Bettis Holds Key To Detroit

City Picks Its Most Valuable Player

POSTED: 11:03 am EST February 1, 2006

The city of Detroit celebrated Super Bowl XL by choosing its Most Valuable Player Tuesday, Local 4 reported.

Jerome Bettis, of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was honored with a key to the city in a ceremony held at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.

Bettis, a Detroit native, said he was pleased with the award.

"The world gets an opportunity to see what Detroit is all about, and I am so proud to be an ambassador for the city for this week," said Bettis.

The staff of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said that in addition to the key to the city, Bettis will also receive a gift basket and a book about Detroit. Detroit City Council members also awarded Bettis the Spirit of Detroit pin.

When Super Bowl XL is over, Bettis will stay involved with the city by working with a major housing development on the Detroit River at the old Uniroyal site, according to the station's reports.

Years before Saddam Hussein became an enemy to the United States, he was reportedly seen as a friend and made an honorary Detroit citizen. In 1980 when Saddam Hussein was on good terms with America, he was quite the giver. Hussein donated money to help several churches in the motor city, Detroit.

There are pictures of a meeting between a Detroit priest and Saddam Hussein when he accepted the donation.

Father Jacob Yasso of the Sacred Heart Chaldean Church says, "He said, 'We hear you have a debt on your church'. I said, 'Yes Mr. President'. He said, 'How much?'. I said '$170,000'. He said, 'I'll pay it off for you'."

Father Yasso returned the favor at that same meeting 23 years ago. He gave Hussein a key to the city of Detroit making him an honorary citizen.
