How to create $95.5 million in cap space for 2020 to be able to sign the best OL, WR, and CB in free agency.

No more big ticket free agents. No more big ticket free agents. NO MORE.

Worst possible way to try and buiild a team. Build through draft, UDFA and mid tier free agent signings as well as waiver claims. Sit out the first few days of free agency.

Fool's gold.

"lose" free agency every year and we will be on the way to building a team with depth and versatility.

What happens when the slaves (?) you just drafted a few years ago become high priced free agents themselves, since they're all awesome? Are you allowed to sign them or do they become yucky too and you draft the new awesome players?

Obviously drafting well is the best way to build a team, but if you haven't done that, what's the alternative? Not try to compete?

You let them go and get comp draft picks.

There is no guarantee that the big ticket guys in free agency will be better than what we have. I know your argument will be that they can't be any worse and that is valid as we suck this year but they honestly can be worse plus we will have to overpay then not just cause that is how free agency works but also because no one wants to play for a team that is always terrible.

You don’t think Scherff would be an upgrade over Osemele or Winters or Castonzo better than Beachum?

Yea I mean the problem here is that players like Roberts and Enunwa are decent bargains considering you’ve already payed a good chunk of their salaries.  You won’t find comparable players at their price points.

You also won’t be able to afford three big ticket FAs unless you basement shop the entire rest of the team (20 odd players worth).  And as we’ve learned, having a glaring weakness is a far bigger problem than having a slight strength.  So someone like Myles Garrett is an upgrade over Harry Anderson, but the 5 or 6 extra sacks per year  he brings is not worth the difference between someone like Ryan Clady and replacing him with Edoga.

That ends up just face planting your entire team.

The most insane philosophy ever for a team that has drafted like garbage for a generation: when/if we finally stumble into talented players in draft, let 'em walk for 3rd rounders. That's like investing lottery winnings in more lottery tickets.

If you cut them you get no comp picks... Haha... Comp picks are for players you lose due to FA.. Robby Anderson and Leo are those players.... And the Jets are going to spend too much to get any comp picks...

Plus you don't get comp picks for players you cut.

Williamson at 8.5 Mil you keep... It's too cheap to let go. You keep cheap assessts to trade later if necessary...

Robert's at 6 Mill is not bad... You keep him too as hopefully back up

You can't cut enunwa unless he is full health unless you want to pay out the full contract

mostly agree with the projected cuts.  but what's left out is being able to replace high priced guys like leo whose contracts have run out with lower cost draftees or players.  they may need to pay more than beachum for a left tackle or kalil for a center.  we'll see.  the bottom line is they are in a good cap situation for next season.

You build your team's foundation through the draft and supplement it through FA. It's a delicate balance and that's why you need a competent guy in the GM position. That is something the Jets have not had in a while. Is Douglas it? We shall see. That's why you can't go all in FA. It's been tried by this team many times and hasn't worked. Some fans haven't learned that yet. It's a painful lesson but a needed one.

Just because we've whiffed in free agency B4 doesn't mean you stop shopping. We whiffed because Macc made a huge mistake in Trumaine Johnson (Revis Part II).

The Jets problems have always been money spent in the wrong places & for players that did not deserve the big contacts they were given. DBrick & Mangold were very good players, Winters, Wilkerson, average & totally not worth 2nd contracts.

The Mosely, Crowder, Bell trifecta in free agency was a slam dunk. Sure we overpaid Mosely but he's a f*cking STUD! You saw that vs Buffalo. As long as your highest paid players are STUDS you'll compete.

Our problem is Beachum, Kalil, Wnters, KO, Tru, Williams. DUDS, all of them! You swap out all 6 of those guys & add Byron Jones & Scherff in free agency next offseason & maybe trade for Trent Williams? Draft Jeudy?

Imagine replacing Tru with Jones, KO with Scherff, Beachum with Trent Williams, and draft Jeudy & a Center like Biadess from Wisconsin?

So that's just 2 players from free agency, Jones & Scherff + a trade (Trent Williams), and you'd still be bargain shopping at that point for another Guard, maybe another Vet WR?

Good post.  The other thing that often seems to be overlooked in FA is that it is the player's choice where he wants to go.  I always hear that we need to sign this guy or that guy in FA.  Like it is just our option.  Then it turns out one guy has no interest playing in NY, another guy wants to play for a winner, not a team likely to be coming off 4 straight 10+ loss seasons.  I wish it was as easy as saying lets free up money and sign this guy or that guy.  Unfortunately its not that simple.  The only real long term answer to a rebuild is, IMO, the draft.  It may take a bit longer, and I can understand losing patience oafter a 9th straight lost season.  But this is likely a 2 to 3 year rebuild.  Again.  Hopefully Douglas gets it right.

Brandon scherff should be target number one

He’s the only big ticket FA that I would chase.

To hell with spending $16 million a year on someone like Byron Jones. The defense is at least competent. I’d bring in an affordable, mid tier CB like Mackenzie Alexander or somebody.

And at WR, let Robby Anderson walk and go after someone like Demarcus Robinson.

Go back to back OL in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Winding up with Scherff in FA, and then a combo of Andrew Thomas or Tristan Wirfs and a center like Biadasz would be one helluva start to rebuilding the OL.

I disagree on Williamson. They are already paying Mosley huge money. Tying up that much money at the ILB position isn't a smart allocation of resources.

Hopefully Hewitt and/or Cashman develop well this season and one of them can play next to Mosley next year. Or you can draft somebody in the middle rounds like they just did with Cashman.

This is a great analysis.  Some of the cut players could find themselves staying because the Jets need players generally.

The crime here is paying Leo $14mm this year.   Getting someone to take $8mm of that this year, rolling it forward and keeping Roberts and/or Avery would make more sense to me.

I mean we could always rely on Macs homerun hitters.
