How Joe Douglas should rebuild Jets broken roster this NFL season

We don't need the Edge.  Gregg Williams manufactures quarterback pressure from other positions.

We need 2 OL this offseason.  A 3rd next offseason.  2 from the draft, 1 from FA.

We need 2 WR's but they are cheap and plentiful.  No worries there, both from FA.

We need 1 CB and that's coming from the draft.

See?  We can afford Jamal.

SAR I

Good points, my problem with manufacturing the rush, is it typically involves 7-8 guys blitzing.  We’ve got decent guys in the middle, would be nice to get that guy exploding in from the edge with speed.  Just creates havoc for the QB... I watched a few Rams games and it was hard to stop both Donald & Fowler, not saying we have the personnel like those two, yet...

I’d still like us to draft our OL, hopefully draft 2 starters and 1 project that can start at least by next year.  If we do go FA, just get someone can do a decent job for a year or two until the draft picks can step in.

I would avoid the FA WRs, this draft is supposedly deep with them.  Grab a true #1 WR in the first 3 rounds and one or more in the later rounds.

Agree on drafting the CB, if a good one is available, may have to take him early, though not in the first 2 rounds.

As far as Jamal goes, I have no doubt we could sign him, I just think those resources could be used in a more prudent way.

Dream off-season for me:

Free agency

-Joe thuney right guard (27) 4 years 44 mill...11/year

-Jack Conklin right tackle (25) 5 years 70 mill...14/year

-Connor McGovern center (25) 4 years 36 mill...9/ year

I think these numbers are somewhat realistic. Thuney would be the 6th highest paid right guard. Conklin would be 3rd highest paid RT. Estimated cap space from these 3 moves: 34 million.  (17% of total cap space)

Draft

Round 1.  Cee Dee Lamb Wr or Jerry Jeudy Wr (one of them will be there when we pick)

Round 2. Justin jefferson Wr lsu or Michael Pittman Wr usc (or best wr.)

Round 3. (Giants pick) Solomon kindly LG Georgia (Jets pick)  Creed Humphrey C Oklahoma

Or whoever the 2 highest rated o lineman are on JDs board in the 3rd

Bottom line: Rebuild the offensive line and draft 2 stud wrs. Make it happen JD.

Hey all. Even tho i read most of the posts, I don’t post much here myself but I really feel the need to chime in. I completely AGREE with paying Adams and am disappointed u all disagree. Let me tell u why. First of all, Joe Douglas and Roseman and the guys in Philly helped build a winning culture by keeping and paying most of their homegrown talent. That built a winning culture, something we don’t have here. Check out some quotes below

Each new addition has a story similar to Jernigan’s—of receiving a gesture that made him feel both wanted and welcome. That culture of inclusion helped new faces acclimate immediately, and it’s defined the Eagles’ success this season. “If you a have a foundation and a core group of guys that have been here for a long time, leaders who know the team, know the organization, they understand what’s expected,” center Jason Kelce says. “When you add the new pieces in, it’s very easy for those guys to understand quickly what’s going on.”

Now remember. There aren’t too many Jets star players. Jamal Adams is one. We missed on almost all our top draft picks. We finally hit on one. Why would u not pay him? Yes, the jets have multiple needs and not all that much money to fill all the holes. This is why u try and draft well, something we haven’t done in a while. But don’t try and pick up more picks By trading away the good picks uve made. Invest in them. Also, whose to say if u trade Jamal for picks, those picks will pan out? We already have this player who panned out. He’s got no off field issues. He plays hard, he’s a leader, a motivator, and a guy who loves to play the game. He’s everything u want in a player, u have to pay him. This is where u start to send a message that if u play here and help bring about a winning culture, u will be compensated and other people will want to join.

You bring up some really good points, especially with the ‘culture’ JD wants to build around the organization.

When I look at Jamal, I see many positives things that you listed above.  For me personally, the only thing I don’t like, is the some of his Twitter comments, especially around the trade deadline...

The question for me, is do you pay someone, who plays a non-impact position, as much as you would pay someone in that impact role?  Would you pay Jamal the salary of a #1 WR or a starting LT?    He’s a good player, plays with heart, loves the team, but I can’t honestly say he makes so much of an impact, that I’d pay him that much.

