Demaryius-Thomas.jpg

Just over a week ago we compiled a list of players that the Jets might have in their crosshairs to upgrade their 53-man roster.  One free agent on that list (at that time) was wide receiver Demaryus Thomas, whom the Jets dealt for yesterday as Joe Douglas sent a 2021 6th round pick to Bill Belichick and the Patriots to acquire the veteran receiver.

Reaction to the deal from fans has ranged from curiosity as to why the Jets would give up a draft pick for an older receiver with little left in the tank, to some level of optimism given the need for depth at the position and Thomas’ familiarity with head coach Adam Gase from their days together in Denver.

Thomas, a once prolific receiver adds a true professional the huddle who has a better understanding of the nuances of the game than any other pass catcher on the roster, but will that be enough to allow him to be productive?  He spent most of the preseason as a spectator, and when he finally got on the field he was productive, but was playing against third and fourth-stringers.  Is Thomas’ ability to separate still there, or will the Jets rely on Sam Darnold to make pinpoint throws and allow the Savvy Thomas to use his smarts to beat opposing defenders?

Another lingering question is why in the world would Bill Belichick do business with the Jets?  This is the same team that exposed his for his spygate antics many years ago, and a team he hadn’t struck a single trade with in all of his years with the Patriots.  This isn’t about whether or not the Jets are a threat to the Patriots (Spoiler alert, they’re not), but why would Belichick help the Jets in any way at all?  Unless of course Thomas was available via trade and nobody else showed any interest so Belichick took what he could get?

Additionally, whose reps will Thomas take?  He’s clearly not going to displace Robby Anderson as the deep threat, and while healthy, Quincy Enunwa has more to offer in terms of explosiveness and physicality, assuming he’s truly recovered from his previous injury.  The slot is obviously a spot where Jamison Crowder will be getting all of the reps, but what about tight end?

Thomas wouldn’t be  an in-line tight end, but could there be some use as a slot receiver in four and five receiver sets?  What about some reps as an H-back?  Entirely possible with Chris Herndon unavailable for the next several weeks.  It’s also worth noting is that Quincy Enunwa has done some of his best work as an H-back and out of the slot and could be shifted back inside if Adam Gase decides he wants to keep Thomas where he’s most comfortable, which is on the boundary.

All good questions, and we’ll have to give it some time to see just what the plan is, but it shouldn’t be long before each one is met with an answer.

The comments by some of the posters in this thread, should tell everybody why the Jet's will never get respect from anyone throughout the league, the NFL fan base, and the national media. The ridiculous defense of a HC who wants to throw a wide receiver under the bus after one game, is beyond bizarre, and frankly laughable. To make matters worse, if Darnold was close to being on target, Anderson would have scored on both of those deep passes. There was nobody behind him, that would have caught him in time. The result a loss, instead of a win by double digits.

Accountability is bad?  Wasn’t that what everyone wanted from the previous regime?  He didn’t call out 1 player.  Reporters made assumptions.

According to those that look at details RA was lazy in his routes and also stumbled so that’s why it looks like Darnold overthrew him.

On Monday, Gase was ticked off with his wide receivers. He didn't name names, but he was critical of their route running in Week 1. Gase's offense -- his baby -- stunk against the Bills, and he blamed the receivers and the offensive line, shifting the onus away from quarterback Sam Darnold. He was irked by one play in particular, a Darnold overthrow to Robby Anderson that could have won the game.

Anderson stumbled as he blew past the cornerback, and the timing was thrown off. He also seemed to downshift near the end of his route; perhaps Gase felt Anderson had given up on the play. Without using Anderson's name, he questioned the fourth-year receiver.

Wishing we picked him up 2 weeks ago in FA but who knows, maybe DT wanted the Pats instead of any other team. At the time, we were still looking for a WR4 so it is a little strange it happened now. At the same time, if he can help, I don’t mind giving up a 6th round pick in 2021 draft. Seems so far that JD doesn’t mind parting away late round picks for players who he think can contribute now in a weakness area.

After watching week1 and seeing the jets opposing corners that they have to go up against, it’s going to get pretty tuff. Robby Anderson won’t get a favorable match up until week 10.(Ward, Gilmore x2, Darby, Jones, Ramsey, Howard) it’s not until the Giants game when Anderson will play a corner he should smoke in Jenkins.

Against Buffalo we desperately needed another guy who can just run an experienced route for a couple first downs. Enunwa was blanketed all game, when that happens we can’t target Crowder 17 times in one game.

