LOL!

Professional career

Fant was expected to go undrafted after playing only a single year of playing tight end at the collegiate football level. Due to his limited experience, Fant was not one of the 15 collegiate tight ends to attend the NFL Scouting Combine. On March 29, 2016, he attended Western Kentucky's pro day, along with Brandon Doughty, Tyler Higbee, Prince Charles Iworah, and 11 other prospects. Fant was listed as an offensive lineman during WKU's pro day and weighed in at 296 lbs, 26 lbs heavier than his playing weight of 270 lbs during the season.[6] He impressed the Seahawks' co-director of player personnel Trent Kirchner with his athletic ability and worked out at multiple positions including: linebacker, defensive end, defensive tackle, tight end, and offensive tackle. Although he didn't have game film, he was able to impress enough with his athletic ability and size that the Seahawks signed him solely based on a single workout. Offensive line coach Tom Cable had to make the decision between Fant and another offensive line prospect but chose Fant because he was a "long-armed athlete".[2][7]

When you're signing UDFAs, you want the ones who are projectable athletes with upside, not the pluggers who've hit their ceilings.

Note from wiki

On December 2, 2019, in a Monday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, Fant garnered attention for helping the Seahawks rush for a season-high 218 yards in a 37-30 win. He reported as an eligible receiver on 42 plays during the game and lined up at multiple positions along the line. [

Well we need receivers too so this is an unexpected bonus.

Well Pauline called it, which suggests that Gase is changing up what we do offensively and looks like we will need players that fit the scheme. Not a lot of risk depending on how the contract is structured. Conklin was not a good fit, risky and overrated. Glasgow was a good target but there are some caution flags with him.

Ohio taxes nothing like NY.  Among other benefits to living in NY, we taxpayers fund driver licenses for illegal immigrants.

The jets play and practice in NJ.  The only times he would pay NY taxes is when we play the bills.

Unless he lives in NYC which is unlikely

Lateral signing from Beachum. A bit younger and more versatile, can play RT and is guaranteed to have one touchdown on a trick play.

Hopefully we get a guy at 11 to play LT, let’s say we do and the rookie is good enough to start at LT.  Can either Fant or Edoga kick inside to play guard? Neither is a people mover but both could probably pass protect at G better than we had last year.

as of now

LT: Fant

LG: ?

? Harrison

RG: Winters

RT: Edoga

ugh

Or you could draft the OT have him play guard first year and then move him outside.

The Jets began their OL rebuild by signing former Seahawks LT George Fant to a three-year, $30M contract that includes $13.7M in guarantees, per ESPN. It's a lot of money for a player with only 24 starts and has never played more than 63 pct of the snaps in a season. He's regarded as a low-end starter, high-end backup. He's athletic (former college hoops), but this is a bit of a head scratcher. It means they don't have to force a left-tackle pick in the draft.

Ouch!

Not give large amounts of money to backup OL?

The guy he was backing up wasn't even good.

Good will get paid really really well.  Average will get paid really well.  Decent backup with promise will still get paid.  That's usually how free agency works.  Everything is a risk.  It's like we forget every year that FA rarely works out.  But you can't go into the draft looking for two starters with no backups.

So there seems to be a conflict. He gave up only 2 QB hits and 2 sacks last year in only 266 pass block attempts.

And yet he's considered bad?

Now Wilson might skew some of that, but that's the territory of having a mobile QB. Sam is a mobile QB so that shouldnt be a problem

1. Sam isn't nearly as mobile as Wilson

2. He was a backup to another bad RT

Almost feels like we have to get Trent Williams at this point

Another very athletic tackle which fits this wide split line Gase wants to run.

I just don’t see us spending the money, unless Douglas is waiting for free agency to wind down, which could drive Trent’s $ and Washington draft pick requests down.

Which is interesting because in 2016 he played at LT. I wonder if he's a better LT than RT. INteresting

I dont want Sam running for his life consistently but he is mobile so that doesnt bother me

So Fant plays LT. Does this mean Thomas or any of the top 4 are now out the picture? I wouldn’t doubt it. Perhaps JD can resign Kahil for another year.
Fant? Really? Fant? I just can’t.

Fant Lewis Harrison (G ?) Edoga

Holy sheet stain Batman ?

I’ve watched plenty of Fant over the years.  Decent run blocker.  Mediocre at best pass protector who Wilson made look better than he is

But he is better than Edoga who totally sucks

6 year vet vs. 1st year rookie. That’s a fair evaluation. Kid still has the baby fat. Let him develop

George Fant

The NFL free agency “legal tampering” period is underway and according to Adam Schefer the NY Jets have reached an agreement with Seahawks offensive tackle George Fant.

Former Seahawks’ OT George Fant reached agreement with the Jets on a three-year, $30 million deal that includes $13.7 million guaranteed, per @JFowlerESPN and me.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 17, 2020

Source confirms this.

Biggest thing here: Just $13.7m is guaranteed. https://t.co/SojLa3YYDJ

Some George Fant fast facts:

  • Went to Western Kentucky University and played basketball for four years
  • Played football for one season as a tight end and saw limited action
  • In 2016 he signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent
  • Tore his ACL in 2017 and missed the season
  • He has started 24 games as a hybrid lineman \ tight end in his career

The 27 year old Fant is listed at 6’5″ and 322lbs. He is going to be very raw because his football experience is limited. Joe Douglas obviously likes what he sees so the roster rebuild is officially underway. You can read more about George Fant to the NY Jets in our forums.

It's still a massive overpay. He is very similar to Ty Nsekhe who the Bills signed last year. Swing Tackle who played both sides and was mainly a backup.

The difference is Ty Nsekhe was actually better when he played and he was backing up Good O-lineman so he had reason to be buried on the death chart unlike Fant. The Bills also payed Nsekhe 5mil per year unlike the Jets who are paying 10mil per year.

Pancake blocks are great to watch, but consistency is key and especially for OL. Fant struggles there and for an offense that needs consistency more than anything...they signed a guy who isn't..for a critical position.

I mean yeah. But upside is nice too. I don’t like the signing but these clips do exist.
