How many starters do you think JD drafted?

3/4 locks - Becton, Mims, Mann, and I think Davis will take Maye’s job.

The other picks are mostly depth picks and people who might start down the line. JD has done an incredible job this offseason revamping this roster. We’re only a couple of pieces away - go get a proven WR and one of a CB/OLB (Logan Ryan, Griffen, Clowney?) and this team is pushing for the division in 2020

With all the personnel packages that teams run I don't think in terms
of starters I think in terms of "contributors".  And to me the players
that should get significant reps are:

Becton - should be "starting" LT
Mims - should be in multiple WR sets
Davis - should be in multiple DB sets and every special team unit
Zuniga - should be in pressure packages
Perine - could be the #2 RB
Mann - should be the "starting" punter and KO specialist
Wilson - could be the #2 CB (since we traded a 6th rounder for him he's
included)

But Gase better learn from the Kalil fiasco no one should be given
a job, they have to earn it

Any idea what side of the defense Zuniga played from? Weak side or strong side? Did he ever play standing up or always hand in the dirt? @JiF may be able to answer that one? Just wonder how he a Jenkins will work together

In a perfect world, Clarke is not starting at Tackle.  That means either Becton or Fant got beat out which is not why we drafted one at 11 and signed the other for a pretty good amount.  I do think there is an opportunity for him to slide over to Guard, however and be a starter at some point. Van Roten should be a lock at one side, but the other is a battle between Winters and Lewis and I think that's where there is an opportunity to improve.  If Clarke turns out to be better than both of them, I'd be thrilled.  Then we could look to move Winters and still have adequate depth there.

Personally, I think George Fant stinks. If Clarke is a legit player, I think he can definitely beat him out. But that's just me.

I definitely think its more likely his future is at Guard with the Jets though because Fant will be given every opportunity to succeed and keep the job.

are we talking day 1 starters?  day 1 i say 3 (becton, mims, mann) but eventual starters? i say 5-6 (becton, mims, mann, davis, clark and possibly hall)

Great point. Not too many teams will have more than a few starters on day one from any draft. Eventual starters/major contributors is the key. I think the 5th round CB, Hall, could very realistically be starting at some point assuming his ankle is 100%.

Yeah i put hall as a maybe because 1) i need to see how actually healthy he is, doctors say he'll be fine to go, but I want to see it to believe it.   and 2) youre only starting 2-3 corners.  We know poole has the nickle locked down so hall has to beat out a decent list of incumbent players and new signee's.  Now its not like he's got to leap a murderers row of CB's to win a starting job, its just more players that have a chance to start at that position than most others on the team, so while i think he has the talent to start theres alot of factors in the way of him actually doing so.

The other guys have very little in their way to gain starting spots starting spots.  Mims becton and mann are locked in pretty much since there is virtually nothing in their way.  Clark has to develop, but once he does he has all the tools and physical ability to be a starter, so its just a matter of time for him i believe if he develops the right way.  and Davis i think will play an absolute ton this year,  especially in big nickle and dime sets.  They'll put Jamal in the box, let maye play the SS spot, and put davis at FS.  That pick is so under rated with the flexibility that it provides GW with his personnel packages.  He'll most likely be starting in year 2 at FS when we let maye go.  Maye is not a super natural fit at FS, he can play there, but he's always been a more rangy SS than a true centerfield FS, which is exactly how Davis profiles.

Just starters, not role players. Now, I'm calling punter a starters job for the sake of this discussion, but I obviously wouldn't put as much weight on Punter as I would QB.

With that said, I think JD got us 3 opening day starters. Becton, Mims, and Mann. I also believe those 3 are legitimate starters. Example, in 2016 Darron Lee was made a day one starter. Not because he earned the opportunity to start. The fact is he sucked as a player. He just got day one starter because he was the most talented on a very untalented roster. The difference here is Becton, Mims, and Mann will all emerge from an objective competition in training camp.

Mac didn't give a sh*t about conducting objective competition and Toilet made players starters based solely on draft position.

