Jets claimed former Bengals DL Jordan Willis and placed WR Quincy Enunwa on IR.

 

The Jets have claimed DL Jordan Willis, who fills the roster spot for WR Quincy Enunwa, who was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury.

Willis, who was drafted by the Bengals in the third round of the 2017 draft, started 32 games (two starts) in two seasons with Cincinnati and registered 45 tackles and two sacks. The 6’4”, 270-pounder was one of the Bengals’ 11 D-lineman to make their 53-man roster and was inactive for the team’s season opener against the Seahawks before he was waived Sept. 10.

The Kansas State product racked up 113 tackles, 25.5 sacks and six forced fumbles in 38 games for the Wildcats and earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2016.

You know, I am not one to keep questioning our teams decision makers, but with the couple of various CBs with experience out there shouldn't we try to upgrade there rather than DLine. CB Roberts all but cost us the game last week wiping out a Maye INT with a holding penalty and then giving up the game winning TD. Not to mention CB Johnson playing in a different zip code off the WR giving them like a 20 yard cushion that I thought you only did on Hail Mary plays. Geez, try to at least stop the bleeding on our biggest weakness at this point.

Maybe our GM think this guy is an upgrade to our pass rush? 

Just an idea. Give him a few drafts on his own before the verdict?

He inherited a sh*t show after all

the Bengals are waiving defensive end Jordan Willis. In a corresponding move, the Bengals signed free agent linebacker LaRoy Reynolds. The Bengal have since confirmed both roster moves.

Willis, a third-year player, saw action in 32 games with the Bengals since joining the team as a third-round draft pick out of Kansas State in the 2017 NFL Draft. It’s an unfortunate end for Willis, who showed flashes of becoming a solid run defender, but his inability to generate any semblance of a pass rush made it hard to keep him on a 53-man roster that had 11 defensive lineman in Week 1.

Maybe, but he couldn't make the team because he was a horrible pass rusher and they were hoping he could at least be a good run defender.

So what you're saying is that he'll fit right in with this team.

Anyway to get something for that guy if his season continues the way it has?  I mean, they may try to extend him but probably not willing to pay the $$$ he thinks he deserves.  He might have been a nice piece to trade for a 2nd rounder this past April.

What's worse BTW, a sh$t show or a dumpster fire since we have used these analogies before on our team?. I personally like train wreck myself the best since what is worse than that.

Well, I would trade him for a starting CB at this point since Dline is not our biggest problem at this point.

STRENGTHS

 Good eyes vs. zone read; sees mesh point clearly. Quick responder once he diagnoses the action. Excellent change of direction ability to stay in the hunt. Finishes tackles, rarely allowing runners to escape grasp. Pursuit will not stop until the whistle blows. Proficient with hands. Hands are strong and control the action. Well-schooled with excellent stack-and-shed ability. Good strength in base and plays with adequate contact balance. Stays clean setting edge while spying into backfield. Uses blockers' forward lean against them, sends them tumbling forward. Arm over is a pet move that gives him early wins. Track-stance pass rusher who comes out of the blocks with decent burst to the edge. Hard worker. Productive in sacks and forced fumbles over final two seasons at KSU.

WEAKNESSES

 Straight-liner mover. Very deliberate as a pass rusher. Shows rush moves early and rarely deviates from original track. One-speed rusher lacking dynamic qualities to turn corner for tight loops. Could get flattened in the rush arc due to hip tightness. Timing of hands need work as he tends to shoot prematurely, opening himself up to counter moves. Rarely makes tackles redirect inside with sharp counters. Tackles often come at angles. Might need to move to outside linebacker on next level.

BOTTOM LINE

 Productive three-year starter who plays with desired motor from whistle to whistle. Willis is a stack-and-shed edge defender with good play strength and quality hand work at the point of attack. He will need more creativity to be an effective NFL pass rusher, but he should be able to earn a roster spot and work his way up the pecking order in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme.

As a pro, Willis could be a supporting defensive end who notches 4-8 sacks per season if he has an elite pass-rusher on the other side who helps him with single teams and funneling the quarterback to him to clean plays up.

Here is how one top scout from a pass-rush-needy team summarized Willis, "Manufactured workout warrior. Solid backup type who can earn starts, but doesn't show same explosiveness on tape to feel he is going to wreck shop versua NFL blockers. Willis is workman-like and blue collar. If he's a starter, he's along the Clark Haggans, Brian Robison, Alex Okafor, Rob Ninkovich type. Willis tested better than Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan and Derrick Morgan, but he isn't near as explosive an athlete or player on tape as those guys were coming out."

Willis would fit best in the NFL as an end in a 4-3 defense even though he is undersized for that role. Willis is a little short on length and speed to be a stand up 3-4 outside linebacker. Sources say they expect Willis to be second-day pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and five teams have told WalterFootball.com they graded Willis as a late second-round/early third-round pick.

Player Comparison: Brian Robison. Robison (6-3, 259) is almost identical in size to Willis and has carved out a good career and has been a functional contributor for the Vikings. Willis could easily turn into a similar pro.

NFL Matches: Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, New York Jets, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Washington and Tampa Bay

There are a lot of potential fits for Willis in the early rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft. In the early portion of the second round, there some possible landing spots, including with the 49ers, the Jets and the Bengals. San Francisco needs an edge rusher for its defense, and the Jets could use an edge rusher, too. Cincinnati could also be a fit for Willis. The Bengals need a rusher opposite Carlos Dunlap as Michael Johnson is a limited player.
