BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) -- A high school student who complained that a teacher forced him to sit on the floor during a midterm exam -- for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey -- has left the school district after what his father said was continued harassment and silence from students.

"He doesn't feel wanted," Brian Vannoy said of his son, Joshua. "I just want him to be happy in school."

Joshua Vannoy, 17, enrolled at a new school Friday, his father said. Brian Vannoy would not identify the school.

Big Beaver Falls Area School District officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Vannoy, a junior, stopped going to Beaver Falls High School after he said his honors ethics relations teacher John Kelly, a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, forced him to take the midterm sitting on the floor and encouraged other students to pelt him with wads of paper.

Vannoy wore the jersey of retired Broncos quarterback John Elway to class Jan. 20, two days before the Steelers beat the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

Vannoy returned Jan. 30 with an escort. He dropped Kelly's class for a study hall but he faced stony silence and some comments, though no threats of physical violence, his father said.

"He gave it a while," Brian Vannoy said. "But it just wasn't getting any better."

Vannoy received national attention and a $3,000 leather heat-massage reclining chair designed by Elway.

Kelly has called the incident "silly fun." The district said he apologized and told students to respect Vannoy.

After an investigation, the district said Kelly would not be disciplined and that he "has already been the brunt of adverse public opinion."

Students who take the course often are singled out to exemplify uncomfortable treatment and they know this when they enroll for the class, the district said. Crumpled paper was thrown at Vannoy, but not during the exam.

The Vannoys were disappointed the district took no action against Kelly, Brian Vannoy said. "They just turned in onto Josh," he said.

The kid is in an ethics relations honors class. Obvously the kid didn't understand the exercise and shouldn't of had been in the class anyway. This should have nothing to do with the teacher or the school protecting its own, alas people like you two deichper it that way. The school defended the teacher because he was in the right and the kid was in the wrong. The kid should have known better to be in a class that he obviously has no idea what it actually is.

Honors ethics relations?!! Good thing we aren't competing with China, Japan and a host of other countries in an age where new technologies rule the day!

: Scott, things aren't as happy as they used to be down here at the unemployment office. Joblessness is no longer just for Philosophy majors - useful people are starting to feel the pinch.

You guys shouldn't make up your minds about this without all the facts. Until it says whether or not all of the students in the class were subject to this excercise, its hard to say whether or not it was right or wrong. If its part of the class, then all of the students should have to deal with it. If he was singled out and was the only one that had to do it, then its not a very good lesson plan. If everyone in the class went through the same kind of thing during its duration, then there's nothing wrong with it.

obviously you aren't that swift. anyone that uses the phrase "shouldn't of," clearly isn't of einstein material, and quite frankly, isn't in any position to be commenting about what a kid should have, or should not have expected vis-a-vis taking a school course. but that's beside the point. the fact of the matter is that if you are taking a mid term, the last thing you want to have to deal with is bull**** like sitting on the floor and being ridiculed by fellow students. i commend the kid for even going through with that. i know if that was me that i would've told the teacher to go **** himself, walked out, and taken it up with the administration, and i would've been heard loud and clear too on the issue because that is bull****. i know that you are just an armchair message board quarterback, and that's great and all, but that's all you are. let's say you, sir, were in that situation. how would you have reacted if you were trying to take such a highly weighted test, while being ridiculed by some douchebag steeler fan teacher, as well as having all your classmates throwing **** at you, as you tried to take this exam? you'd be whining and bitching about it, and if you don't, it just shows that you are probably some **** up moron that failed out of school that is unemployed and collecting a welfare check, as you sit on your ass and do nothing, not caring about anything or your school work, and what that means in relation to college, and how that shapes getting a job, etc. the teacher is a moron who should be fired for doing that stunt, and it should be a lesson to administrators across the country to make sure they do their best to try to not hire imbeciles like these anymore.