As for losing him in a trade, it would hurt now - we’d have to find his replacement, via FA or draft.  But if we can get someone who does 70- 80% of what he does, for a fraction of the price, plus getting draft capital, would be a huge win.

Mike mccagnan has about 200 strikes.

Its the fact that we consider Kare Vedvik a strike that I just can't seem to rap my head around.

The guy was literally signed off the street, and if I was ambition enough to find them, there were multiple threads started on how Vedvik should be our target as the kicker to tryout.  We got him and he missed a field goal and EP and we blame Douglas.  This was NEVER on Douglas, it was on Mac because he didn't want to spend a couple of million dollars on a Pro Bowl kicker, but rather $100 million on a CB that may never play in the NFL again two years after getting a fat contract.

The guy can't do anything being hired after FA, the draft, and cut-downs.  The cupboards are bare.

Lets see what Douglas does from this point on before we start talking about his replacement.  I know you are not going there beer, but there are many on this board who already stated that Douglas should be gone and to not let him have even one FA/draft period.

I agree we need roster help, but just saying its not a "rebuild of a broken roster".  We are rebuilt.  We're just tweaking.

If not for Karre Vedvik, we're 9-7.  If not for mono, we're 11-5.  We did a lot of good things with backups this year.

SAR I

Appreciate your rosy view of Jets world but Vedvik only played one game

if you want to say we should have been 8-8 I can buy that

but not 9-7

Jamal will never lead this team to the playoffs please trade him. He's about his brand. He's such a self seeking attention whore. He thinks of himself like he's some hof player. I don't see any playoff appearances or you leading the team and stopping a nose bleed when they needed a big stop in a class game against playoff teams. He will be like Rivas hold out and be a diva.

Trade him and rebuild. He talks way too much. He's annoying. Our team actually has lots of talkers. Please kids just shut up and act like you been there before. Be humble like Barry Sanders Curtis Martin were.

Until he makes game winning plays aka picks against great teams .He isn't as great as he makes himself to be.

This team needs to rebuild tge oline and set up a culture where players need to stop acting like they are great until they lead the team to wins and playoff appearances.

Sick and tired of these kids always yapping, finger wagging etc etc. Your job is to stop the offense. Not dance after making a tackle. Its your job to stop the opposing team. While you are too busy celebrating making a tackle the opposing team rushes to the line for a quick play and beat you.

I think this is a good plan, but who is playing LT?  Left Guard if Alex Lewis also needs to get signed.    When you add Beachum and Lewis to that, you have a $50mm OL.  It would be nice if we could find a draft pick to play, like Kindley, but I don't think we can count on that.

No one is saying that Jonathan Harrison is great, but with him at Center the Jets finished the year at 6-2, should have been 7-1.  Maybe we save the money there and try and draft his replacement in rds 2-3, ,such as Humphrey.

How Joe Douglas should rebuild Jets’ broken roster this NFL offseason

January 2, 2020 | 2:15pm | Updated

Joe Douglas spoke to reporters for 22 minutes on Tuesday, going over the 2019 season and looking ahead to 2020.

There were a lot of words spoken, but one simple sentence summed up what lies ahead for Douglas.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” Douglas said.

You can say that again.

The Jets’ 7-9 season showed off plenty of roster holes. Years of poor drafting and poor free-agency decisions have left the Jets with one of the worst rosters in football. Now, Douglas, who was hired in June, gets to start fixing it.

He laid out what he wants in players to build the culture he seeks.

“It’s going to take people with the right level of commitment, character and competence,” Douglas said. “Every person, every player that we bring into this building, they’re going to be assessed on their fit within our culture and their ability to help us achieve our ultimate goal, which is win a Super Bowl, year in and year out.”

Culture is only half of the equation. He also needs to bring in some talent.

Douglas probably does not need our help, but we’ll offer it anyway. Here is how we would handle the big decisions of the Jets offseason.

Taking care of their own

The Jets have just under $60 million in cap space, according to overthecap.com. That number can jump to closer to $80 million with a few cuts – Trumaine Johnson, Brian Winters and Avery Williamson all range from definitely gone (Johnson, Winters) to possibly (Williamson).

