Austin & Maulet - Are We Set at Staring CB for 2020?

Recommended Posts

While we certainly aren't looking at Revis & Cromartie, this could be a passable CB duo for at least the short term. I think Austin is for sure a #2 CB at minimum. Maulet seems to be passable too?

Austin has the added injury question mark so maybe we need to try and add a true #1 and push Maulet to nickel/dime packages?

It's certainly possible.  Not necessarily on merit, but when you need 2 WRs, almost an entire OL, and a pass rusher, you're not gonna do it all in one offseason.

We also have Hairston and Roberts under contract. I can see picking up another low end FA type if we can’t resign Poole and using a 3 or 4 during the draft to add another body.

Austin and Maulet both have to prove more but they definitely should be part
of the CB corps next year along with Poole

I do think they need better CBs.   The Jets biggest weakness on defense is against the pass.   Really the Jets need a pash rusher and CBs on defense.  They are good everywhere else.

A legitimate edge rusher/pass rusher will make any secondary instantly better, otherwise any QB will tear apart the secondary.

Resign Poole.

We currently have 4 of the top 100 picks.

IF they do wind up trading Jamal Adams, that would possibly give you six of the top 100 picks.

IF we were to have six of the top 100 picks, I would most definitely consider a CB in one of those.

Seems like Austin found himself in Williams' doghouse down the stretch.

I'd be pretty shocked if we didn't attempt to add a starting caliber corner in FA.

The touchdown he gave up before half against the Steelers was pretty brutal. Maybe that got him in the dog house?

Well, Maulet is a RFA. So they have to re-sign him first. So is Canady, I think they will look to re-sign him as well.

If I was the Jets I would cut Roberts and use that 6 mil freed up with no cap hit to aid in bringing back Poole or to re-signing Maulet and Canady. Roberts is too slow and simply past his prime. As a #2 starter he looked just as bad if not worse than Tru. I don't know why anyone would expect his play to improve next season. And as you said, they also have Hairston under contract.

I wouldn't say set... I think Austin has some big upside but is injury prone.  Maulet and Canaday are serviceable, I think getting Mosley and Williamson back and upgrading edge rusher will help a lot.  CB is not the priority OL-WR and edge rusher are.  It's more of a want to upgrade position where as the others are a must upgrade.

Austin was benched at the half against Pittsburgh and didn’t play against Buffalo. I like him but he needs work. Maulet was a nice surprise. But I’d be happy if we spent on Byron Jones and push everyone down the depth chart.

Hairston is big trash.

That TD he gave up before the half against the Steelers got him benched but I think he has talent and Williams was teaching the kid a lesson for blowing his assignment, He has the upside to be a very good starter and will get the opportunity next year

Williams/Gase seem to be upfront about playing the best players and benching players who mess up. Im sure CJ forced them to play Trumaine bc of the money. Thankfully he's a goner.

The defense was fine ——

We need all additional premium resources going toward offense.

We need an elite edge rusher BADLY.

Even a guy that is just a pass rush specialist.

Getting Mosley/Williamson/Cashman back will also help.

But yeah, we should be using just about every draft pick on offense. OL/WR/RB

Bless has been as close to a shut down CB as we have seen this year. There were stretches where QBs would stop throwing his way. He had moments where he gave up some catches and yes he was burned on that TD in the Pitt game but damn, he got benched for the rest of the game and then against the Bills, that's harsh. I thought a bit excessive by G.Williams. After all, even the best CBs in the league get burned once in a while.

Anyway. This was his rookie season. If he stays healthy I think he will be even better next season. He definitely has talent. Nickel is a unique spot that Poole is really good at playing. I think the Jets should try to retain him. You can't rely on Maulet and Bless on the outside but that doesn't mean the Jets HAVE to go after one of the top FA CBs. As most have said, they have much bigger needs. In fact, I'd be surprised if they spent a lot on a FA CB. Less surprised if they drafted one somewhere in Rd. 3-4.

No... not even close. Bless is good and had moments... but Maulet is a backup at best... They need to get Poole back as well.

If you're looking for anything other than bargain role players in free agency, you're doing it wrong. Forget about finding starting caliber guys coming via that route, especially when you're as talent-deficient as the Jets are. It's an extremely poor allocation of resources. This has been proven time and time again, not just by Mac, not just by a series of hapless Jets GMs, but across the sport.

Hariston and Roberts gotta go they both suck. We're either going to sign a big name CB hopefully Byron Jones, or take one with one of our 3rd rounders would be my guess.

I'd say if Bless stays healthy he's a very good #2 cb. We need to draft or sign a #1. Maulet could compete for the nickel.

Hell no, unless you are content with playing cover-2.   I dont trust Austin's health - tho I do believe if healthy he has the ability to be above average.  Maulet and Hairston cant play bump n run.  Reasonably speaking - we need one elite edge rusher, one elite LT, one elite OG. one elite WR and one #2 WR, and one elite CB.

Eunuwa has spinal stenosis - he's done and a fool if he tries to ever play football again.  If he does he will herniate a disk again.

Positions we are set with:  DL, ILB, S and FS, and TE.
