Go with Parkey. Good kicker before the playoff game. He was released for having the audacity to talk about the missed kick on TV. They found it disrespectful and cut him.

Thats all dead and gone. Get him in here if he can kick.

Agree Parkey is an upgrade here.

NFL roster cuts: How can Jets fix kicker issue? 5 best options beyond Taylor Bertolet

For the second time in a few weeks, the Jets have a kicker problem.

First, it was Chandler Catanzaro. He struggled mightily to start training camp, following a bad 2018. That pushed him into retirement.

Now, Taylor Bertolet is the issue. Head coach Adam Gase gave him a vote of confidence, despite a 2-for-5 performance, after Thursday night’s preseason finale. But Bertolet went 5-for-8 on field goals and 2-for-5 on PATs this summer. That’s not nearly good enough.

The fact of the matter is the former general manager Mike Maccagnan saddled the Jets with this issue by refusing to pay Jason Myers, who made the Pro Bowl with the team last year. Now he’s making $5.5 million and going 7-for-8 for the Seahawks, instead.

“You get a good kicker in this day and age, you better keep him,” longtime NFL special teams coach Mike Westhoff said. “You need it. It’s such an important part. The Jets made a strategic error and really screwed it up.”

Now, it’s time to fix that error. A handful of kickers already have or are expected to hit the market this weekend, as teams trim their rosters to 53 players. Plus, there’s some veterans floating around in free agency, too.

Here are five kickers who the Jets could – and should – target this weekend as upgrades to Bertolet:

1. Elliott Fry - Ravens

The Ravens have been churning out extra kickers this summer. For the Jets’ sake, hopefully Fry would turn out better than Kaare Vedvik, who the Ravens shipped to the Vikings in exchange for a fifth-round pick. He’s since bombed. But Fry, despite being released Friday, is on the uptick. He just was never going to unseat Justin Tucker in Baltimore, who is one of the league’s best. He spent most of training camp trying to win the Bears’ job, then lost out to Eddy Piniero. But he landed with Baltimore and went 2-for-2 on FGs and 2-for-2 on PATs in the preseason finale – including a 48-yard make. He’s a young guy, too, at age 24. Word on the street is that Jets GM Joe Douglas would prefer a younger talent.

2. Chase McLaughlin - Bills

Speaking of young kickers, McLaughlin is an undrafted rookie. He just graduated from Illinois, now he’s making the NFL transition. He went 4-for-6 on FGs of 50-plus yards as a senior. He went 5-for-5 on PATs and 3-for-3 on FGs, including a 54-yarder, this preseason. And the Bills just locked up Steven Hauschka long term, so McLaughlin will definitely be available via waivers soon enough.

3. Kai Forbath - Jaguars

Forbath was released in February and hasn’t landed anywhere since. That’s surprising, considering he hit 84 percent of his field goals in 2017, when he last played a full season. That’s not a bad number. He went 32-for-38 with a long of 53. PATs were a bit shaky, but 34-for-39 isn’t terrible. He was mostly a backup for the Jaguars last year, but kicked in three games and went 4-for-5 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PATs. So clearly he can still do this a bit. He’s 31, but that’s not even close to old by kicker standards.

4. Cody Parkey - Bears

Yes, Parkey is synonymous with the double doink. But infamy aside, he still may be a better option than Bertolet, who has never kicked in an NFL game. Parkey is just one year older, at 27, and has a Pro Bowl pedigree; he made the game in 2014. He definitely had a rough year for the Bears, going 23-for-30 (76.7 percent). But he also made 93.3 percent of PATs, so at least you know he’s solid on those. The bet would be that Parkey reverts to his old self – or at least moves closer to the mean. He’s a career 83.9 percent kicker on field goals.

5. Tristan Vizcaino - Bengals

The 23-year-old didn’t exactly light it up this summer. He went 3-for-6 on field goals in his two preseason games, though he did convert both his PATs. His age is a potential plus, though. And he was briefly with the Jets during the spring of 2018, so he could theoretically get comfortable in Florham Park quickly. Vizcaino spent most of his college years as a punter, but has a big leg. He made a 61-yard kick during that stint with the Jets.

Forbath or Parkey on that list

Sign one of them already

I think they’ll sign a kicker and not go with Bertolet. But his 2-5 on Thursday night those 3 missed kicks were 49 and in the mid to high 50’s. He had the distance on all of them but wasn’t accurate. This team needs an accurate kicker but how do they get one.

Bertolet has no chance to make this team.  Even if he hit those fgs im not sure we still wouldnt have tried to upgrade.  More cuts coming so lets what what kickers are let go.

Koo was 3 of 6 for the Rams, 1 of 4 from 40-49 yards.  Shlt

Parkey was really good until a year ago.

Bad games happen to good kickers.  Jets have a history of picking up kickers who epically choked then came here and did well

Thats his career, not a bad game.

The two that were good were 20-29 yards.

His long is only 41.

Nothing about him says he doesnt suck.  Nothing even hints at hes a good kicker

Career 84% fg percentage kicking in the elements in Philly, Chicago and Cleveland

He missed a big fg in playoff game otherwise he’s still the bears kicker

You mean aside from his pro bowl season? Aside from THAT, his career has sucked?

OK.
