Who Is To Blame ???

Recommended Posts

Most of us realize that the current head coach of the Jets is only a symptom of chronic mismanagement.

The same should be said for all the previous regimes that failed.  This Miami debacle was not set in motion when Adam Gase was hired.  The compelling date was January 18, 2000.  The day Johnson bought the team.  That was the beginning of the current affliction.

To comprehend this fully, you have to understand the wisdom it takes to succeed at upper level management.

You do not have to be an expert at all aspects of a business, but you must be able to judge which people are effective and you have to be aware of what their strong points and limitations are.  If a top level manager does not have those abilities, failure and dysfunction are inevitable.  Hiring and firing the right people are only part of the equation.  Being aware of your people’s abilities and putting them in a position to use their strengths while safeguarding them from their own deficiencies is the larger portion of successful management.

Here are a few examples to consider when evaluation how the Jets top brass have performed…

Under Eric Mangini, there was an avenue to sustained success.  Mangini's trong points were communication with the scouting department and selecting quality talent for the roster.  He also had a vision and direction for building on character.  We all remember draft pics Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, David Harris, Derrelle Revis, Dustin Keller, Chansi Stucky, Leon Washington, Brad Smith, etc.  There were also excellent free agency moves made during his tenrure.  That was only part of the overall vision.  Mangini was was also instilling a culture of discipline and order.  In the short term, he was called "no fun" and "unlikable".  That is always the case with men/women who are very ordered *UNTILL* they start producing.  In his final season, his QB wound up with a rag arm and his big DT that drove his defense wore down.  He also demonstrated what looked like a weakness for in game adjustments.  A *wise* owner/top level manager would have realized that there was a path to sustained success with Mangini. Continue with the program and allow Mangini to build a top notch roster and continue developing a culture of high character and order.  You also make sure Mangini knows he's going to be giving up control of some in-game decisions.  You get him an OC and DC that are *backstops*.  Sure, he does not want to have an OC and DC that know more ball then he does, but you are the owner and top level administrator and you have to do this for his own good.  Behind closed doors, tell him to build and run the team while he delegate some of the game to specialists.  If the Jets kept Mangini and structured the organization to his strengths, I have no doubt they would have had sustained success. The owner didn't recognize what he had and what he had to do.  He blindly reacted to pressure.

Very similar failing with Rex Ryan.

You had a coach that the players liked and respond to.  The media loved him and the fans were having a ball a with his bluster and larger than life persona.  He also called the best defense in the league.  Exotic and impossible to predict pre-snap.  Able to adjust on a dime.  You have a pile of strengths there that can be harnessed to achieve sustained success.  His big weakness...  As far as building a roster, Rex was an emotional reactionary.  Not at all effective.  Add to that, he had a lack of zeal for the other side of the ball.  Almost a contempt for offense.  Again. A *wise* top administrator would recognize what Rex is and what he is not. You can have sustained success with him by letting him continue as head coach with his player friendly and fun approach to the game while running a lights out defense.  You also make SURE he has nothing to do with building the roster.  Unfortunately, the opposite occurred.  Due to the excitement of back to back Championship game appearances, Rex was given more input and control over roster decisions. The result was a flat and talent poor roster.  The losses mounted and the fun stopped.   A wise owner would have realized how to use his assets.  You charge your GM to do their job.  You make sure they understand they type of players that are needed for Rex’s system..  Lots of DB's to drive the back end of the defense and versatile defensive lineman.  You keep Rex away from the grocery list for his own good and the good of the organization. You also tell Rex he's taking a seat when the offense is on the field.  You get him a very strong OC that understands how to run a complimentary offense and you make that his province.  Unfortunately, Johnson didn't recognize what he had and what he didn't.  He could not take advantages of people’s strengths and back them up on their weakness.  What we got was another fired coach followed by more reactionary blundering within the most backwards management structure in the league.

What makes *ANYONE* think that Gase will work out any better ??? Especially on the heels of a GM who completes the draft and then gets fired.

Look at the businesses and teams that have sustained success.  It all starts at the very top.

This Miami game was lost on January 18th, 2000

Knowledgeable fans already know all of this...

However, now it is time for fans to stat blaming themselves.  I did my part.  I dropped my season tickets.  Watching this team isn’t enjoyment. It’s torture.

Let the Jets brass know that we want to see a commitment to fixing their management structure and delivering a quality product. That does not mean another fired coach followed by another round of dysfunction.  The Jets ownership needs to hand the reins off to qualified people and then they need to say out of their way.

 A fan...

That is step one.  Giving Douglas full control and getting the hell out of the way is just as important.