I'll go for 4, the 3 listed of Becton, Mims, Mann, and either Hall at CB if healthy or Zuniga at OLB because those are positions where there are openings with no solid established starter.

Becton, Mims, and Mann will start.

Davis will probably get some run in big nickel and dime sets, his playing time steadily increasing as he gains more experience/trust from Gregg Williams. I’m not a fan of Gregg’s affinity for the “angel” safety but Davis’ skill set is much better suited for that position than either Adams or Maye.

Zuniga will get a chance to win the OLB job opposite Jenkins, but I’d expect him to mostly play in that spot as a DPR unless he shows some coverage abilities in camp. Don’t think he ever stood up at UF. In 4-3 looks he’ll slide in nicely at DE.

Perrine should get some run spelling Bell, who is most likely gone next year. He’ll get a chance to compete for the lead role in 2021 depending on what he shows this year. Probably a lifelong RB2 though I’d think unless he plays behind a really good run blocking line (which hopefully we’re building).

Clark I’m really high on. I think there’s a chance he could beat out Lewis and start at G at some point this season, and at the least should be an intriguing depth piece.

Hall depends on his health. I expect Williams will shuffle around the corners a bunch this season like he did last year. If Hall is healthy I imagine he’ll see a lot of snaps for a 5th round pick, mostly out of necessity but he has the skills to make the most of it.

Overall, 3 starters (with the caveat that one of those is a punter so, meh) and potentially 3-4 big time contributors (Davis, Zuniga, Clark, Hall). JD infused some high upside depth in the roster this offseason, which we’ve been lacking for ages. This really could be a great foundation builder.

Starters Year 1: Becton, Mims, Mann

Starters within 3 years: Davis, Hall

Rotational Players:  Zuniga, Perine

Backup: Morgan, Clark

I think these are best case scenarios. Somebody is going to bust. If we get 3 starters and 2 rotational players, I’d call it an excellent drsft.

3. Ashtyn Davis (Next year)- package player this year- FS

4. Bryce Hall- CB 2

5. Cameron Clarke- G or T

I guess Braden Mann counts as well.

Clarke was an all-american in HS playing center, As per Joe Douglas.

There’s some excellent competition at CB and along the OL . The guy coaching the defense I trust to put the best players on the field . I know that based on what happened with the 3rd round pick from last year . The key will be can Adam Gase match his intensity on the offensive side .
If this season happens, it’s going to be a fun ride . The Jets appear to finally have football people at GM, HC and DC

I think you guys are overrated Davis. The kid is an older prospect who doesn’t have a ton of experience.

His ceiling to me is an ace special teamed/backup DB.

If that's true and we passed on OLB Zack Baun for a backup DB and Special Teamer I'll be very, very disappointed.

You don't think Becton can beat out Chuma Edoga to start at one of the OT spots?

I think he can, I don’t think he will.

He needs to learn how to pass block.  He was very far from an elite pass blocker in college. That’s not the kind of guy we really want starting out protecting Sam’s blind side.  I’m sure he would be a mauler in the run game - but if he couldn’t dominate the better rushers in college, what are NFL guys going to do to him.  He’s just not ready.

He might have to sit for a few months or a year before you can trust him to not get our QB killed.  He has all the potential in the world, but it really is just that.

I did NOT like this pick at all.

LOL.

He’s still going to be better than Fant and Edoga. They’re trash.

He dominated within the system he was being asked to play. He will get a lot more coaching in passing sets now that they’ll actually be a feature of the offence.

Even if he were just a dominant run blocker he will be on the line somewhere. I’d bet anything he starts if healthy.

pretty much right but i'm not sure mims will be the starter on day one.  and other players, like zuniga and the db's will rotate into games although not start.  i think douglas did a pretty good job.  i guess people can be upset about his taking only one receiver but at the same time the db's were bolstered and oline depth.  these were important to fill.

