nice list.  they need a place kicker too.  i'd like to see them pair a good free agent receiver with a second tier rookie or go wr with the 11th pick and then sign a decent vet, maybe sanders.  i almost think they can keep beachum at lt and then draft a guy they can put at right but then move to left.

I think they need a punter more than a kicker.  Ficken is an ERFA, so at worst they are where they were last year.  Lach Edwards is a UFA and the only guy they have under contract is Ian Berryman who was in Steelers camp last season.  Maybe they really like Berryman, but there is more uncertainty there.

Sarge.....I feel there are 5 imperative additions we need to make this FA period/draft, and all have to be starters. 3 OL, ideally at least 2 in the draft, thinking most likely will be an OT a C, with the third guy in FA. 2 WR's, if Robby back, one in draft, if he leaves, 2 in draft. Also think edge will be addressed in draft.

From some combination of our 1st 4 draft picks and 4 main free agency signings, we need:

  1. Offensive Tackle (1st rd draft pick?) (Yes... Hopefully one will be left for us)
  2. Center (3rd rd draft pick?) (Rounds 3, 4 or 5- Could also be a guard and keep Harrison at C)
  3. Another Offensive Lineman (Free Agent)
  4. Wide Receiver (2nd rd draft pick?) (Yes... Unless the top OT's are gone when we go at 11 in that case, WR as first pick and O-Line with the second)
  5. Wide Receiver (Re-Sign Robby or Free Agent?) (sign Robby and get another in round 1 or 2 depending on if there is an OT in round one that we want)
  6. Cornerback (Re-sign Poole?) (yes. Pool)
  7. Cornerback (Free Agent?) (anyway you slice it, we are going to have motley CB's this year.  Improve it in 2021. Way too many needs to fix them all and make CB good too this year)
  8. Edge Rusher (3rd rd Draft Pick?) (wishful thinking- a quality edge will have to wait for 2021.  You get them at the top of the first round or you lose your shirt in FA with a bloated deal that never seems to work out for anyone- we have to do without for another year while O-line gets gets fixed and WR gets improved)

Resign Beachum, Lewis, Poole, Robbie and Hewitt.

Go hard after Glasgow, Vaitai, possibly Thuney. Conklin would be great but maybe unrealistic with how many teams will be after his services.

Depending on how much $$$ is left over, try to get one big name FA or 3-4 depth guys like Robert Quinn, Perriman..

Rd1: OT, WR

Rd2: WR, OT, C

Rd3: WR, G, C, RB, CB

Rd3(2nd pick):same as Rd3 but maybe add an edge rusher if Anae or someone else is there.

Rd 4: Grab a 2nd WR if a 2nd one hasn't been taken yet. Need to get 2 WR prospects from the 1st 4 round from this draft. Something like Mims/Pittman Jr or if we go WR in rd1, Jeudy/Claypool would be amazing.

I think a couple of offensive linemen are missing unless you’re penciling in Edoga and the return of Winters. Those two, Harrison, Ben Braden, and Connor McDermott are the only offensive linemen on the roster who have actually been on rosters (maybe one of back end centers was but I don’t think so). Winters is a likely cap casualty and the other four all need some competition at least.

Been saying this for some time. Despite “competitive rebuild” seasons in 2015 and 2016, followed by a total teardown in 2017 and building “the right way” in 2017-2019, this team still needs more than half a football team of starters.

F***ing Jets.

Hopefully Douglas is more than just an incremental improvement over his predecessor, because if we go from 12-14 holes to just 7-10 holes we still suck unless the ones that get filled are those that can’t just be bought or drafted at will every year since there are only so many adequate ones walking the earth.

I’d want all addressed positions were filled with good players, but I’d rather the team was shopping for a good pair of safeties and a “best player in the draft” DE-DT than a good pair of bookend OTs and a WR1.

  2. Outside Linebacker (Re-Sign Jenkins or Free Agent?)
  3. Outside Linebacker (Re-Sign Copeland or Free Agent?)
  4. Backup RB (4th rd draft pick??)
  5. Punter (Re-Sign Edwards?)
  6. Backup Safety (5th rd draft pick or re-sgin Miles or Farley?)

We’ve coined/use the term “PREMIUM” here. This is what we are referring to when we say premium positions.

I don't think you are going to have any money leftover after you sign your free agents, and go after those other guys.  You are probably over $30M in guys you are retaining.  Then you are looking to add 3 high level guys?  How much space are we supposed to have?

Assuming no Trent Williams-this is new thinking on my part:

1-First round pick will be Thomas, Wills, Wirfs or Becton.  One will be there.

2-Second round pick has to be WR.  There will be a great WR there.  Unfortunately, there will be good Centers there, but I would go for good and not great.