That may sound like a lot of cap room, but the Jets have 22 unrestricted free agents and their best player is going to be looking for a raise, so much of that space could be gobbled up before free agency arrives.

I would start with star safety Jamal Adams, who has two years remaining on his rookie deal but is underpaid and deserves a big deal. Adams is due to make $3.5 million in 2020, a far cry from the $14 million per year the top safeties get. Landon Collins got a six-year, $84 million deal with $44.5 million in possible guarantees from the Redskins. That is the starting point in my mind for Adams. I would make him the highest-paid safety with a six-year, $90 million contract with $50 million guaranteed, making the team’s commitment to its best player clear. Douglas would send a clear message to the locker room — if you perform, you will be rewarded.

image.gif.d25168fd86ab475007e8470203df3058.gif

After Adams, I would try to re-sign Jordan Jenkins, who led the team with eight sacks, and won’t break the bank.

The Jets need to fix the offensive line in free agency and the draft, but I would re-sign guard Alex Lewis, who played well when he became a starter. I would also bring back tackle Kelvin Beachum with the hope that the Jets land a tackle in the draft who could either play left tackle with Beachum moving to right or play on the right side for one year before replacing Beachum at left tackle in 2021.

The trickiest decision may be wide receiver Robby Anderson. It is hard to replace speed like Anderson has. However, the prices being thrown around for Anderson would scare me. If I’m Douglas, I am not going higher than $12 million per year. If Anderson gets more than that from another team, wish him well and count on your scouts to find you a speed receiver.

As for running back Le’Veon Bell, I don’t think the Jets really have a choice. He is due $13 million guaranteed in 2020. No one is trading for that contract and I don’t think it makes sense for Douglas to eat money to make a trade.

Free agency

The Jets made a huge splash in free agency last year. They committed $122 million in guarantees quickly as former GM Mike Maccagnan went for it. This year, Douglas needs to be smarter and I think he will be. I already have the Jets making a big investment in Adams.

If I’m Douglas, I am pretty much sitting out the first two days of free agency when the funny money gets spent. Then, I’m pouncing on value.

The Jets’ player acquisition priority should be simple: Protect the quarterback and affect their quarterback. That is what the Jets failed to do enough of in 2019.

Enlarge ImageDante FowlerGetty Images

Redskins guard Brandon Scherff is the top offensive lineman expected to hit free agency. I think he might be too expensive for my plan, though. The Patriots’ Joe Thuney is scheduled to be free. If he hits the market, that might be a more affordable option at guard.

The Jets are going to need at least three new starters on the offensive line between free agency and the draft. Getting a guard and a tackle during the second wave of free agency would remove some pressure during the draft.

Edge rushers are hard to find in free agency. If a team has a good one, it usually does not let him go. Jadeveon Clowney is the big name expected to be free. I would not go near him.

Bud Dupree of the Steelers is interesting, but Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said re-signing him is a priority. He also may cost too much.

Dante Fowler of the Rams may hit the market and may carry a more palatable price tag.

The Jets also need a cornerback. James Bradberry of the Panthers could be an attractive option.

One other priority I would have in free agency is backup quarterback. Sam Darnold has missed six games in his first two years. The Jets are 0-6 in those games. Jets coach Adam Gase has not had much success with backups in Miami or this season.

Teddy Bridgewater may have options as a free agent to compete for a starting job, but if he would entertain coming back to the Jets, he is worth a one-year, $10 million deal like they gave Josh McCown two years ago. The position is too crucial to pinch pennies.

The draft

It is impossible to forecast the draft in January. The Jets’ needs are going to change after free agency and players are going to rise and fall on draft boards.

The Jets have eight picks, four in the top 80. Those four players need to be starters or major contributors.

With the 11th pick, the Jets should take the best offensive lineman/edge rusher/cornerback available. This should not be “best player available” and draft another defensive tackle. Douglas should zero in on those three positions and figure out who the best player from that group is.

The best player at those positions figures to be off the board, but if someone like Georgia tackle Andrew Thomas or Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah falls to the Jets, they should pounce. More likely Iowa edge rusher A.J. Epenesa or his teammate Tristan Wirfs, a tackle, will be the pick.

