The actual use-case of the NFL Salary Cap.

Positional value, that is the answer right there.

If this move is in a vacuum then yes pay your all pro SS the cash and be happy but this team has so totally neglected many positions of higher value that by the time you cobble together players there your all pro SS has fallen off.

We also are going into year three of the QB and we have no oline at all.

If you can parlay as SS (a position of relatively low value in todays nfl) to help reset other positions you should do it.

The reason for the Adams talk right now?  He is never going to be at a higher value trade wise.

Parlaying Adams into draft picks is a different conversion than the salary cap impact which you failed to address.

The NY Jets don't have much to show from #1 picks over the last 10 years, but we finally get a great one and certain posters hate and want to trade hm.

Teams used to be in cap hell and good players sometimes made free agency.

Then the tv deals came in and the cap exploded and it became less important to be thrifty and economical since no one really was hurting that bad anymore. Hence we have less good players making free agency especially with the franchise tag available.

The smart teams started resigning their own talent earlier, especially qb  because wages would start exploding once contracts adjusted over time and less value hit the open market.
