Nice work.  I assume you mean locks as long as they don't get traded?

Overall you used "lock" very liberally on several players:

  • I wouldn't put Cannon in the absolute lock pile.  Sure he's cheap and has 2 years left on a cheap rookie deal.  But what does he do that isn't replaceable by, say, a UDFA or 2?
  • Winters is a clear cap casualty.  No lock by any means.  Only way he's back is if we cut him and then re-sign him for less.
  • Trumaine Johnson is 100 % gone.  Save the $3M and free up a roster spot.
  • McDermott doesn't strike me as an absolute lock either.  Being pressed into LG duties doesn't automatically mean he'll be back.
  • Burgess is a UFA so he's not a lock either.  I'd certainly like to bring him back though.
  • Is Langi an OLB or ILB?  If he's an ILB, he's far from a lock.  We have a lot of bodies there.  If Burgess is brought back, why bring back Langi?

That drops the number under 30 in my mind.

Williamson is a tough one because I think he could be nasty paired with CJ but the way the kids played in his absence, it's tough to justify not going for the savings by cutting him.

Williamson was arguably our best defensive player 2 years ago.  It would be an absolute shame to cut him.  At the very least we need to try to trade him for something, even if its only, say, a 6th rounder or conditional 5th rounder.

I know Darron Lee is about 2.5 years younger and his contract was significantly less expensive (less than $2M cap number) for KC to take on than it would be for a team acquiring Williamson ($6.5M cap number for the team that acquires him, I think?), but if he can net a 6th, Williamson should get us at least that.

If JD doesnt cut Tru and Winters as soon as he can, I'd be shocked and appalled and would be very worried about the man in charge.

What does Josh Bellamy do for this team exactly?

I hope the only way we cut Avery is if his contract prevents us from signing another FA. I really like Avery but it would be understandable if they didn't want to have 2 LBs getting paid top 15 money.

I *think* Burgess is a controllable free agent, not sure though

Good point.  Still, the way the kids played in his place it's hard to justify that much money being spent on ILB's.

You're right, he's an RFA.  I'm not sure how RFA tenders work for UDFA's though.  We wouldn't get any draft compensation if he signs elsewhere, so I guess its just a matter of having the option to match any offers he gets or lose him for nothing?

In my opinion, green are the units that should not get heavy attention (ex. big FA $$$, high Draft picks) this offseason.  Maybe add some depth, sign a middling Free Agent or use a late round Draft pick...but we shouldn't be using a lot of capital on these units.

Orange needs some attention, maybe add key player or more depth meaning multiple players.

Red is for Red Alert!  Need significant attention, FA $$$ commitment and/or first or second day Draft pick usage.

Agree with others. Winters, Johnson, and Roberts are virtual locks to be cut at their cap numbers with how they’ve performed.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Williamson, Bellamy, and Enunwa gone either. The LB’s played well in the absence of Williamson and Mosley and that money is better spent elsewhere as much as I like Williamson.

And the WR room needs an infusion of talent and youth. Enunwa can’t stay healthy and Bellamy is expensive for a guy who doesn’t produce on offense. Like Smith and Berrios as developmental guys but I think ideally they’re the 5/6 next year.

I think the number of players under contract who should be on the team and not replaced is probably closer to 25.

For the money, Winters, Johnson and Bellamy should be cut.  Williamson and Roberts could be cut for the cap savings.  Cannon, Wesco, Longi, Hairston and Maulet are upgradeable.

I would say that all seven draft picks make the team, as well as at least 2 UDFA.   So JD has to find another 35 or so players.  Good luck with that.

Cannon was easily the best special teams player on the team before he go hurt - he's not much of a returner, but a great all around special teamer.

On a properly constructed roster there is no need for Bellamy AND Cannon.  Cannon offers little to no benefit other than running down the field on special teams.

Also, what a depressing list of offensive players.  Every year it’s the same thing, needing to sign some over priced free agents to fill roles on a yearly basis and having to essentially start over every year with this unit.  I hope one day we can go into an off-season with a core of decent guys at important positions and just need to fill a spot or two, instead of needing to build an entire unit every March.  Douglas needs to really hit the next two drafts out of the park,  Because without that this is going to be Groundhog Day every offseason

Isn’t Blake Cashman under contract as well?

He is, I have him as a potential backup linebacker.  With Mosley, Williamson, Burgess, and Langi, Cashman might be the odd man out, but one of those 4 might get hurt or traded, so you never know

Good Post.

These stood out to me at first galnce:

I don't think Josh Bellamy or Avery Williamson are locks to make the team.  Edwards, our punter, though his last two games weren't great has been very solid overall and I would surprised if he didn't make the team next season.

For some reason Mac gave Bellamy a guaranteed two year deal, I don't think the money is enough to lock him in.  BTW, I like Williamson, but he makes good money and Douglas may feel we can replace him and save on the cap.
