Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin Named Candidate For Redskins Head Coach Position After Firing Of Jay Gruden

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Less than 24 hours after the firing of Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden, the rumors are already surfacing as to who could be filling the position in 2020.

One name was a bit surprising, as Steelers head man Mike Tomlin is reportedly on the shortlist for the vacancy.

“In a recent conversation with someone who knows Dan Snyder well and is aware of his thoughts on potential next #Redskins head coaches that any list of candidates would include: #Steelers HC Mike Tomlin, #Bucs DC Todd Bowles, #Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy.”Tomlin just signed a two-year extension with the Steelers over the offseason. The team also has a third-year option for the longtime head coach if they choose to pursue it.

NFL Insider Jason La Canfora thinks the Redskins main objective is to get Tomlin away from the Steelers.

“I firmly believe that Dan Snyder’s primary objective in his next coaching hire will be to find a way to acquire Mike Tomlin from the Steelers. We’ll see how feasible that may be.”

Tomlin has a 126-70-1 record in his 13 years with the Steelers.

tomlin has been a good coach for the steelers but he has also benefited by having a really good qb for his whole time at hc.  what would he get at washington?  mccoy?  keenum? haskins?  is alex smith coming back?  none of these guys are franchise level yet that's what the team needs.  will bowles work out?  again it would be stupid of him to take the job if there was a good qb on the roster.  although the current group is better than he had with the jets.

He's been there going on 13 years, the Rooney's might be looking to have a new voice in the locker room.

In addition Tomlin's from the DMV area. It could be a good fit.

Good fit for who?

Imagine choosing to go from the Steelers to the Redskins. It's like going from Harvard to community college.

Both sides. Tomlin's close to home and gets a fresh start(I think the bottom's about to fall out for the Steelers with Big Ben retiring) and the Redskins get an accomplished head coach that's still reasonably young

How blessed are Steelers fans to have an organization capable enough to identify and support head coaches and general managers so well? They went from 15 years of Bill Cowher to Tomlin who is now in his 12th year. During that time we've gone from Kotite to Gase with everyone in between ?

The ship may have sailed on Cowher as a coach, but he might be a good guy to bring into the organization as a consultant in some capacity to improve it anywhere and everywhere it can be. Hopefully Douglas is a good GM but I'm sure he could learn some things from Cowher along the way.

I don't think you realize how bad of a job the Redskins job is.

Like, the Jets job is a "bad" job by NFL standards.

I would guess 99.9% of coaching candidates would choose the Jets over the Redskins. It's the worst job in the NFL by a comfortable margin. Bengals is the only other one in the conversation.
