Update: Taco is being released

The #Cowboys are still keeping the door open for a possible trade of former first-round pass-rusher Taco Charlton, but if nothing comes to fruition, they plan to move on from him, sources tell @SlaterNFL  and me. With Robert Quinn back on the roster, Taco is likely out.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

"This kid has length, power and athletic ability. Reminds me physically of Carlos Dunlap. One-year starter, which makes me question where he was before that." -- Mike Mayock

SOURCES TELL US

"Really, really talented player. You won't always see it on every play so that is going to be a coach's job to get that out of him. Rushers with his size and athleticism are hard to find and they usually go very early in the draft." -- AFC executive

BOTTOM LINE

"Inconsistent" has been the buzzword that has followed Charlton since coming to Michigan, but he began the process of shaking it during his senior season. Charlton is an ascending prospect with the size, length, athleticism and pass-rushing potential that NFL general managers dream of. What you see today might not be what you get. While his production coming out of college will be modest, he could become a substantially better player as a pro if he's committed to the weight room and willing to absorb coaching. High-impact defensive end with all-pro potential is his ceiling. His floor is solid starter.

Probably doesn't possess the traits that Joe D, Gase and GWilliams want but may be worth a waiver claim...Just use him as a designated pass rusher to start...If he doesn't show anything just waive him..

Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton is likely to be the first Wolverine taken in April's NFL Draft, but it didn't stop him from working out in front of NFL coaches and scouts during the team's Pro Day on Friday.

According to NFL.com's Gil Brandt, Charlton only helped himself in the eyes of the league with the workout.

"(Charlton) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.83 and 4.85 saeconds (almost a tenth of a second faster than what he ran at the combine), and stood on the rest of his numbers from Indianapolis," Brandt wrote on Friday. "He had a very good workout in which he was asked to drop into coverage as a linebacker. He helped himself."

NFL.com's most recent draft projections have Charlton going from San Diego (#7 overall) to Green Bay (#29), with many labeling him as a player "trending up" on many draft boards.

Great story great player but we really need to start drafting some offensive playmakers.

I wonder which vet jet gets traded or cut 1st?  Gase had no issue with dumping guys he did not like with the phins.

I thunk Leo is a real possibility before the trade deadline if Quinnen can actually play.

It would be insanely stupid to cut him. We’d lose a potential comp pick by doing that instead of letting him walk as a free agent.

Jarrett Stidham might not be the guy to takeover for Tom Brady after all.

NFL rumors: Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback signs with New England Patriots

Tennessee Titans vs. Philadelphia Eagles, August 8, 2019

Former Philadelphia Eagles QB Cody Kessler plans to sign with the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The New England Patriots have added a former Philadelphia Eaglesquarterback to their depth chart.

The undefeated AFC East squad signed quarterback Cody Kessler, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday.

A new QB in New England: Patriots are signing former Jaguars-Eagles-Browns QB Cody Kessler, per source.

Kessler was waived by the Eagles during final cuts in August. He signed with Philadelphia prior to organized team activities in May. Kessler served as the team’s third-string quarterback throughout the summer, taking reps behind Carson Wentz and Nate Sudfeld.

Kessler temporarily became the Eagles’ backup quarterback after Sudfeld suffered a wrist injury in the preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans. Unfortunately for Kessler, the promotion was short-lived. He suffered a concussion in the first quarter of the Eagles’ second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A few days later, the team signed Josh McCown, who came out of retirement to replace Sudfeld and Kessler as Wentz’s main backup.

Kessler completed 7-of-15 passes for 57 yards in three preseason games. He and rookie Clayton Thorson were both let go following the exhibition slate.

Prior to joining the Eagles, Kessler spent a season with the Jaguars. Jacksonville traded for Kessler during the 2018 offseason and he immediately became the backup to Blake Bortles. He eventually replaced Bortles as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback after the former first-round pick was benched. He led the Jaguars to a 2-2 record as a four-game starter.

He was released by the Jaguars following this year’s draft.

Kessler originally entered the league as a 2016 third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns. The University of Southern California alum has appeared in 17 games (12 starts) and produced 2,215 passing yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions during his four-year career.