Wide receiver is also a huge need for the Jets. The good news is this is a deep draft for receivers, according to the draft gurus. Douglas should be able to find a starter in the second or third round to either pair with Anderson or replace him.

Like Douglas said, there’s a lot of work to do.

I understand that perspective but certain units on the roster are absolutely broken.  I don't care if the whole OLine was healthy, that's a bad group no dominant players.  An NFL team should have at least 2 OLinemen who are clearly above average.  The Jets have zero.

And although I like Robby Anderson, Crowder is a good slot guy and Enunwa has a nice mix of size/speed/aggressiveness for a WR....none of those guys truly scare anyone.  None of them are one of the Top 32 WRs in the NFL.  That means we don't have a true #1 WR.  In fact, there are many teams (including many bad ones) who have at least 2 WRs better than the Jets (Lions, Chargers, Rams, Browns, Vikings, Falcons, Texans, etc.).  Think about that.  There are more than a few teams where the Jets best WR likely wouldn't even be the #2 there.

I agree that without injuries the Jets would have likely been better than 7-9.  Perhaps picking off Miami, Jacksonville and maybe Cincy too.  11-5 is a stretch but I'm onboard with the thesis that the injuries meaningfully impacted the Jets record.  But without injuries this team still has SEVERE deficiencies, notably on the Offensive Line, the CB group, WRs.

I'm all for spending money on a FA WR if that's what Douglas wants to do.  Anything to help Darnold get more targets is 100% the team priority IMO, the OL a component too of course.  Just saying we can't dismantle what's here on an already-good D in an effort to improve the pretty-bad O.  Losing Jamal to open up money for a WR just isn't worth the risk.

The roster has some glaring holes in major positions but it isn't as devoid of talent as some would lead you to believe. If CJ doesn't get hurt during game 1 (up 16-0 on the Bills) we are an 8 win team.  If Sam is healthy all year, they probably could have been in the playoff hunt towards the end of the season.

The Jets are two new above average offensive linemen, a starting CB and a number 1 WR away from being a playoff team if everyone can stay healthy.  We obviously need more than that to be a team capable of winning it all, but we aren't that far away from being a good football team.

I didn't do a complete mock off-season. So for that I apologize.  Maybe they can re sign beachum for a 1 year deal and draft a LT next year? It's impossible to address all of our issues in just one off season. But if you trade Adams you can add 2 extra picks in the top 100. If you go that route you can use 1 of those picks for a LT.

My main point was that If we hand out some big contracts this off-season, the 3 olineman I named would be my top priorities, and then address wr early in the draft

My goal was to realistically try & fix our biggest problems... which is clearly the offense. Specifically o line. But WR is also a huge concern to me. Robby is not worth 14 / year & There are not many good free agent wrs. By signing these 3 olineman it allows us to draft 2 stud wrs high while still getting another 2 olineman in the 3 rd.

Yes, I like your plan.  I do think resigning Beachum if he will stay for 1-2 years on a reasonable deal helps regardless.  He is solid, a good locker room guy and can play both tackle spots.   It makes drafting a project in the draft (if the top 2-3 Tackles are not available by the time the jets pick) attainable as that player can be behind Beachum for 1 year then take over.

OL depth is such an issue that I think it's actually a two year job... the depth hist doesn't exist.  Even if we do dedicate a significant amount of draft capital to it, you still have to produce decent backups.  And who knows with this hodge podge of players if there is even one long term backup worth  something.   Lewis and Harrison would be my guess.

Idon't know if the money sounds right, it may. And I'm assuming you are setting more FA $ aside for a starting CB and and Edge rusher (or at least to re-sign Jenkins) as well as to sign someone to play RT (or LT).

I like going after Thuney.

Conklin scares me b/c of his numerous injuries in the past.

McGovern is not a necessity with the way Harrison has played recently. I would rather the Jets draft a center and develop him.

Back to back WR is nonsense in the deepest WR draft in my lifetime. Not when the Jets biggest need is O-line. Even with your FA moves the Jets need a Pass Rusher, CB, and more than anything a LT. If Lamb or Jeudy is there, fine, take one of them just b/c of the value. But then you MUST take an LT in Rd. 2. If the Jets are lucky a guy like Prince Wanogho out of Auburn will be there.
