La Canfora on possible Pats cheating penalty

Recommended Posts

Here’s a report from CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora:

“The New England Patriots are facing steep penalties for their admitted illegal taping of the Bengals sideline last week, league sources said, which is likely to include the loss of at least one draft pick and heavy fines. There is the possibility of a suspension for a member of upper management and/or ownership as well, sources said, pending the results of the NFL’s full investigation into the matter.

“The Patriots are repeat offenders for violating the league’s game-day operations regulations in the past — twice being stripped of first-round picks for either illegally doctoring footballs or illegally taping an opponent — which will also factor into the ultimate discipline in this case, the sources said. The NFL takes these matters very seriously and has regularly taken away draft picks and used fines and suspensions for similar infractions, whether it be illegal use of cell phones on game day (Browns) or pumping in fake crowd noise (Falcons).”

Bill Simmons (Mr Patriot Fan) is trying to pass this off as "the film crew had nothing to do with the team and BB didn't know about it".  Absolutely laughable point that only the biggest Patriot homer would ever make.  It was clearly "plausible deniability" to get the film crew that supposedly wasn't hired by the team to sit there filming the Bengals' coaching staff.  The penalty this time should be absolutely massive.  Like take away their entire draft or something like that.

Even ultimate Pats apologist Tedy Bruschi was wagging the finger today on the pregame show. Sounds like all the guardrails are off for the Pats at this point, and Goodell is going to be forced to act.

So, it’s being staged just like deflategate ... but the penalty will be less.

As everyone else knows, that does not fly.

Let's say that the Patriots were not taping anything that resembled signals, they should still be fined heavily because of stupidity (based on previous transgressions). The Patriots organization (regardless of whom) authorized this. That they may have hired independent contractors to do the dirty work, does not make it any less egregious. They were operating on orders from the Pats organization.

As La Canfora states in his article, the Bengals showed the tape to their staff, so that they could see what they had taped, so they could change their signals. That lets you know the evidence is damning. That and the subcontractors asking if they can "just erase the tapes".

Problem for the Pats here is that others (the Bengals) have seen the evidence. There cannot be a cover up or a defense of unclear intent.

Draft picks and fines are meaningless, Kraft and belicheat have to get a long suspension beginning this week

Bounty gate;

MANAGEMENT

• General manager Mickey Loomis, suspended first eight regular-season games.

COACHES

• Coach Sean Payton suspended for 2012 season.

If the evidence supports there was in fact a clear violation of rules then being a repeat offender needs severe punishment. Cash fines will do nothing to deter Patriots from cheating. Other posters proposed penalties are to take away all of New England draft picks this year but I don’t believe that is enough of a deterrent. I propose that they lose draft picks in rounds one thru three for the next five years no trading in draft to move up or down to accumulate more picks no nothing. Limit their free agency spending as well. If they implement that and continue their winning ways hats off to them but I believe that will cripple any team most talented front office. Your thoughts

The condemnation of this particular act seems to be fairly universal. Particularly with the Pats having a down year and entering into a (for them) rebuild phase, you could see Goodell negotiating a pretty significant penalty for Kraft, with Kraft, in the interest of protecting the shield and/or gambling revenues. If Belichick was ever thinking about moving on, now would be the perfect time for that team to transition over to a Josh McDaniels while Belichick slides into the Giants job, or an analyst gig for a year. There’s a general consensus that he’s been great on the NFL100 show, so maybe a year on a pregame desk would do a lot for his image.

The demise in NE is on when they have to cheat to beat the Bengals.

Thing is, they were only caught against the Bengals. Do you want me to believe this team was the only team the 10-3 Pats were cheating against? They’ve probably been doing it for years, hence the exceptionally quick admission to cheating. Deflate gate took years and they still don’t admit it.

Here’s how a penalty should work:

-Dock a 1st n a 2nd in 2020
-10% cap space penalty for 2020
-Suspend the some upper management and or coach(es) for 8 games
-Kicker: Require Pats to admit to year long cheating if there’s any evidence
-If they don’t admit, double up the penalties to go into 2021

Thats what a heavy Penalty should look like. Make them admit for the record or fine the hell out of them.

The British sport Cricket works this way. They ban the cheating players, require them to admit to cheating and if they don’t admit, a suspended portion of the ban becomes mandatory.

The penalty needs to be severe enough to dissuade them from continuing their cheating ways. No past penalty has made the flinch.

1) Lifetime probation for Kraft. Another cheating scandal and he has to sell.

2) Minimum Sean Payton suspension (1 year) for Belichick.

Anything less the Pats will see as a joke and continue cheating.

Fines for a billion dollar organization are a waste. The only punishment that will act as deterrent is the loss of multiple high draft picks.

Plus major suspension for the leadership of the team - owner and head coach.

There is no penalty Goodell can give that can take away all the Pats super bowl trophies, the extra win or 2 each year from cheating that gave them home field advantage and the path to the super bowl.

And I am not convinced  that the Pats haven't cheated the salary cap for years with Brady's $.50 cents on the dollar deal compared to all the other to QB's in the league. I would bet anything that money is funneled from some Kraft company to some Brady, or Giselle company , or Brady family member interest.