Chris Johnson for not firing Mac in January. Chris Johnson for not hiring McCarthy. CJ/Mac for not letting Rhule bring in his own guys.Chris Johnson for hiring Gase. Mac for fielding a horrendous high school quality football team. Mac for neglecting the OL, even after drafting Sam Darnold. Mac for neglecting the offensive side of the football as a whole. Mac for being an inept GM and not being able to draft anyone that made an impact. Gase for not scheming properly to help protect Darnold with the subpar quality players he has to work with. Gase for not making the correct play calls to put Darnold in a good position to succeed. Partially Gase for Sam Darnolds regression. Brian Winters for having the balls to yell at a guy who he is getting killed week in and week out by being a revolving door on the OL. He fu**in sucks.

Ownership

the Johnson’s can’t make a decision without consulting someone so it’s never a comprehensive intelligent plan

the only hope we have that this cycle will change is if Douglas can pull someone from the Ravens or eagles but I’m not holding my breath

Ownership for their complete mismanagement of how they have hired the CS and GM's dating back to Idzik and Ryan.   our drafts have been absolutely disgusting.  It is so easy to blame Gase.   But good God this OL is inept.   I watch Sam call out the blitzer game in game out and this OL still misses the blitz pick up  I watch free runners every play.  I watch missed block assignments every flippin play.

I am not giving Gase a full pass but watching these games over and over again with the ALL 22 and seeing guys break open 1/2 second too late when the line needs to hold up for 3 seconds and the can't ever make it to 2.3 seconds is sad.  Not sure there is much Gase can do to help Sam at this point because once he figures out how to get that 1/2 second the opposing teams DC will figure out how to blow up that too cause this OL just can't block for SH*&

Am I wrong in saying the Jets offense could have been anchored by Deshaun Watson and Dalvin Cook? Did that fool MacCagnan actually draft 2 safeties in 2016 or 17? I remember that night. Did that fool pass on COUNTLESS better players, year after year?

I do agree that for the reasons the OPs stated, the Johnsons are a huge issue here. Their constant need to be involved in affairs of the Company for which they have no aptitude and refusal to hire qualified executives to run the football operations jobs autonomously. I can't fault them for spending money, they do, do that, it's executive management as the OP pointed out that is the main problem which trickles down to everyone else.

You can't blame Mac really.  Idzik and countless other GMs historically got fired because their expensive first round draft picks were complete busts, so Mac knew enough to read the magazines and select first round picks with very high floors.

He also was going to avoid high round picks who could potentially get into trouble.

I remember the 2017 draft quite vividly.  We all worried about Watson playing outside in New York (still could be an issue), and Mahomes coming from a Texas Tech offense.  There was not a offensive coach in the room that would say draft Mahomes or Watson and let me coach them.  Lattimore had some injury history, and there was the Milliner experience.  Dalvin Cook hung out with a bad crowd.  Joe Mixon slugged a woman once.

There was a coach who wanted to create his defense from Arizona.  So we got Darron Lee, Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye.   Adams has a very high floor.  He is a good player.  He was not going to be a bust.  Neither was Leonard Williams.   It was easy for Mac.

What I don't understand is how Mac does not just pick offensive players after taking Darnold?  We had enough DL.

The guy who shoulders most of the blame here is Mike Maccagnan. Unfortunately, he can’t be fired twice. His philosophy was that a team can somehow succeed with a patchwork offensive line, and to draft DLmen with every first pick, save for Darnold.

Gase isn’t a great HC, but the fact is years of piss poor drafting and injuries have left him very little to work with.

imo mangini was fired too soon but then people tend to forget about the chickens**t way he handled pete kendall.  and he also had schitty to work with as oc.  he might be okay as a gm, but he just doesn't relate well to the players.

Bad ownership.  What has been the one constant since January 18, 2000?  The two greatest arguments against multi-generational inherited wealth being allowed to in buy into the NFL.  Woody and Christopher Johnson, The Smiling Morons.

At this point who the Hell cares. We have lived with ad teams and bad management  for so long but this clown show has topped everything. The team is ridiculously  bad. This is how bad I think The Jets are. I am starting the Giants Def. in one of my fantasy  leagues  and the Giants D sucks.

What everyone should be asking is why there are no changes to the team. Not one player has been benched, not one asst has been demoted or fired. We just keep marching the same clown show out there week after week and our QB regressesweek after week.

I am at a loss at this point. I mean I just don't  care until somebody does something

It's supposition, but I think Mangini was cut out of the loop for his part in facilitating "cameragate".  The league took a serious PR black eye because Magnini forced that out into public view.   The league had to prevent further embarrassment and scandal by literally destroying evidence.  I still think it likely that the Pats had the Eagles Super Bowl walk through on those tapes.   What a mess that would have been if the tapes were not destroyed.
