How could 31 scouting departments be so wrong?

Lamar Jackson isn’t just good. He’s flat out dominant. Changes the way an opponent  plays defense in every way. All four of the QBs taken before him couldn’t hold his jock. Why was he so lowly rated?

For multiple reasons:

1) Many teams thought he was a RB.

2) His playing style is such that he may not have a long career.

Ravens have a monster pass rush and a solid OL. It's a very good spot for Jackson. Suspect like his backup someday soon he either becomes more of a drop back passer(which he has the arm to do)  or he takes too many hits and he gets hurt and isn't quite the same. But right now with a good OL, he's thriving.

Absurdly ugly kid who is barely intelligible when speaking. It happens.

Russel Wilson, Mahommes, Watson all were available. yet we had Geno, FITZ and our GM thought we were fine. Woody is a Schmuck. .

He is way better than vick.

He's 2 inches taller and thicker. But way better is pushing it. What he could be is a better passer than Vick ever was. But he won't get that chance if he gets clobbered and ends up like RGIII.

There is actually a thing called “quarterback face” that scouts allegedly take into account when evaluating QBs. Most QBs are objectively handsome dudes, which lends them innate confidence. It’s a dopey thing, but it’s a consideration nonetheless. And, as far as his intellect, I don’t think there’s anyone who would hear him speak for five minutes who’d be comfortable burning a high pick on a him to play QB. He scored a 13 on the Wonderlic. All that said, he seems like a nice kid and he’s obviously killing it, but drafting him and designing an offense for him was a massive leap of faith for Harbaugh and the Ravens.

They said the same thing about RG3. RG3 now is a slow bum who couldn't sell a fake hand-off if his life depended on it.

And if he takes the more traveled road of a running QB like his backup?

They’re the Super Bowl favorite right now.  How many times have the Jets ever been? Zero? People are in denial. Anyone saying it’s because of the system is a moron. He is the system. Lamar is something special. How many bad decisions does he make? Barely any. And I’m a believer in Sam and his potential. But man people are clueless when it comes to Lamar.

31 were not wrong. Quite a few viewed him as a high ceiling, low floor QB, and felt  other guys were safer picks.

Comparisons; Dan Marino was thought to be a party animal idiot, and there's no danger of Brett Favre splitting the atom. Less anything to do with race than not being in a rush to make a less than cerebral guy  your most important player.
