Who could then look back and say, wow, it's amazing the odds of us living here. Sure, but is it possible to imagine a planet sustaining life if other planetary bodies are crashing into it all the time? Life exists on such a thin razor's edge, and the Universe and everything in it seems to always be moving towards chaos rather than order. But, what is your definition of "all of the time?" A rock wiped out the dinosaurs which were around for 180M years. Our species is a blip. Thousands of generations could exist in a space between impacts.

Well, our atmosphere protects us very nicely from a lot of those meteors/asteroids/etc. And it's really, really hard to develop an atmosphere as perfect as ours. Sure, species keep getting wiped out all of the time. But to end up with a species with cognitive abilities, the ability to think about our own thoughts? That's just incredible, and something we seem to take for granted. I would not be surprised at all to find other planetary bodies with traces of water and/or microorganisms. But for there to be a lot of other planets out there teeming with life like ours....that requires a lot of mathematical difficulties to overcome that we can't easily dismiss. In the scheme of the Universe, could there not be 100? 500? 10K? That would both be nothing, and quite a few at the same time.
