The Eagles are interested in Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, but ESPN's Chris Mortensen warns Philadelphia should not overextend itself for him.

The Eagles desperately need help at cornerback, and Jalen Ramsey, among the best players at the position in the NFL, is on the trading block.

On paper, it is a marriage that makes a ton of sense, but it might not be worth what it could cost.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen warns that Philadelphia, which reportedly offered a pair of draft picks, including a first-round selection, to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Ramsey, should not overextend itself and sacrifice the future of the franchise for the present.

"I don't see (general manager) Howie Roseman giving everything away," Mortensen told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie of Philadelphia radio station 94WIP on Wednesday.

"You have to be careful," Mortensen continued. "Going forward, (quarterback) Carson Wentz is only 26, gonna be 27. And I know Jeffrey Lurie, the owner of the Eagles is very conscientious of this -- and Howie (Roseman) too -- you don't want to sit there and break down your future roster management via the salary cap and guys you need to extend internally, who are worthy of it, by being so desperate as if the window is closing on it. The window is not closing on the Philadelphia Eagles as long as Carson Wentz is healthy and playing."

The reason the Eagles could get desperate in the first place is the alarming amount of injuries they suffered in the secondary as of late.

Philadelphia lost Avonte Maddox to a neck sprain after a scary play against the Packers last week, as well as Sidney Jones to a hamstring injury in the first-half of a win over Green Bay. The Eagles already are without Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills and Cre’Von LeBlanc for at least a few more weeks.

That leaves the Eagles defense with only three healthy cornerbacks — Rasul Douglas, Craig James and Orlando Scandrick.

James has only played three defensive snaps in his NFL career and was on the practice squad only two weeks ago. Scandrick was just signed on Friday.

Ramsey would be an upgrade over the Eagles’ collection of cornerbacks even if everyone was healthy, but especially since they are not.

Will Roseman pony up the draft capital Jacksonville is looking for?

Of note, the Eagles have their own first, second, third and fourth-round picks in 2020, as well as all of their 2021 draft picks, and are projected to earn compensatory draft picks in the third and fourth-round this offseason, respectively. The fourth-round pick became the likely outcome once the Eagles released linebacker L.J. Fort on Friday.

They also gained an additional sixth-round pick with Monday’s trade of safety Johnathan Cyprien and a seventh-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for linebacker Duke Riley.