3-Third round picks can be a combination of WR, G, C, CB or EDGE-BPA.

4-Sign at least 2 OL.  I like the idea of a Glasgow or McGovern and not reaching for a C in the draft.

5-Great value in trying to re-sign Poole and Jenkins.  I think, with what Beachum wants and his attitude, I would roll the dice on the draft.

6-If Robby does not resign, that means a 3rd round pick is a WR too.  That is ok.  Sign another OL.

After letting Winters, Roberts, Tru, Bellamy, Josh Adams and possibly Avery Williamson go, should be enough cap space. I would trade Avery for a 4th if Hewitt resigns for a reasonable cost. Way too much money tied up into MLB.

Not sure I agree with the top 8.

1. LT (at worst Edoga can start at RT. LT is completely bare.)

2. OG x2 (I'm assuming Winters is a cap casualty. The Jets need two capable starting OGs.)

3a. CB x2 (As bad as the WR corps is, the current state of the CBs is even worse. Assuming they cut Tru and Roberts (and they better), Bless is the only viable starter, and he has very little experience and a history of injuries.)

3b. WR x2 (Almost as bad as the CB position, the only viable starter the Jets have is Crowder. But at least we saw some flashes from Berrios and V.Smith last year. And at least Darnold will have Herndon and Griffin to throw to.) Still I have WR as 3b.

4. RT (The Jets had Edoga and Shell and still could not protect Darnold's right side. I have no faith in Edoga. The Jets need someone to compete with Edoga for the RT position.)

5. Edge (even with Jenkins having one of his best seasons it seemed like the Jets could not get to the QB without blitzing. However, unlike #4 above, I DO have some faith in Gregg Williams figuring out a way to generate pressure with the D-linemen and LBs we have on the roster right now. We may also find someone in the draft that Williams can use as a pass rush specialist.

6. C (Harrison is a decent starter but not a long term solution and the Jets need someone in case he goes down). A developmental C or versatile OG draft pick makes a ton of sense.

7. Backup RB (Our only legit starting RB is coming off a bad season and already has one foot out the door. He is guaranteed to be released next season and its far from certain that he will remain a Jet by the start of the season. The Jets need to draft a backup RB for the future.)

You aren't going to address those needs in two years... you won't in three either.  You will probably have 3 to 4 indispensable starters by the end of the next year and then make do with the rest.  Get the best players at positions that are the hardest to replace... then workshop the rest.  So like two interior lineman to go on a LT (when we eventually sign one)  Macc was an idiot when it came development and drafting, but the one thing he did do (and Douglas does to some extent) is buy low on a player with a higher ceiling.  That will be key to this team making a SB.  You have to take risks so it might as well be on a guy who at his best day can play at a high level.  That's one thing I love about football.  There is always talent slipping through other teams hands.  A Pro Bowler that another team falls through the cracks as an UDFA.  A player who switches positions and becomes an All Pro.  That sh*t never happens in the NBA.  You never see your team find these diamonds in the rough.  Like never, unless your the Lakers and Celtics who can force small markets to basically give them their best players for nothing.  But if you don't get one the top 5 picks, your chances of signing a player who can become great are garbage.  In the NFL there is no talent vacuum.

Need a little more on the oline. Lewis is fine to bring back, but we need to invest more FA $ in say a G like Thuney and maybe even a T like Conklin. May not be able to afford both without losing a lot off the list you stated, but we have to get at least 1. Counting on just 2 high draft picks is not going to make this line much better if at all then it was last year.

We also can't just rely on Maulet and Bless as starting CBs. We need a FA there as well.

It's amazing how we have a need for all the premium positions (except QB).

But on the bright side, we have the best talent at all the non-premium positions (Adams, Mosely & Bell).

I'm still trying to figure out Macagnan.

Still convinced the 2-3 teams picking after the Jets flooded the zone with reports of how this player or that player was “the best player in the draft” knowing Macc would always bite.

Not a problem for Big Joe. Plenty of available players that didn’t play last season - mainly because they were cut but some also retired and are probably willing to make a comeback for say 8mil.

It's not out of the realm of possibility to net seven highly contributing players? If Joe Douglas is truly the great GM ownership thinks he is, then TWO starting OL in FA should be slam dunk. The Jets have need and plenty of money along with an ambassador type player in Jamal Adams.

Joe Douglas drafts well and comes away with TWO starting OL, a corner, and two WR's late.

It's just going to take doing something no Jets GM has done since about 2006. The Jets will need to become good drafters once and for all.

This.  In this draft the Jets can up come with 4 very good players.

They could sign another 4 very FA players.

Easy peasy.
