Cimini is a master troll and he knows exactly how to rile you guys up. Polite is a lock for the roster.. Whether he is good or not, who knows. But lol at you guys buying into this nonsense.

The day before he was fired, Maccagnan was considered even more of a lock to be the Jets GM through the end of 2019.

If the Jets trade for a must-start edge rusher, Polite shows no improvement for the balance of preseason, and he doesn't show any real value over others on specials either, yes his roster spot could be in jeopardy.

He's likely to make the roster, but he's not a lock just because he was just drafted this year. Quinnen Williams is a lock.

Thanks for that tip.
