NFL roster moves: Eagles release Zach Brown after Kirk Cousins fiasco | What will they do at linebacker now? Quick thoughts

Philadelphia Eagles hold OTAs, June 3, 2019

Eagles ILB Zach Brown (51) looks on during OTAs at the NovaCare Complex in Philadelphia, Monday, June 3, 2019.

Zach Brown made headlines for the wrong reasons recently when he criticized Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins before Sunday’s Eagles-Vikings game.

He didn’t exactly back it up, struggling on Sunday against the Vikings as Cousins lit up the Eagles defense in a 38-20 loss for Philadelphia.

Now, one day later, it appears Brown is making more headlines — the Eagles released the 29-year-old linebacker on Monday.

The move comes as something of a surprise for a few reasons.

First, Brown had started all six games at linebacker for the Eagles this season, though he only managed 29 total tackles in those starts.

Second, fellow starting linebacker Nigel Bradham injured his ankle against the Vikings and his status for this week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys is unclear.

Ultimately, Brown’s bark didn’t exactly match his bite. He was uber-productive for the Washington Redskins the last two seasons before being released this offseason. The Eagles signed him to a one-year deal later in the offseason.

He wasn’t a lock to make the initial 53-man roster, but ultimately took on a larger role after Kamu Grugier-Hill suffered a knee injury in training camp. Now that Grugier-Hill is healthy and back in the linebacker rotation, apparently the Eagles didn’t feel they required Brown’s services anymore.

With Brown gone, that leaves the Eagles with Grugier-Hill, Bradham, Nathan Gerry and T.J. Edwards at linebacker.

The Eagles also released cornerback Ryan Lewis earlier on Monday, meaning they now have two open roster spots.

Where will they go from here?

Well, one spot might be taken up by cornerback Jalen Mills, who is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform List but could be activated this week in time to potentially play against the Cowboys.

Another will likely go to a linebacker.

One candidate — Paul Worrilow, who was released during training camp by the Eagles but has worked out with the team multiple teams this season.

No need. Cashman and Hewitt are good enough especially when CJ returns.

both at least 2x the player Lee was/is...

watching the game tday Cash was CLOSE to making several plays..      he's a rookie...so, who knows,

could end up being a v good pick.

and Brown??   sheesh. players need to just STFU

I think the Jets consider it based on Hewitt and McClellen’s injuries.  McClellen is probably out.  If Hewitt can’t go and Mosley is still out that leaves us with one healthy ILB.  Another option would be to bring Burgess back from the PS.

Cashman has a little bit of Zach Thomas in him. Feisty SOB.

He's a 5th round pick starting on a pretty good D who doesn't look like he's going anywhere.

Its already a good pick

Cashman, seems to improve his game every week. Like you said he was close, maybe he makes them in the future.
