Patriots to be disciplined by NFL for illegal videotaping of Bengals

Sources: NFL to discipline Patriots for video violation

The New England Patriots are expected to be disciplined for acknowledged game-day video violations in Cincinnati, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday.

The discipline from the league is likely to come in the next two weeks, but not all security reports are back to the NFL yet, sources told Schefter.

The Patriots admitted that their production crew inappropriately filmed the field and sideline during a Dec. 8 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns and have accepted full responsibility.

The crew was credentialed by the Browns to shoot video for a Patriots web series called "Do Your Job," but the Patriots did not inform the Bengals or the NFL, which they called an "unintended oversight."

"The sole purpose of the filming was to provide an illustration of an advance scout at work on the road," a Patriots statement said at the time. "There was no intention of using footage for any other purpose."

The Patriots also said the production crew, which included independent contractors who shot the video, is not part of New England's football operation.

In 2007, the Patriots were punished by the NFL for videotaping the New York Jets' defensive playcalls on the sideline during a 2007 game at Giants Stadium won by New England 38-14. The Patriots were forced to forfeit their first-round draft pick in 2008, coach Bill Belichick was fined the maximum amount of $500,000 and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for the scandal, which was dubbed "Spygate" by the media.

I don't get the purpose of the NFL leaking this information through Shefter.

Everyone knows they have to be disciplined - video evidence has been made public of an infraction.

People want to know the results of the investigation (whatever they choose to reveal about it) and the ultimate punishment.

This is the equivalent of telling your boss you're still working on that thing you were were working on.

Of all their cheating...

This incident was pretty clearly just a combo of oversight and ignorance.

It won't be much of a penalty.

Immediately admitting that they made a "mistake" will help them.  They didn't deny it, argue against it, etc.  Probably takes it from penalizing them a 2nd round pick down to a 3rd round pick.  BUT, their history has to absolutely be taken into account here.  They dirty cheaters toe the gray line all the time.....and when they step over it they says, "Oh, we forgot to inform the Bengals....we were just filming some stuff for a scouting video, etc."  When you find one cockroach that means there's 100 in the walls that you don't see.  THAT is the Patriots.

I think the punishment will be disappointing.  Something like a fine and a mid round pick.   Schefter tweeted out some "comparable" punishments recently (none of which were comparable) and they were all low picks or money.  The reason will be that they can't tie it to football operations.

The punishment should be extreme.  They are multiple offenders and obviously haven't learned their lesson.  Since the death penalty isn't an option the league should set a precedent.  Take away all their compensatory picks and distribute their regular draft picks to the teams in the division.  The division has been the biggest victims over the past 20 years with the constant cheating.

Miami gets the 1st and 6th.

We get the 2nd and higher 4th.

Buffalo gets the 3rd and lower 4th.

They can keep the 2020 7th.

Ha!

I love this. I love this.

Good job Jimmy.  Good job Jimmy.

What do you mean they haven't learned their lesson?  Philadelphia beat them in the SB the year they weren't caught cheating.

1.  Lose to Dolphins.

2.  Eliminated from playoffs.

3.  Sanctions from Spygate II.

4.  Brady leaves.

5.  Belichick leaves.

6.  Kraft does hard time for prostitution.

7.  Patriots fans set NFL record for season ticket expirations.

8.  Jets win AFC East.

2020 is going to be great.

The Patriots get repeatedly accused of, investigate for, and outright convicted for glaring crimes of flagrant cheating but the NFL media still goes on and on about the greatness of Belichick and the greatness of Brady as if the cheating had nothing to do with their success. It’s really mind-boggling the way the Pats are covered by people who should know better. Tye MLB and NBA, as sh*tty as they are, would contract a franchise that got repeatedly caught pulling half of the sh*t the Pats do.

Everyone loves Bonnie and Clyde and as a former New Yorker I always felt a sense of pride that our crime bosses got credit for how well they dressed.

I think you are spot on. They’ve done a masterful job at sweeping the investigation under the rug.

It'll be short and sweet.

You’ve still got it, Ernie Adams.

It's all because of Goodell.  Because he bungled Spygate (punishment far too light) and Deflategate (punishment probably too heavy in that instance, in an effort to make up for Spygate), the media took sides against Goodell instead of the Pats.

And with Goodell's reputation and credibility weakened, its been easy to give Belichick a pass.

Only now is the media maybe starting to turn against the Pats.

I think this might be an indication of BB planning to leave and just saying eff it
