The Young Safety reminds me of Jason Sehorn of the Giants.

I have been following this draft really closely and NEVER heard of this kid. I feel really dumb. Just never studied the safeties

Said it early. Not a bad idea to draft crazy fast athletic dudes. Plus I guess he returns kicks.

I’m normally not this optimistic. Wasn’t expecting it but it’s a good pick imo.

Manish Mehta

Jets add speed, athleticism & range on defense by drafting Cal safety Ashtyn Davis in third round.

Trade Maye? One of the best players on the team for a former walk on? No thanks

Davis will need to prove he’s even as good as John McGraw.

All I want is Bradlee Anae and Lynn Bowden

Lynn Bowden? Gross.

Dude is a slot receiver at best and a gadget wildcat QB. Stay far away from him.

Apparently this dude can play every position in the secondary? Nowadays this is becoming a trend to have a multi-faceted player. Think Jamal Adams, and Isaiah Simmons. or laviska shenault on offense. Had no idea who the dude was a definitely wasn't on my radar but I'm not going to question the GM cuz he seems to be doing a good job. I still want Curtis Weaver or Donovan people's Jones. Give me Antonio Gandy golden! Or Zack Moss! Joe Douglas is kicking ass and he's covering all three phases

UMMMMM YES if it's ******* SAFETY in a draft where we needed to hit home runs at PIVOTAL positions where we currently have NO DEPTH, then YES, it is a bad thing.  Sorry.  Not debatable.

If he's a FS/CB type, he absolutely fits a need.

Do you think GW pushed for this kid?

Overview
Late-comer to the game who has rare physical gifts that can't be taught but can be capitalized on. His instincts are just average right now, but he appears to have decent recognition skills. He just needs to trust what he sees. Learning to play under control in coverage and as a tackler will be the difference between being considered a good football player instead of an explosive athlete. The elite traits should get him drafted inside the first two days, but there are some boom/bust elements to his game right now. He should become a future starter at safety, but his size, length and speed could create interest in him as a potential cornerback conversion.
Strengths
  • Monster athletic tester and scouts rave about A-plus character
  • Has electric chase and recovery speed
  • Experienced lining up in a variety of spots
  • Smooth in his backpedal paired with exceptional closing burst
  • Athletic gifts make up for slower eyes
  • Range to play over the top from single-high
  • Disruptive length at catch point
  • Alert and energetic in zone coverage
  • Possesses traits of a future ballhawk if recognition develops
  • Does not lack toughness
  • Trigger and demeanor to race into the alley in run support
Weaknesses
  • Can be reckless as downhill tackler
  • Has issues coming to balance and getting controlled, wrap-up tackles
  • Needs to shorten stride length in leveraged pursuit to prevent overflows
  • Instincts inconsistent due to inexperience
  • Has some hip tightness
  • Leggy in short-area movement, limiting balance in space
  • Room for tighter route squeeze to deter throws
  • Peripheral route awareness can be spotty from deep zone
  • Needs to play with better contain discipline against zone-read quarterbacks

Davis - highly versatile, can play multiple positions, loves football, great athlete, great character.

Checks all of Joe D’s boxes on who he wants to build a football team with.  We shouldn’t be surprised.

If the Pats had picked him we would all be crying about how the Pats get all these guys and we get Jags.

Smart kid to frame himself as a corner. Considering we really only added Desir there, I am cool with it.

I may be drinking the kool aid but he looks like a pretty good player.

One thing I love - Douglas is drafting serious athletes.

These guys are all big and fast. The Jets always seem over-matched physically by the elite teams. That could be coming to an end with Douglas.

There is no depth at safety.  That's not debatable either

Hennessy and Josh Jones would have been perfect, but we had to Go safety

they're both still on the board for our next pick.... whats the issue?

Everyone who is familiar with the player are gushing about him. Be happy.

Nice take, JD building depth with eventual starter potential.   JD building a NFL roster, who'd a thunk it.

raw good athlete with a tremendous work ethic with some good instincts, I don't much about him, but i will keep an open mind. We have holes all over, and he is a versatile DB - can't have enough of those.

It might even be that Coach Williams wanted a better coverage DB/safety to put into the game along with Jamal so that he can use Adams in more blitz packages/closer to the LOS, where he is at his best. While an edge rusher would be nice, having a safety blitz might be easier to disguise. I am willing to wait and see how this kid fits in and what the plan is before I bury JD.  And we may still get the other players folks here are adamant about.

I love Marcus Maye

Hating this pick right now, not the player but another premium pick for a fukcing safety

Why do people continue to think in single dimension?

It's evident that Douglas and Williams like VERSATILITY.  They don't look at a guy and say 'he's a safety'.

This kid is fast.  can play multiiple positions and roles in the D backfield.  I'm sure he'll play ST and he can return kicks.

When we were down DBs last year, Williams adapted scheme and used 'plug and play' and made it work.  How is it bad to give him a guy that can play multiple roles.

Maybe to the fair-weather fans who only want Randy Moss. But guys like Mike DeVito or Henry Anderson, Brad Smith and Bilal Powell actually make football teams. Everybody can't be a f****** Superstar! Somebody has to do the Blue Collar Dirty Work right?
