Pass Rush Plan (Free Agency)

Recommended Posts

Don't know much about Judon but pairing him with Jenkins seems like a good approach.  I'd stay away from Beasley.....he's become the Leo Williams of Edge guys (taken in the same Draft too).  Giving him a big payday might be as smart as giving one to Mo Wilkerson.

Prioritize Jenkins....add someone else, be it Judon or similar.

My number one target in free agency would be Matt Judon (BAL).  Our front office
and CJ Mosley have history with him, he's coming from an attack defense and he's
had steady production in his career:

https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/3961466/matthew-judon

Also based on what ZaDarius Smith did in GB its not crazy to think Judon can reach
another level of production if he's a "featured pass rusher".  In addition I wouldn't
mind if Joe Douglas "double dips" and investigates Vic Beasley (ATL):

https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/2512400/vic-beasley-jr

He really fell off after his 15.5 sack season and you have to question why ATL is
letting him hit the market.  But maybe Gregg Williams can tap into the talent Beasley
showed earlier in his career and we could actually have a 1-2 punch off the edge

Great thought but no way Balt. lets Judon walk. They have cap space and a cheap QB. He also probably gives them the right to match any contract offer. Why walk away from a team with a top 10 "D" and a top 5 "O" to come to the Jets???

Hit this right on the $. He'll be a Raven.

We were the 7th ranked Defense in the NFL in 2019.

We were missing almost our entire LB Corp., including our big, expensive Free Agent (Mosely).

We have a Safety who is effectively an in-the-box Run-stopping and Pass Rush specialist who can do some coverage too, that the fan-base wants to build around (Adams).

And we invested our #1 (#3 overall) pick in a DT that was supposed to be so good a prospect that he would provide legit pass rush as well.

In terms of franchise priorities, pass rush simply isn't that high, when you look at the complete lack of talent on our Offense, the worst offense in the NFL, and an offense that hasn't been "good" in ages now.  How can we justify yet more investment into a top-10 defense when we're so deeply horrible on Offense?

Edge may simply have to wait while the team prioritizes FA and Draft acquisitions for the offense (of which we need almost everything other than QB and TE).  Cheap FA signings, fine, but no big money, and no high draft picks should be invested in edge in 2020.  With a healthy roster, I trust Williams (who coaches a top 10 D with mostly backups) to scheme pass rush.

2020 simply must be about rebuilding the offense, and making it FINALLY a competitive unit for this era of NFL football.

Your sanity is welcome. Jet fans are always like "if we just had this one more piece on defense."

If we invested in this respect than the only money we would spend in FA besides this would be for whatever Olineman we get/want outside of the draft. That way we can then just get the WR or 2 from the draft and if we get the pass rushers you mentioned maybe take a flier on another Edge rusher mid to late in the draft for more depth and a younger player. Somehow I feel like you are saying we have to do it this way since we probably need to take either Oline or WR over Edge rusher not only in round 1 but probably in round 2 also. It may be fools gold, but our D was functional enough even with some pressure here and there, but this O at both Oline and WR is not functional enough which is what cost us the Jax, Fins, Cincy, etc. games and in essence the playoffs.

It would all depend on how the draft plays out.

We will have 4 picks in the top 100. What happens if Chase Young somehow fell to number 11?  What if A.J. Epenesa fell to the 2nd round?  What if Curtis Weaver is there with our second pick in the 3rd round?  You never know how a draft will play out.

Short of something like that happening, I would agree that our top four picks should be a LT, C, WR, and perhaps a RB.  But if there is talent that slips, you sometimes have to take it.

Judon would be a great option... We've had this conversation before, he's just as steady a rusher as they come, a few years of very consistent production and a good chance at an uptick if featured.  The problem is i really doubt the ravens let him go after losing defensive pieces the last few years, and I do think his pricetag would be higher than I'd be willing to spend.

Going into FA a few names I liked was Bud durpee, and Judon but the more I think about it the more i dont think financially we'll be able to spend the money to get those guys.  I also really like, who i also was high on last offseason, is markus golden too.

I don't care who they sign, as long whoever it is is a good enough option to dissuade them from picking a defensive player at #11.

Beasley would be interesting if we don't sign Jordan Jenkins. Personally I think Jenkins needs to be at the top of our pre-FA wishlist to lock him up. He's been steady and is a team leader.

Pairing that stability with a guy like Judon who could break out at any moment, with the admittedly solid depth they have there after this season with Luvu/Basham, edge rusher won't look so bad.

Beasley is a one year wonder

Legit pass rushers never hit free agency the last time that happened was Mario Williams 8 years ago

It's  amazing how low the bar is. Jenkins is ok. He is invisable on too many plays to be relied upon.

Jets should not pay an OLBer  like judon 16-17 mill a year. That $ needs to go to the o line. The chance to get an OLBer was last year with Josh allen. And Mac blew it. Douglas needs to focus on the offense

Just blitz the Prez twice as often, problem solved.

I'm sure Hewitt can cover Julio Jones on a go route.

Its an offenses wet dream to get Julio Jones in single coverage with Hewitt or Adams.  Any S or LB for that matter

Half the guys in the top 10 have changed teams.  Another few are on their rookie deals.  I think Barrett, Dupree, Fowler and Quinn are all UFA.  Off the top of my head, Frank Clark and Dee Ford swapped teams from the 2018 list.

Yes, but there's this thing called the salary cap, and you can't field Pro Bowlers at every position for just that reason.

Jenkins is the 2nd coming of Calvin Pace. Sets the edge, will get you some sacks, good leader and a good teammate.

You need those guys on your roster.

I'm not saying the guy is bad, but he's not much above JAG status. There will be pass rushers available in FA. Jamie Collins probably will be a FA.  That guy is a pass rusher.

I get it Bit, but you should know as well as anyone anything can happen at the draft.

Was Aaron Rogers suppose to fall to 24?

Was Randy Moss suppose to fall to 21?

Was Dez Bryant suppose to fall to 24?

What happens if there is a bad drug test, a DUI, an assault allegation?

The odds are, Chase Young goes #2.  But I remember watching that draft with Aaron Rodgers, and there was NO way that was suppose to happen....for any reason.

Is this a joke I am not getting?  Are you pointing out that Jamie Collins has 21.5 sacks compared to Jenkins 20.5, despite an extra three years in the league?

One day we won't have to sign someone from another team's discard pile, and will have a homegrown pass rusher of our own that other teams covet.

15 years and counting since we had a legit pass rusher on this team.

Chase Young might be the only EDGE rusher in Rd 1

just keep that in mind

Remember that Judon was a 5th round pick from Grand Valley State. Smart drafting teams can really make hay in the later rounds. That's what sets teams like Baltimore and the Steelers apart.

and why we Hire Joe Douglas... Hopefully Douglas will be able to find talent in the later rounds.

I think people are too worried  about this homegrown sh*t.  Get good players.  Tennessee, Minnesota, San Francisco and New Orleans all made the playoffs with QBs from other teams.  The Chiefs, Texans, and Ravens all made the playoffs with QBs drafted when "there were no franchise QBs available."  Same for NE and Seattle, if a bit longer ago.  On the pass rush side, the Chiefs traded for Frank Clark.  The Seahawks for Jadeveon Clowney.  The Packers added Preston and Za'darius Smith and they both had double digit sacks.  The problem is not how you get talent.  It is getting talent.

He was the team leader, but with a career high 7, 1 less than Jenkins and 0.5 more than Adams.
