With ongoing stay-at-home orders being extended throughout dozens of states around the country, the NFL continues to work around the possibility that there may be serious delays to the start of its season.

On Monday, new reports from the Sports Business Journal detailed what a delayed season could look like, as well as the specific changes being mulled over in league offices. Some of the highlights include:

  • Moving the Super Bowl to Feb. 28, 2021. The report states that "specific conversations have occurred with Tampa hosts about delaying the Super Bowl by one week to Feb. 14, but a source said the last two weeks of February are in play as well."
  • No Pro Bowl. At least one contingency plan focuses on "cutting the weekend between the conference championships and the Super Bowl, where the Pro Bowl is typically played, to allow another week to be lost to delays. Under such a plan, the Pro Bowl would not be played."
  • No bye weeks. Instead, "two weeks of early-season games could be shifted wholesale to the end of the season. A third week would feature teams only playing opponents with the same bye week, so that week could be cut and byes eliminated leaguewide."

Interestingly enough, the article goes on to say that the league still plans on releasing the 2020 schedule on May 7, despite the growing uncertainty of how realistic it would be.

Not surprised, the NFL is a multi-billion dollar operation and they need to have backup plans. We need to see other sports to come back and lay out a plan of action. Things will not be normal until there is a vaccine.

It's going to be nearly impossible for the NBA to comeback this year due to all the social distancing protocols and it won't be long before the NFL follows suit.  The real issue to me is the integrity of the game will be compromised by altering the game. This will greatly impact record books and stats across the board.

The real question as fans is that if we rather see a full season with no contingencies or a half ass season that will compromise the core and integrity of the sport.

Losing the bye week would hurt the players.  They need to recover.

Overrated, one week isn't saving them. Particularly the guys with early bye weeks (they start week 4), how do they survive most of the season without break as they play 13 games straight. With today's soft practice schedule and medical treatments I doubt it's as important as when guys used to have already gone through a month of two a days and were playing with less contact rules. They get what, one padded practice during game weeks if that.

cut ex games to two from 4 right now and leave in the bye, no one would miss the pro bowl, no one

We all know is a pick-up game.  I went to the probowl before and had a chance to see Curtis Martin play his last one.  Pick-up game at best.  They should honor or award players with a probowl endorsement without actually playing it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the schedule has all non-conference (AFC v. NFC) games played in the 1st four weeks.

If they need to delay the season, the easiest thing to do would be to just cut those  4 games as they have little impact on divisional and conference tie breakers.

The one thing the NFL can't have is some teams playing 6 divisional games, while another plays 4.
