To be honest I can see both sides of the coin here. Jamal is a good player. His stats are inflated from a in-the-box standpoint because of the way we utilize him and the lack of tangible pass rush ability elsewhere. He is solid in run support, and decent at coverage, though not in any way a ballhawk. He is definitely a top safety in the league but he is a safety.

Late in the year when he was out our defense didnt really seem all that different. As good as he is I am not sure he is that huge of an impact player.

He does of course make us a better team, he is a good leader, and it is good for teams to reward their drafted players that perform.

That said I can completely see the other side.

Say we get a 1st and 3rd for Jamal. Well if we turn that into a starting OL and WR that would definitely be a higher impact on the team than Jamal himself. Certainly a lot risk for draft picks, but I think it can be a justifiable risk.

His stats aren't inflated.  If they were others would just be told to do what he does.

And he drops into coverage, its sad that fans don't get that

Listen, hes a all pro player, there's no guarantee the get even.a serviceable player in return.  Thats my beef.

Likely will produce 4 starters:  Williams, Edoga, Cashman and Austin, as well as two solid contributors (Phillips and Wesco).  I don't agree that this was a bad draft (Polite, of course, was a disaster).  It really turns on whether Williams plays better in future.

Williams projected to play better after we trade him in 2024, like we did with Leo. But of course, like Leo, he won’t.

"He was used less late in the year to prevent injury not because he gave up a TD to Pittsburgh"

WUT?  Where did you get this sheer and utter nonsense?

I don't think he was benched for safety reasons, but I also think it's highly unlikely he got benched for simply allowing a TD pass after playing pretty well over multiple games.

If I had to guess, Austin went into business for himself on that play and didn't follow the coverage that was called.  The Jets appeared to be in Cover 1 with a single high safety.  Austin sits on a meaningless hitch route and gets burnt deep.  I would imagine they were told to stay over the top of everything and he didn't listen, thinking he could get a pick.

I doubt it was, "hey you got beat for a TD come sit down for the next 6 quarters.". Probably more along the lines of "hey, this is the NFL, you can't just do whatever you want, come sit down to get that message."
