Not trying to be a smart aleck here, but how does Bryce Petty or Ray Lucas not being good QBs have the slightest thing to do with whether Darnold is good or not? Are you saying we should be thankful he’s better than Hackenberg or some other dolt we’ve had? After all the draft capital we gave up to get him, it would be nice if he could at least out perform Gardiner Minshew, don’t you think?

When you give up that type of capital you're basically saying that his level of play can compensate for holes on the team. We've seen moments from Darnold, but overall you bring up a legitimate point. We gave up alot to get Darnold and though he hasn't been horrible to the point where I or anyone could say that he's a bust, however, no one can say that he's raising the level of play on offense. You tend to expect that when you trade up into the top 3 like that.

If some fans want to believe in Darnold and what he can become, I don't get the need to shout them down. There will always be those that go over board but most just want to get excited about a quarterback that is may be the most talented we have had since Namath. He is just going into his third year and has not had the most stable situation in the world, between his poor OL play, injuries or illness, lack of elite weapons, he has still shown plenty of flashes of what he is capable of. Lets hope he can begin to put it all together with an improve line, more talented offensive players and another season of experience under his belt. 1

Admittedly, Brissett, and Winston are questionable, but the point still stands: Darnold isn't even close to being close to a top QB yet. playtowinthegame
If every quarterback currently on an NFL roster right now were all free agents, I'd argue Sam Darnold would be one of the first 10 quarterbacks signed by an NFL team to be their starter. That's on potential alone. Sam's a couple months away from turning 23 years old and he's shown flashes of being great and without that much support around him. Example: It's not like Darnold has Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry to throw to, or Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb to hand the ball off to. Let's see what Darnold does with an offensive line that can give him time to make his reads, and surround him with some weaponz who can turn a short passing route into a big gain with some YAC. With the proper support around Darnold I believe some of the most brazen Darnold Doubters will be forced to begrudgingly give him his due while sucking his wake.

Some people use the term franchise QB as a term to mean elite. I don't. A franchise QB to me is the unquestioned starting QB for a given franchise, especially for an extended period of time. Or another way i look at it is would a team be looking to upgrade from them. Even by your standards, you don't think a QB can be a franchise QB for a short period? I can think of multiple examples of QBs that were incredibly good players for 3-4 years and then for whatever reason we're average or worse after that. Jeff Garcia is the example I always think of here. He had 3 outstanding years in a row to start the 2000s. 3 straight Pro Bowls, great stats, winning teams. Was he not a franchise QB? Franchise QB = 1 franchise. You can't be a "franchise QB" for multiple teams. Otherwise that moniker wouldn't make any sense. Thus, if Sam plays well enough where we want him here long-term and not just to play out his rookie deal, THEN he should be considered the franchise QB. If Sam Darnold doesn't get a 2nd contract here and has a very good career for someone else, he's not a franchise QB for the Jets. Your example, Jeff Garcia, played for 5 different teams over his career. That's a journeyman. Not a "franchise guy". Even if he played at a fairly high level, he doesn't get to be called a "franchise QB" when he played for that many teams.
