" Jets coach draws high praise from former Lions star Calvin Johnson " ~ ~ ~

When Calvin Johnson was still in Detroit, Shawn Jefferson asked him if he wanted to be great.

Jefferson jumped onto the scene as a wide receiver in the NFL, but he has cemented himself in the game due to his coaching resume. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Johnson, a superstar wideout during his Lions days, called Jefferson the best receivers coach “I’ve seen in the league.” In 2012, Jefferson helped Johnson break Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yards record, a testament to the former’s tutelage.

Now on the Jets’ staff, Jefferson has worked with Adam Gase since their days in Detroit. Following Johnson’s record-breaking season, however, Lions head coach Jim Schwartz decided not to renew Jefferson’s contract. “Maybe there’s egos that play [into it],” Johnson told SI. “I think that was part of it.”Jefferson’s departure in Detroit led to coaching the Tennessee Titans’ wide receiver corps. From there, Jefferson joined Gase’s staff in Miami and reunited with him in New York. Jefferson has yet to impact a Jets receiver quite like he did Johnson, though.

The Jets wide receivers will probably not be breaking any records. That’s not to say that Jefferson’s fingerprints won’t be all over the wide receiver room. The Jets are still waiting for Robby Anderson to turn into that true No. 1 wideout and if anyone is capable of taking a receiver to the next level, it’s certainly Jefferson. With the help of a future Hall of Famer in Hines Ward, Jefferson has the opportunity to leave a legacy behind with Gang Green. Not to say that Anderson will become a Hall of Famer one day like Johnson, but there is proof on Jefferson’s resume that his coaching has helped take players to new heights.

Just ask Megatron.
