Gruden: Plan is for Brown to play Monday night

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Antonio Brown will suit up and play for the Oakland Raiders in their season opener against the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

"That's the plan," coach Jon Gruden said before Friday's practice. "That's the plan, yes."

"Antonio is back today," Gruden said. "We're really excited about that. Ready to move on. He's had a lot of, obviously, time to think about things. We're happy to have him back and I know Raider Nation is excited about that, too."

And while Brown was not on the field during the stretch period, he emerged from the weight room to join the team for individual workouts, after the media viewing window had closed.

Earlier Friday, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson that Brown issued "an emotional apology" during a team meeting on Friday morning.

That apology came on the heels of a confrontation with general manager Mike Mayock on Wednesday, in which disparaging language was used by Brown, a source told Anderson.

On Wednesday, Brown initiated a discussion with Mayock midway through practice, resulting in the confrontation that had sparked the team's impasse with the player, according to a team source.

A Raiders source confirmed Brown was unhappy with the fine levied by the team and, seeing Mayock watching practice, walked over and initiated an exchange with the GM. The Raiders source confirmed information from another league source who said Brown called Mayock a "cracker" and unleashed a barrage of "cuss words" during the altercation.

The team source told Anderson that Mayock tried to keep his cool and defuse the situation.

"[Mayock] was like, 'I'm cool, I understand your displeasure,'" the source said. "[Mayock] sort of just like ... just walked away because he saw it escalate."

The source stressed the confrontation escalated quickly, but it never appeared to be getting physical, and players, including linebacker Vontaze Burfict, attempted to separate Brown from the situation in order to calm him down.

On Friday, Brown issued the apology with team captains "standing with him" and that the team "treated him like a family member" afterward, the source told Anderson.

The source said it appeared Brown had read the letter about the fine -- which he posted on Instagram -- before practice and was angry to begin with.

In the letter, Mayock informed Brown that he was being fined $13,950 for missing a walk-through on Aug. 22, an unexcused absence. The letter also mentioned the team previously had fined Brown $40,000 for missing camp on Aug. 18 -- the day the GM issued his "all-in or all-out" ultimatum to Brown.

"When he saw [Mayock on Wednesday], he was like, 'I can address it,'" the team source told Anderson.

The Raiders source said of Brown: "Nobody works as hard. Nobody loves the game as much, but [it] seems like there is something that is distracting him from his love that [he] can't control."

On Thursday, Mayock told reporters that Brown was not at the facility and would not be practicing. He did not confirm or deny that Brown will be suspended.

Brown's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Get Up! on Friday that he continues to hope there is a solution to the situation.

 

"Right now I think his relationship with Coach Gruden is good, very good," Rosenhaus said Friday. "I'm not going to get into his relationship with Mike Mayock, but I will say that we're hopeful that that will be a good one, as well. It has been in the past; it can be in the future."

Rosenhaus added: "Listen, the NFL is a workplace. And in workplace environments, not everything is perfect. Antonio is a new player on this football team and we're trying to make it a very good relationship across the board. But what is very common in a new relationship is you try to get things in a good place. And it takes time."

The news of the plan for Brown to play impacted the line at Caesars Sportsbook again. The Broncos now are 1-point favorites at Caesars; the spread had been 2 points (and pick 'em before news of a possible suspension surfaced). The total also raised a half-point to 43.

What bothers me most is that I read the last 4 pages of the suspension thread and then went ahead and clicked on this thread. I am rubbernecking this car crash called Antonio Brown.

To blame this attention whore's need to be in the spotlight is in no way related to a CTE issue. Wayne Chrebet got banged around and concussed more than most and is, and always has been a class act. 

Brown did not go from meek & mild to bombastic showboat because of a knock to the head

Mayock might have a lot of authority on who the team drafts.  He doesn't have the authority to effectively bench Antonio Brown without Gruden's approval.  

Mayock is the Dean Wormer of the Raiders. I bet they caved on the fines also and put him on double secret probation.

Speaking of crackers... I was down south recently and saw a homeless guy begging on a corner. His placard read: "Put some cheddar on this broke cracker."  I even gave him a couple of bucks for being witty.

Brown is the spoiled rotten, entitled, foul mannered brat. 

Gruden is the enabling, weak willed delusional mother who yells at teachers when the child does poorly at school and undermines all efforts to discipline her brat. 

 

Mayock is the disciplinarian Step-Father who has about had enough and is on the verge of walking out.

He threw himself under the bus by jumping into Gruden's shoes unasked...Gruden didnt say anything because he knew how it would end...Gruden left OAK because of control issues with Al Davis; when Mark Davis offered him the head coaching job you can bet Gruden got that question out of the way first.

Mayock was hired, OTOH on Gruden's recommendation. He never had more juice with the .org than Gruden. This allowed Gruden to flex his muscle without having to flex his muscle because at the end of the day, Mayock was an unemployed college scouting exec who played his evaluation of players at the Senior Bowl into a full-time gig with the NFL Network. Locker room issues were never his wheelhouse.

I just hope most here understand this was a normal thing in all of sports, but specifically football.  Difference is now media actually reports this stuff, and the crazy MF’s like Brown have social media to bring this attention to the public.

Man look at LT, and half the 86 Mets.

It's time for the circus to come to an end.   All this Bs all offseason from Antonio Brown .  ( has run down a lot of the fan base).      Well hopefully he knows one more slip up , and he might lose all that guaranteed money.   Maybe finally he ready to do his talking on the field, because I sure don't want to hear anything he has to say off the field.( enough is enough) .

This was almost the second time in two years, the Raiders lost their best player with a week to go for the start of the season.   The season can't start soon enough.
