Goodell orders shutdown of facilities

Recommended Posts

What took him so long.  Its not like anyone is allowed to practice anyways.  Guess the draft will be pushed back but they might as well have it.  What are they going to do, wait for the draft in 2021 when a whole new set of rookies are set to be drafted?

Remember the sabotaged thread: Prediction: all major sports will be cancelled in 2020.

Safety first. Ooops I mean caution.  I just cant see how they all wont be.  Even if numbers drop, there's still no vaccine projected until a year to 18 months and even if its developed there are variables to its effectiveness that could even stretch that timeline.

The draft will be done virtually. You will probably need to follow it on the net

The NFL will never allow that.

It will still be a studio production on a very limited set, and you will probably just see Goodell at the podium.

ESPN will still do their draft shows remotely.

There is a chance this malaria drug works. I know it's  very early but keeping fingers crossed.

Lebron James came out saying that he is not comfortable returning until mitigating protocols are in place.  How many athletes are going to follow suit?

I don't  know if you have been following live TV lately but it is all one person in a studio. There is no way that would work. What are they going to do,  put the team Jersey  in a box and slide it across the stage to the player?

Yes but that wouldnt stop it from spreading. They have to stop it from spreading and thats only possible with a vaccine.  And whatever concoction they come up with will have side effects.  Still, any progress raises hope.

NFL Draft will not be delayed by coronavirus pandemic

https://www.newsday.com/sports/football/nfl-draft-2020-date-1.43463996

“The draft itself will be conducted and televised in a way that reflects current conditions,” Goodell wrote. “Our staff is certainly mindful of the operational issues this presents, and our top priority is putting in place procedures that allow all clubs to operate on a level playing field so that the draft is conducted in a way that is competitively fair to all clubs. All clubs should now be doing the necessary planning to conduct draft operations in a location outside of your facility, with a limited number of people present, and with sufficient technology resources to allow you to communicate internally, with other clubs, and with draft headquarters. Needless to say, we will be prepared to adjust to changed circumstances in the next several weeks, including the prospect of clubs being able to resume even limited operations within their facilities.”

Cant blame him. BB is all sweaty and touchy feely.  What are they going to do, test every player before every game. Not happening. Even if they did false negatives are still possible.

As with anything else, there are politics to deal with even in a pandemic.

You see Trump flipflop because when he promises New York all sort of goodies and ventilators, people in other parts of the country complain and remind him that NY failed to buy the ventilators they were told they needed 5 years ago.

Right now certain teams in the NFL are at a competitive advantage, because if they are based in certain states, they were told to shut their offices, but some teams can still come in.  This now evens the playing field.

Certain regions of the country are currently more affected by the virus, because their population is more dense, and their people travel more.   For others, they wonder why they are being inconvenienced.  Unfortunately, given the way our world works, I believe the current expectation is that every inch of the US will be exposed to the virus, but some inches may take awhile.    So the irony is that, as some states tell Trump they want to reopen fully by Easter, it is around Easter when everyone will be affected by this, and hopefully the NY numbers start to come down.

So now, regardless of where a team is HQ'd, they need to close their offices.

I never said there will be players there. I said you will just see Goodell speaking from a podium on a very limited set.

Limited team personnel will operate from their own locations, phoning picks in (like they already do anyways).

ESPN personalities will all be on green screens talking draft from their homes (like they do on half the shows already anyways)

Players will all stay at home and may even have cameras in their homes for limited number of first rounders. (Like half of them do anyways)

The NFL will still keep this as an event for fans to watch, Goodell even directly said so in his memo to the teams yesterday, that they thought the fans needed to see this.

I posted a similar article in the Coronavirus Thread.  Here's what one sporting match--or a situation like the draft in a large sporting venue--can create.  Very eye opening.

(ROME) — It was the biggest soccer game in Atalanta’s history and a third of Bergamo’s population made the short trip to Milan’s famed San Siro Stadium.

Nearly 2,500 fans of visiting Spanish club Valencia also traveled to that Champions League match.

More than a month later, experts are pointing to the Feb. 19 game as one of the biggest reasons why Bergamo has become one of the epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic — a “biological bomb” was the way one respiratory specialist put it — and why 35% of Valencia’s team became infected.

The match, which local media have dubbed “Game Zero,” was held two days before the first case of locally transmitted COVID-19 was confirmed in Italy.

“We were mid-February so we didn’t have the circumstances of what was happening,” Bergamo Mayor Giorgio Gori said this week during a live Facebook chat with the Foreign Press Association in Rome. “If it’s true what they’re saying that the virus was already circulating in Europe in January, then it’s very probable that 40,000 Bergamaschi in the stands of San Siro, all together, exchanged the virus between them. As is possible that so many Bergamaschi that night got together in houses, bars to watch the match and did the same...

As of Tuesday, nearly 7,000 people in the province of Bergamo had tested positive for COVID-19 and more than 1,000 people had died from the virus — making Bergamo the most deadly province in all of Italy for the pandemic. The Valencia region had more than 2,600 people infected.

The draft is an event that can be just as good in this environment. Do we really need to see the players or even hear from these idiots after they are drafted?

And it will feel even more amazing considering it will be the closest thing to a sporting event as we've seen in weeks.

I couldn't be more pumped.

wow so we are going to cram 80,000 into NFL stadiums even if numbers drop? And baseball is played practically every day with crowds of 30k-50k.  Yea right.  Not in 100 years. Well not this year anyways.