I loved Mims, but I definitely would've tried to take another WR, even if it was a Jauan Jennings or K.J. Hill with that last pick rather than trade it for the CB. I hope he's starting opening day, but I agree it's no lock. He will see the field a lot, though. By not taking another WR, the Jets have really pinned a lot of hope on this kid.

maybe.  i think people tend to discount what griffen, herndon, bell, bring to the table as receivers.  i can see 100-125 pass receptions from this group.  add another 65-75 from crowder and that leaves about 100 or so between mims, smith, perriman, berrios, etc plus whoever shakes free during the training camps.  and the main thing this draft was to bolster the oline and db's, which douglas did.

I'd like to see the offense open up a lot more. Your describing 2/3 of the Jets completions going for an average of less than 10 yards per catch here. Probably not a bad guess, unfortunately, but I'd like more. A lot more involvement from Perriman, Mims, and Smith downfield - provided that Sam has his 2.5 seconds this year.

And what I was getting at was that as much as I loved Mims, I wouldn't've put all my WR eggs into that one basket in such a deep WR draft. Probably taking a Bryan Edwards or Devin Duvernay over Zuniga, but that's me.

Quincy Wilson is not starting unless something has gone badly wrong.

Austin showed more last year in his limited time than Wilson ever has. And that was coming in mid season with no preparation or preseason.  see how he isn’t a starter opening day unless there’s an injury.

Wilson should be far down the depth chart. He’ll be competing with Hall for the #4 spot IMO. And I’d back Hall.

Assuming he's fully healthy, don't underestimate Hall. He's a real talent.

It's not like he can't pass block, it's just that he wasn't asked to do a lot of it in school. He has all the tools to be a dominant pass-protector.

But this is why I'd start him on the right side. Let him learn on the job while opening up huge holes in the running game. He's a sure-fire, opening day starter at OT, though. To me, that's just a given.

agree w/ the bolded part being something not desireable

as for downfield, i agree...maybe with the 6'4"  campbell if he can displace smyth...   (he does specials too)

we had the fewest yards last year...    we cant possibly live off of dinks and dunks and 14 play drives all the time.

is THAT why we spent all those picks on a QB?

only 70-something reps in an entire season...      thats what i think i read....     is that right 70-something?

# of rookie starters is often says more about the quality of the veterans on the roster than the quality of the rookie class.

Our 2013 draft class, Idzik's first, produced 5 guys (out of 7 drafted) who started 8 or more games as rookies:

  • Dee Milliner
  • Sheldon Richardson
  • Geno Smith
  • Brian Winters
  • Tommy Bohanon

Nobody is calling that a good draft class.

reminding me how long winters has been gettimg our qb mauled made me gag...    that fugging guy....     i mean, god bless, you made your family safe for a couple generations off the johnsons $$$ now just get off my team....  gahhhh!!!!!

Saying "starter" is some what  limiting, particularly on D.  Lot of players in and out.

Change the question to, How many players will contribute, and improve their position?

Becton...Starter at RT, takes nearly all the snaps.  Will be a major improvement to position

Mims..Eventual starter this season. Think they will sign a vet who will be on paper starter.  Lots of reps from day one.  Major improvement

Davis..Won't be a starting S, but in Williams D will get a ton of reps as 3rd S, or CB.  valuable player. A major role will be created for him.

Zuniga..Don't think he'll be an every down player, but he is going to be given a chance to get the QB in passing situations.  Improves position.  There really isn't anyone else who rushes the passer right now.

Perine..Role of a back up, who contributes as an effective RB, and receiver.

Morgan..Hope we never see him, but I'm good with a QB here after what happened last year.  Improves position

Clark..Won't be opening day, but I think he could be an eventual starter at G.  Improves the position even as a swing T/G back up

Hall..Interesting player.  Not sure he's going to be 100% on opening day, but at some point in the season could be the #1 CB.  Could be a major steal here.

Mann..Starter.

Wilson..Just don't know.  Was worth a flyer for a 6th

IMO there are 2 players in UDFA who have an excellent chance to make the roster, and improve their position.  Cager and Huff

IMO this was an excellent draft.  Almost every player brings value to the team.