Thomas is coming off an ACL and now lingering hamstring issues and could be the reason he is here in the first place, but if he can move the chains once or twice Monday night in difficult situations, maybe 3rd down or 2nd and long, then it should be a good move for the Jets. If the guy can’t even get on the field until halfway down to the season, they I will start to scratch my head a little bit on this one.

Why.....

Why would a football / Jets fan have to ask this?

He played in, knows and excelled in Gase system.

For those asking why are expecting a 100+ catch a season Thomas. He’s not that now.

This allows a professional route runner that knows Gase system to be employed into gameplans which, I would guess, allows Gase to move Enunwa around inside for favorable matchups

I think it's  pretty obvious that Thomas is going to start opposite  Anderson. Enunwa was nearly invisible on Sunday. I like Enunwa catching screen passes.

Stupid trade.

Thomas is done. Up in New England he's just a piece in the system with Brady throwing to him.

Here he's going to have to play a much larger role and he just isn't that player anymore.

Wht trade assets, even a low value asset, for a washed up piece that really isn't going to do much for you now, let alone the future.

So much for the amazing Joe and all his connections.

Let’s just keep trading building blocks and draft assets for players who have zero chance of making the roster past this season.  Sounds logical.

Thomas knows Gase's system. He fits as an outside WR puts Enunwa back in his Hybrid position. There are certainly questions I just hope he has some gas left like Brandon Marshall & gives the Jets a solid year.

I love your posts. It actually gives me hope that there are rational Jets fans. How any Jets fan can complain or even question trading for Thomas for a 2021 6th round pick is beyond me.

I get that Thomas knows the playbook and he’s a good guy with a resume but if you can’t run fast it’s over

Gase wasn't happy with the performance of the receivers, for a 2021 6th rounder he is bringing in a a player he is familiar with and feels can provide immediate help.

I don’t get it either

They just acquired Thomas for less than what they paid to bring in Nate Hairston.

At least Thomas is still capable of putting up 500 yards and 4-5 TD’s down in the red zone. Hairston is barely even going to see the field as part of a sh*t CB group unless we’re ravaged by injury. Yet it seems like everyone was fine with that move.

Jets fans - we suck and have no talent because Big Mac sucked at drafting.  You need to build through the draft like the best teams do.  Look at all the players who are no longer in the league or on the team he took.

Also Jets fans - throwing away picks for nobodies with no future on this team, no big deal.

Accountability is good. Public call outs already is a slippery slope, especially with Anderson, who's probably sensitive. Do that behind the scenes. If there was anyone to call out it was himself for letting that joke of a kicker on the field. Then playing stupid about how the situation went down was even worse. Gase playing stupid when its convenient for him, while throwing guys under the bus will get the locker room turned on him fast. We're still left questioning who's actually in charge too.

I get that but you can usually get back a 6th rounder in two years in some sort of way. It’s not the same as giving an earlier pick.

But this team hasn’t been able to build thru the draft because of failing outside of just the first round. And even sometimes then.

notice how douglass is acquiring guys at positions that mccagnan historically and brutally neglected - center and wr.

reality is this is a 2-3 yr fix, and the new guys, gase/douglass, are just trying to get the offense with functional, nfl caliber talent so darnold has a chance to develop properly.

People are bitching about targeting Crowder 17 times and being dink and dunk, but then complain a 6th round pick in TWO years was traded for a big body receiver.  There was no one on this team who was capable of running a slant route or being a red zone target.   Thomas may not move the needle that much but you can’t line up every week with the likes of Enunwa and Anderson on the outside of this offense.

Remember during the offseason when some of was saying that this WR group was severely flawed and there wasn’t enough flexibility or balance?  I remember questioning why so many diminutive receivers were being brought in and we were told, it was fine, Enunwa and Robby are here and Gase loves the short passing game.

I dont have an issue with the trade a 6th rounder in 2021 for help now not a biggie because who would they pick, would they have contributed the same level for 2 or 3 yrs. My only issue is people talking about accountability, that starts with the head coach not acting like a bi$ch when asked certain questions. want to see the difference, look at Dan Quinn's answers to the Atlanta media about his blow out loss that is accountability starting at the top

i don't understand all the hate towards robbie, he is who he is, and he's not what he's not.  likewise i don't understand the love for enunwa, who is a below average wr in most phases of the game except blocking.  hands/speed/moves are below average.  he is the weak link at wr and that's why they got DT.  the 6th round pick they gave up is meaningless, the goal right now is to give darnold a chance.  i think a lot of the reason he got hit and pressured so much vs the bills is b/c he stood back there waiting for the wrs to get open but the only guy who could do it was crowder.
