Just read on PFT. Hip surgery out for the season. I know the Pat's brought in 3 kickers this week but everyone thought it was just due diligence on their part.

They will sign Vedvik or Bertolett and that will become their next kicker for a decade

New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.

The New England Patriots brought in free-agent kickers to workout on Wednesday morning, according to a report from ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Now it’s clear why.

The Patriots placed veteran placekicker Stephen Gostkowski on the injured reserve list, according to The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride.

Gostkowski, 35, missed four PATs and a field goal through four games this season.

It is unclear whether Gostkowski is placed on season-ending IR. At the very least, he will miss eight weeks of action. The earliest he can come back is in Week 13, when the Patriots host fellow AFC title contender Kansas City Chiefs on December 8, 2019.

This bodes well for three local teams. The Giants face the Patriots in Foxborough on Thursday Night Football next week, while the Jets host New England in Week 7. The Eagles host the Patriots in Week 11.

The struggles are a surprise given how consistent Gostkowski has been throughout his 14-year career. Prior to this year, where Gostkowski is 11-for-15 on extra points, he had missed just six out of 649 attempts. He set a NFL record with 479 consecutive extra points made during that stretch.

“Yeah, I think as a team, there’s a lot of things that we can do better, so we’re working every area to improve,” head coach Bill Belichick said when asked about the kicking struggles, per CBS Boston. “I think we can improve in all three phases of the game and within those phases there’s a lot of things we can work on there as well. We need work on everything. It’s barely October. We’ve got a long way to go.”

Gostkowski has won three Super Bowls and made four Pro Bowls with the Patriots. The two-time All-Pro selection was drafted in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Memphis.

You would HAVE TO think that after the Jets couldn't scrape up a kicker over several months and ultimately lost a Week 1 game vs. the Bills after their Kicker missed both a FG and XP, the Patriots couldn't possibly find anyone to do a decent job for them.  However....we all know they'll sign a guy who was working at Walmart on Tuesday and he'll kick a 52 yarder to win the Super Bowl for the Pats in February.

The search seems to be down to Kai Forbath and former Jet/future Ring of Honor player Mike Nugent.  Thinking back Nugent may have had the longest NFL tenure of any Jets 2nd round pick in the last few decades.

Two guys JD never even considered.

That's for sur..............wait on 2nd thought....NO

sorry, i just can't dislike the guy because he's a patsie.  he's really good at what he does and i don't think it's possible for him to cheat.  although inflation does change the way the ball is kicked.

What are the cap implications if something like this, as in putting a guy on injury reserve vs cutting him and taking a penalty?

Is there any advantage to this?

Once the season starts, he is guarenteed his contract for the year.

Putting him on IR opens a roster spot.

Strange since this has NEVER bothered me if a guy is a member of the Cheaters. Whole organization cheats from the owner to the coaches to the players. Even in Sunday's Bills game the Bills HC had to escort 2 of the Pat's coaches (1 being Belipricks son) off the field during the Bills warm ups. They were lingering way past the time they were allowed. Spying no doubt. Just a push the envelope type of organization.
